Today we went to Sakuranomiya, Okawa river, Osaka to watch the cherry blossom. It is one of the most popular places for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in Osaka. It will take 2 or 3 more days for full blossom of the cherry trees so may be we'll be back soon. May be we'll take a river walk on one of the many boats (there was even an amphibian bus)! Tsurutokame, an all-female Kaiseki Restaurant located in the high-end Ginza district of Tokyo, is set to change an industry that's currently dominated by male chefs. We had a life-changing dining experience at the restaurant and interviewed the head-chef, Yubako Kamohara to find out firsthand, what it’s like being a woman in the food and restaurant industry in Japan, and what aspirations she has for other female chefs who are finding their place in Japan's elite culinary scene.
Tsurutokame has earned its well deserved fame since its opening, with a current waiting list that’s months-long. Part of its popularity is due to how economical the experience is at only 10,000¥ to 16,000¥, which is unheard of for Kaiseki, as well as how varied the menu is. We devored 10 delicate dishes carefully curated by the female chefs - the menu changes on a daily basis, with all chefs working together to decide on the techniques, styles and flavors to be implemented for the night. The chefs even curated a full vegan Kaiseki menu for me, while serving the rest of the restaurant their traditional menu. They put just as much effort into my food as everyone else’s and it really showed. This alone blows me away, since many high-level chefs will simply refuse a vegan diner or any kind of special order.
Kaiseki is one of the best dining experiences one can have in Tokyo. More than a traditional multi-course dinner, Kaiseki is also is the epitome of Japanese haute cuisine and is considered the highest-level genre of restaurant in Japan. Kaiseki is not just a meal, it is an art form. If you are planning a trip to Tokyo soon, be sure to include this in your foodie list. Since it's so popular, it's best to book seats as early as you know you'll be in Tokyo.

Sakuranomiya 桜ノ宮 Best Sakura Place in Osaka
This week we had a full cherry trees bloom in Kansai. Many places burst with a sea of delicate flowers, looking from distance like they are covered with cotton candy. One of best places for cherry blossom viewing (hanami) is the bank of Okawa river in Osaka, around JR Sakuranomiya station. This was an obligatory point in our cherry blossom celebration programme :) We went there with our friend Kent and his Mom. We were lucky to have a good weather as this week is exceptionally rainy. As every year we enjoyed a stroll in the tunnel of of cherry trees in bloom, had a picnic under the tree and tasted some food sold at stands along river. Such a marvelous day!
