Clap Your Hands Nicholas White
Clap Your Hands, All Ye Peoples, by composer Nicholas White, is a festive Psalm setting for choir and organ. The words of Psalm 47:1-6 come to life with the rhythmic drive of this musical setting.
Sheet music is available at Biretta Books:
This anthem for choir and organ is also available in a version that includes brass and timpani.
This is a live and unedited recording of the St. John Cantius Choir of St. Cecilia singing Clap Your Hands, All Ye Peoples, by composer Nicholas White at a church service on May 13, 2018.
Nicholas White is a Grammy nominated composer and conductor, as well as a versatile organist, pianist and singer with experience in many different styles of music. In 2011, Nicholas was appointed to the post of Director of Chapel Music & Organist at St. Paul’s School, Concord, New Hampshire. In 2012 he became Chair of the Arts at the school. In 2013 he was appointed Music Director of The Boston Cecilia, one of America’s oldest and finest performing arts organizations.
Nicholas was born in London, England, and received his early musical training as a treble chorister. He held his first organist and choirmaster position at the age of fifteen, going on to become Organ Scholar of Clare College, Cambridge. Since moving to the United States in 1989, Nicholas has held various positions in churches, colleges and schools. These include Washington National Cathedral, Washington, DC and St. Michael’s Church, New York City.
In 2003 Nicholas founded Tiffany Consort, an ensemble of eight accomplished singers. The group’s first CD, “O Magnum Mysterium” was nominated for a Grammy, and the second CD, “In Sure and Certain Hope: Choral Music of Nicholas White”, was released in December 2006. Both recordings are available on the MSR Classics label.
Dumbarton Concerts in Washington, DC commissioned White’s setting of Poe’s “The Raven” which was performed to great critical acclaim by The Raven Consort in 2013. Additionally, Nicholas recently completed a dramatic song cycle, “On Dreams Alone”, which has been in preparation for the last two decades. Nicholas is in high demand as a composer, receiving numerous commissions from choirs across the country. Most recently these have included The Hanson Institute for American Music (Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY), Lyric Fest (Philadelphia, PA), Christchurch Cathedral (Cincinnati, OH), The Commonwealth Youthchoirs (Philadelphia, PA), The Chancel Choir (Lubbock, TX), The Association of Anglican Musicians (Hartford, CT), St. John’s Cathedral (Albuquerque, NM), St. Mary’s Episcopal Church (Newton, MA), Dumbarton Concerts (Washington, DC), Granite State Choral Society (Rochester, NH), and Shadyside Presbyterian Church (Pittsburgh, PA.)
REVIEW
“Unashamedly beautiful, Nicholas White’s choral music makes you think about the function of music and how a composer decides on the rightness of its design. White’s music never cloys. It is beautifully crafted, the manner of word-setting stemming very much from the English choral tradition… music that soothes more often than it challenges, while still stimulating the imagination as it nourishes the spirit.”

Róisín Dubh Wakes Up Rochester
Video from January 14, 2004, when Celtic Music Society was featured on WROC's Wake Up Rochester program. This was in the midst of a brutal cold snap... When we arrived at school at 4:00 am, the air temperature was 8 degrees below zero, and the wind chill was nearly -25°. By the time everyone else had woken up, it had warmed up enough that we had a full day of school.
Róisín Dubh (formerly Celtic Music Society) performs the traditional music of Ireland in authentic traditional and contemporary styles, and students are instructed through traditional methods. Since 2001, they have performed more than 250 times, released three albums, hosted seven workshops by All-Ireland Champion musicians, and shared the stage with some of the top Irish musicians from our region and the world. Director Mark Gowman and students in Róisín Dubh frequently present workshops to students, teachers, and college music education majors, and they have presented several at the Eastman School of Music and the New York State School Music Association's annual conference. Róisín Dubh was one of only four student ensembles from the United States invited to perform at the National Music Student Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City, where they also presented a workshop for more than 100 teachers at the corresponding Music Educators National Conference.

STORYLINE:
Protesters assembling on Saturday in Washington DC were raising their voices against the war in Iraq and demanding that US President George W. Bush bring home the 130-thousand American troops there.
Busses began to arrive carrying people from all across the nation, while organizers busily assembled signs and passed out leaflets in the shadow of the Washington Monument.
Organizers predicted more than 30-thousand people would turn out for the march and speeches later on Saturday. Thousands more were expected for similar demonstrations in San Francisco.
The protest drew a diverse crowd - young, old, veterans, relatives with loved ones in the armed forces and American Muslims.
Michael McPhearson, a veteran from the 1991 Persian Gulf War, issued a scathing critique of President Bush, who was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland.
Your administration has misled our nation, said McPhearson. You have butchered the truth, George Bush.
That message was echoed by many veterans and relatives of soldiers in the crowd.
Sponsoring the protests were International ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) and United for Peace and Justice.
To counter the anti-war demonstrations, the Washington chapter of Free Republic, an independent grass-roots conservative group, planned a rally on Saturday at the Capitol, where organizers expect about 1-thousand people.
Some small scuffles broke out around the fringes of the peace rally between pro-troops and anti-war demonstrators. They shouted slogans into bullhorns at each other and a few punches were thrown, but no serious injuries or arrests took place.
