Weekend Adventure in Tohoku - Yamadera & Sakunami Onsen - Go!Go!Tohoku!! Japan Travel:
In my opinion, if you visit Japan, an Onsen (hot springs) overnight stay is one of the best experiences you can get. Not a lot of tourists actually do that. Miyagi Prefecture is blessed with so many hot spring resorts.
Put your Yukata on, sleep on tatami mats and enjoy the indoor and outdoor Onsen. Moreover, if you book the dinner and breakfast option (which is highly recommended), you can experience a local and seasonal multi-course meal (kaiseki style) which is so beautifully presented. Almost too beautiful to eat! And now just relax and recover during your Onsen stay.

Sakunami Onsen is a village onsen outside of Sendai city in Miyagi. Discovered in 1300, Sakunami onsen quickly became quite popular and it still is to this day today. The village is nothing more than a huge resort now with a huge five luxury hotel complex tailored around enjoying the onsen. Today’s video was shot in one of these luxury hotels, the Yuzukushi Salon, who was kind enough to open its doors for us before opening hours.

Must Try Sendai, Japan Specialty!!
Hi Everyone, we are trying out #Sendai Tanya Rikyu Toukyou Eki in Sendai station. The famous grill beef #tongue! It is a signature dish in Sendai, #Japan! When you are here, you got to try this. We are heading to #Akita prefecture to enjoy some the mountain onsen, hot spring. We unbox an #Ekiben, a form of bento box that you can get in the train station. It is a must pick up when you are riding Japan bullet train! The place we ended up is at #Ganiba #Onsen. After getting lost and a lot of asking around, we found our way to the onsen while picking up a nice sweet treat! It is very beautiful! Mountain onsen while it was snowing is really magical. Public mix bath in the snow is awesome! If you are up for it, we highly recommend it!

Water of Sakunami Onsen Village
Intimate symbol of Sendai: the Hirose River.
At its headwaters lies Sakunami.
It's a soothing place, only 40 minutes from the heart of Sendai.
Here from nature's splendor gush forth magnificent hot springs.
Inns line the river in the narrow valley.
Introducing stricken Tōhoku's charming hot spring resort:
Sakunami
Garnering first mention among Sakunami's appeals is the water.
The presence of a whisky distillery, for which water is life, belies its quality.
Nikka Whisky won top prize at the World Whiskies Awards three consecutive years.
Founder Masataka Taketsuru set out to find the best water to be had
and his travels took him here, to Sakunami.

Recap: so my friends came to visit me in Japan! Now, I only had the weekend with them so
I designed a one day itinerary with three parts: 1) hike Yamadera, 2) relax at Sakunami Onsen, and 3) check out the light up in Matsushima.
Crazy, but totally doable!
This video shows you the second leg of our 1 day trip!
Today, Leslie, Steph and myself say goodbye to my ALT friends to meet #phyinjapan and Yuzo at Sakunami Onsen!
Onsens are definitely a must try when visiting Japan and Ichinobo is one of my favorites! I can’t show you the baths, but I will show you what the hotel and the resting space is like!
Stay tuned for episode 9 when we go to Matsushima all in the same day!
Please Like and Subscribe! I would appreciate it!
Let’s goooo! Seize the day! #roleyadventures

How to get there: take the Senzan line from Sendai to Yamagata and get off at Sakunami! You willl see
Kokeshi statues!
Tip!
I highly recommend getting the “Marugoto” pass for 2670 yen! It’s a two day unlimited travel pass on bus, subway, and trains all around Sendai and extends even to Yamadera! This is the perfect pass to visit Akiu, Yamadera, Sakunami, and even Matsushima all during the weekend! Timing is important, so if you have questions message below and I will give you some tips!
Make Yourself at Home in Sakunami
Today we bring you a legend from the fallen Taira clan, local gourmet specialties, and a new style inn all connected with Jōgi-san in the Sakunami area.
An easy day spent relaxing at a hot spring resort like Sakunami sure sounds like a nice treat.

Akiu Onsen Hotel - Sendai
This was my private onsen view at Akiu Onsen, Up near Sendai. I visited here during late Januray and it was well and truly inside winter.
The views were incredible.
One thing I hear a lot from people is, oh, you have tattoos so you cannot go to onsen in Japan *serious face*. That is just not true at all. I have been to both public and private onsen in Japan.
Many are opening their doors to people with tattoos. Easiest way to know, ring the onsen prior to booking/visiting. They'll let you know. If the public baths are not ok, many will have private baths available to you. Like Akiu Onsen Hotel.
Another tool I like to tell people about is the website - Tattoo Spot. It is a website that compiles a list of all the tattoo friendly onsens and baths around Japan. The website is all in japanese but it translates fine using the standard google website translate.

Visiting onsen is one of THOSE things in Japan... It is a truly beautiful experience. Please, do try it.
