From Wikipedia
The Sacred Heart Cathedral (Serbo-Croatian: Katedrala Srca Isusova; Катедрала Срца Исусова) is a Catholic church in Sarajevo; commonly referred as the Sarajevo Cathedral (Sarajevska katedrala / Сарајевска катедрала), it is the largest cathedral in Bosnia and Herzegovina.[2] It is the seat of the Archbishop of Vrhbosna, currently Cardinal Vinko Puljić, and center of Catholic worship in the city. The Cathedral is located in the city's Old Town district.
Sacred Heart Cathedral was built in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an important Catholic concept. The building is in the Neo-Gothic style, with Romanesque Revival elements. The building was awarded to the Viennese contractor Baron Karl Schwarz with supervising architect Josip Vancaš. He modeled it after the Notre-Dame in Dijon (France). Work began on 25 August 1884, and was completed on 9 November 1887. The Bishop of Dubrovnik was present for the consecration on 14 September 1889.
Peace demonstration in front of the cathedral on September 1991 prior to the outbreak of the Bosnian War.
The building was damaged during the Siege of Sarajevo, but not completely destroyed, and the damage has since been repaired. The building is often considered as a symbol of the city: The design above the door to the Cathedral is part of the flag and seal of Sarajevo Canton and the Romanesque towers are featured on the flag and coat of arms of Sarajevo.
Exterior[edit]

It rests on four small columns of red Tyrolean marble. The seven niches behind the altar depict in the central position: Sacred Heart of Jesus; on the left side: St. Joseph and St. Francis of Assisi; on the right side: St. Michael and the prophet Elijah; on the extremities: statue of an angel.

Pulpit: the pulpit is mounted on a richly decorated pedestal. The enclosure shows in the central part Jesus as teacher, flanked on each side by two Evangelists.
Frescoes: in 1886 the frescoes were commissioned to Alexander Maximilian Seitz (1811–1888). Due to his deteriorating health he could only finish the designs in 1887. The execution was undertaken by his assistant Alberto Rohden.

The explosion at the church in downtown Sarajevo rang out just after midnight G-M-T.
Police believe St Joseph's Catholic Church in the city's Marijin Dvor neighbourhood was the subject of a grenade attack.

The United Nations confirmed the details of the attack.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Well in the early hours of Tuesday morning, shortly after midnight, we had an explosion, we are not sure what type of explosion but the device was planted close to the rear door of the Catholic church. Damage was done to the door, to several windows and also to several adjacent cars.
SUPER-CAPTION: Liam McDowall, United Nations.
The U-N says it's concerned by the timing of the attack - just over a month from the Pope's scheduled visit.
SOUNDBITE:
I think that this is a matter of some concern because it comes just before the Pope is due to visit Bosnia. At the moment we do not have evidence to suggest that this is directly an attack against the Catholic church. We together with the federal police are investigating the incident in some detail.

Police are boosting their presence around Catholic institutions on orders from Bosnia's Muslim president, Alija Izetbegovic.
This follows a recent anonymous telephone threat that the pontiff will be assassinated if he dares to come to Sarajevo as planned on April 12-13.
Despite the possible security risks - the Vatican says the Pope will go ahead with his visit.

Muslim call to prayer in Mostar
During our week-long stay in Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, it would have been impossible to not notice the co-existing religions.Throughout the day, the church bells kept the time and five times a day we could hear the Muslim call to prayer from the several minarets, which all created a unique soundtrack. I shot this video from the top of the Koski Mehmet-Pasha Mosque minaret during the afternoon call to prayer.

zahigo25@walla.com +972-54-6905522 tel סיור עם מורה הדרך ומדריך הטיולים צחי שקד 0546905522
My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

A story of the young Mary in paintings, Zavala Monastery, Zavala, Bosna i Hercegovina
Thanks to monk Marko for telling me the story of Mary. This is actually the first time I've seen Mary as a baby and as a young woman. These three panels appear over two walls and, according to the info. tablet outside of the monastery, They [and the other frescoes] were painted by Georgije Mitrofanović, a monk from Hilandar, who was the most gifted and highly educated Serbian artist of the 17th century.

BOSNIA: SARAJEVO: VINKO PULJIC
Bosnian/Nat
A clergyman who has come to symbolise the courage of Sarajevo was created a cardinal in a Vatican ceremony on Saturday.
Forty-nine-year-old Vinko Puljic, the Archbishop of Sarajevo, was among 30 senior clergymen to be elevated.
Puljic's inclusion in the elite conclave which will choose the next pope is viewed as recognition of his work for peace in Sarajevo.
The pope reached out to war-battered Sarajevo by naming the Bosnian capital's archbishop, Vinko Puljic, as cardinal.
Delivering mass at the Holy Joseph Church in Sarajevo earlier this month, Puljic said he felt the pope had elevated him to cardinal in a show of support for the difficult situation of Christians in Sarajevo and the rest of Bosnia.
SOUNDBITE:
It was probably to support the protests made in Bosnia to be a state with equal rights for everyone and for Sarajevo to be the base for a cardinal and to perpetuate the existence of the Catholic Church in this area like the last few centuries, that it may survive the war here. Probably he wanted to give me his support in these efforts for peace.
The consequences of the war are huge. But despite of these war events I think that all Croats and Muslims and Serbs must live here and live together.
We are not being blamed for being born here and loving this country.
I can't speak about the time terms when this war can happen justice and peace because media is playing a crucial role in it and if the justice, if the peace, if tolerance would come into Bosnia again then we should ask Western countries and the world why these didn't happen.
SUPER CAPTION: Vinko Puljic, archbishop of Sarajevo
The pope called off a trip to Sarajevo in September because of security concerns, but he has continued to issue sharp denunciations of the Bosnian civil war.
