STORYLINE:
A group of American nationals in the Japanese city of Sendai boarded coaches bound for Narita airport on Saturday evening, after heeding consular advice to leave the area.
The coaches were laid on by the US Embassy to transport them out of the area and onto flights out of the country, amid continuing concerns about the troubled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant.
Evacuee Steven Hatfield, 49, said people were worried about the nuclear reactors right now.
Hatfield, who is originally from the US state of Pennsylvania, has been teaching English in Sendai for the past 15 years.
I am very thankful to the American Embassy, but I have mixed feelings leaving friends and family in Sendai, he said.
Many foreign nationals have made plans to leave Japan, which is struggling to cope with the devastation caused by last week's 9.0 magnitude earthquake and the ensuing tsunami that flattened towns and cities in the country's north.
Emergency crews reconnected electricity to some of the cooling systems at the overheating nuclear facility on Saturday, but it was still unclear if their cooling systems will work.
The main concern has shifted to the pools at the plant used to store spent nuclear fuel rods.
Water in at least one pool - in the complex's Unit 3 - is believed to be dangerously low, exposing the rods. Without enough water, the rods may heat further and release radiation.
Other countries, including the UK, France, and the Czech Republic, have also started to evacuate their citizens from Japan in recent days.
