Japanese Knife & Sword City: Seki Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Traveling for KNIVES and SWORDS! The Japanese knife is quite simply the best in the world. The place best known for them is Seki (関市) in Gifu where Japanese Samurai swords have been forged for over 700 years. That tradition continues today in its knives and cutlery. They're perfect.
Following World War 2, the city changed from forging the katana to producing some of the world's best knives and cutlery. So, I ended up at Seki Station recently -- to buy the best knife in Japan! Maybe even a samurai sword, too.
In this episode, John travels to Seki city in Gifu prefecture to check out the CUTLERY FESTIVAL known as the HAMONO MATSURI (刃物まつり) in Japan. Now only will you find over 43 knife makers selling their best at discounted prices, you'll see the most unique knives anywhere as well as Chanbara performances (Samurai Sword Fight Acting).
The most unique part of the Hamono Festuval is an authentic demonstration of traditional sword forging using Tamahagane Steel.
HOW MUCH IS A REAL SAMURAI SWORD?
They start at 400,000 to 600,000 Yen ($4,000 to $6000) and can go up to $20,000! We'll see swords being made in Seki.
HOW TO BUY A JAPANESE KNIFE:
There many things to consider such as the type of steel, the type of knife, it's balance and of course, it's price.
WHEN IS SEKI'S HAMONO CUTLERY FESTIVAL ( 刃物まつり ) ?
2019 October 12th and 13th (Saturday & Sunday)
URL: (English available)
* It takes place on the second weekend of October annually.
The knife I bought:
Mcusta ZANMAI Classic Pro Damascus Flame
Santoku 180mm ¥15,000 Festival Price
Hida Beef (Hida Gyu 飛騨牛) is one of Japan's top wagyu beef and worth trying in Gifu or the Nagoya area.
HOW TO GET TO SEKI:
Best is to rent a car. It's easiest to get around this way because trains don't leave often in the countryside and many places like Monet's Pond can be accessed only by infrequent buses.
By Train, it's a short and scenic ride from Nagoya Station or Gifu Station.

What is Damascus Steel?
Mr. Walter Sorrells made an excellent video on YouTube explaining it. I also learned more about knife making from his channel.

Junichiro Sekino (1914-1988) is a talented wood-block print artist and a leader of Sosaku Hanga (an important Japanese art movement), whose art has earned its way to many prestigious museums. This slideshow by far does not have all of the people Sekino printed, but hopefully it will give you, the audience, a taste of his art.
Short Biography:
Junichiro Sekino was born in the city of Aomori. He started studying printmaking at an early age. When he was 22, he even won a prize for an etching. At the age of 25, Sekino moved to Tokyo and studied under Koshiro Onchi. He used traditional Japanese and Western methods. During the Second World War he worked in an ammunition factory, because artist couldn't rely on there work for good profit anymore. After the war, Sekino's art gradually became famous and international museums started collecting his work. In 1963 he taught printmaking at the Oregon State University (USA), and after returning to Japan taught in the Kobe University. His first son, Junpei, is a fractal artist, while his second son, Yousaku, is a woodblock print artist too.

William Klein and Daido Moriyama Exhibiton Tate Modern, London
Daido Moriyama at Tate Modern for the press view of his exhibition.
The exhibition consists of 2 separate shows side by side. The first looks at William Klein the American photographer and the second Daido Morriyama the Japanese photographer.
Although they are very different in terms of their practice, Moriyama has acknowledge Klein's influence on his work with Photo-Books.
On viewing the exhibition of their work they seem to have something in common at first glance in terms of their urban street photography and the cities they work in (New York and Tokyo).
On a technical point, he is now using a Nikon compact camera rather than the Ricoh GRD for his colour work. Image here:

A Video of Shellhouse Living Portable
Carton is a symbol of consumerism and it is a material that highlights the abundance of materials in the world. It can contain food or objects of any type; it can be thrown away and recycled later on. But this time, it has been used as the main protagonist in the artwork of a young Chilean designer, Carolina Pino. Carolina is a brilliant NYU student, splitting her time between Santiago, Chile and New York. Her project is named Shellhouse Living Portable. The carboard house is equipped with a circuit that transmits radio signals and transforms a simple box into a traceable internet device. Through the internet connection, the shellhouse is visible online and traceable through the city on google maps.

Google Maps.

BRAVURA EVENTS MANAGEMENT L.L.C.
Nothing magically spells the quintessential ambience of a majestically themed exhibit in an array of iridescent colors or in just a plain and single, deliberated motif. In a cosmopolitan city like Dubai, where there is no shortage of artistes, artisans, dessinateurs, lithographes and painters hawking their talent as far as the ear can hear, having someone to create a whole new concept for, say, a mall, is as confusing as straightening out a tangled web of spun shades.
Bravura Events Management is here to offer unrivaled and larger-than-life intricate copies and novel propositions of anything related to art and architecture, flora, booths, interiors, floats, murals, mall décor and the like. We start from the scratch of drafting client's or approved, projected ideas to the succeeding construction procedures to the final reality and guaranteed achievement of the finished product.
Bravura Events & Co. is based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, although differing projects necessitates travel around the UAE and the Middle East as a whole.
Bravura does not work on exclusivity; rather, we accommodate and work around all budgets and dispositions. As a customer perk, we can proudly offer that everything under the sun is feasible and fresh and exquisite talent is not object. So let Bravura Events Management craft and enhance your dream design, event or show into a perfect reality.
