Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery, Cyprus
Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery.
Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery is located within 20 km. north-east of Limassol, not far from the way to Larnaca.
The monastery was founded in XII century. Tourists can buy icons, painted by monks.
The monastery of Agios Georgios Alamanos standing majestically, like an ancient castle, is found south west of Pentakomo. Two recently built Byzantine rhythm chapels, those of Agioi Pantes and Agios Nektarios, the main church in the middle of the complex and the nuns' cells on the ground as well as the first floor of the tall buildings which surround the church, are what catch the eye of the visitor. In this commune, and under the supervision and succour of the Mother Superior, each nun has her own particular duties. The history of the monastery of Agios Georgios Alamanos is lost in the depths of time. According to Machairas, one of the 300 Alaman saints who reached Cyprus, came to this remote and tranquil spot to exercise his monastic life. It is not certain whether a monastery was founded here during the Frankish period, later to be disestablished during the Ottoman occupation of Cyprus. What is certain is that in 1880 Paisius re-established this location as a worshipping site. Paisius constructed the first monastic cells and repaired the decrepit church, which, together, formed the nucleus of the contemporary monastery. Monastic life, however, did not continue uninterrupted since, for a number of reasons, Paisius was compelled to abandon the monastery. In 1949, the then Bishop of Kitium and later Makarios III, Archbishop of Cyprus, reorganised the monastery and, with his support, led to the settling there of about 13 nuns from the monastery of Agios Antonios, near Deryneia. Thanks to the diligence, zeal and faith of these first nuns, the monastery was transformed in no time. The number of cells was increased, the number of visitors multiplied, and contributions led to the establishment of many modern amenities.

Looted Icon of St George Returns to Cyprus
Looted Icon of St George Returns to Cyprus
An 1829 Greek Orthodox icon of St. George, looted from the village of Karavas, in Cyprus following the 1974 Turkish invasion, is set to be repatriated, after it was confiscated by the Swiss authorities. The icon was confiscated only hours before going to auction in Koller, an auction house in Zurich. The legal process was completed in less than a year, following close cooperation between the Church of Cyprus, Cypriot and Swiss authorities. The icon is now in Cypriot hands in Switzerland and will...

Kannoures Nature Trail - Kakopetria - Troodos - Nicosia - Limassol - Cyprus Part I.
Pretty much awesome trail very well marked at every point. Difficulties comes from some river cross and pass small gorges made by rain water to reach river. Long and tough to go always uphill. Most people go down hill only , that is much easier.
My route is different at several points than just walk thru on nature trail.
I did visit Chromium mine , you can expect difficulties to reach the mine, due huge rock falling and from leave the mine , due river did ruin the path there.
I did it uphill and back much more tough than just go down.
I did use my 4x4 car on forestry road and mark to you where you can park safely.
I did visit the neighbor valley at an easy viewpoint when you can get out from river valley, go for it ! scenery is breathtaking.
Study weather forecast before go, on rainy winter days it can be dangerous !

Right from the Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis the walker can follow the paved road Pedoula – Kakopetrias for about 3 km to end up to the Kakopetria Village.
Virgin forest landscape. The trail begins next to the source of the Karkotis River and through a virgin forest landscape that crosses the beautiful river valley. It passes near the old, closed, chromium mine and ends in Kakopetria. The route can pass through the church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis (12th century), which has excellent frescoes and is included as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
