Japan's Crazy Desert Revealed: Tottori Sand Dune Adventure ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Yes, Japan has a desert compete with camels, sane dunes and ... a world class art museum with sand sculptures! This time, John heads to this barren wasteland devoid of vending machines for a taste of the Sahara – in Japan.
100,000 years ago, this area turned into a desert because sand flew in from the sea accumulating over many millennia. The result is a 16 km by 2 km wide desert that was growing until about 50 years ago when the city residents decided enough was enough.
MORE HISTORY:
After World War 2, a barricade was built to prevent tsunami and residents planted trees to stop the desertification. Now the desert area is shrinking and because of its uniqueness and lure for domestic and international tourism, the residents no longer want to stop it. In fact, 6000 volunteers in 2015 come out every few months to put pull out the vegetation all in the name of ecology!
History and problems aside, this place rocks!
50 meter high sand dunes overlook the beautiful Sea of Japan to the horizon.
THE SAND MUSEUM:
I didn't just come here for the sand dunes.
The SAND MUSEUM is a world class art museum produced by Chaen Katsuhiko who tells us his story and the reason why the Tottori Sand Dunes are so special in the world today.
Indeed, it's become a center of sand sculpting with a massive indoor enclosure housing dozens of sand sculpture displays created by guest artists from around the world and a place of pride for the city to Tottori.
Every year THE SAND MUSEUM has a major theme with new designs, reusing the sand to make a new world for visitors. This year's theme is South America and it's history with a special emphasis on Rio DeJanaro which hosted the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Konnichi wa mina-san TOTTI desu!!! ????

Riding a CAMEL in JAPAN|Day 69 - Tottori
The Tottori Sand Dunes (鳥取砂丘, Tottori Sakyu) are the largest sand dunes in Japan and Tottori's most famous tourist attraction. Located just outside the city center, they span roughly 16 kilometers of coast along of the Sea of Japan and are up to two kilometers wide and 50 meters high. They are part of the Sanin Kaigan National Park.
The sand dunes were created over thousands of years, as sand from the nearby Sendaigawa River was washed out to sea and eventually redeposited along the coast by the ocean's currents. Today, the constant movement of the tides and the coastal winds continuously shape the sand dunes and provide an ever changing landscape.

Tottori (鳥取市 Tottori-shi?) is the capital city of Tottori Prefecture in the Chūgoku region of Japan.
As of February 28, 2015, the city has an estimated population of 192,800, with 78,431 households and a population density of 251.92 persons per km². The total area is 765.31 km².
Within Japan the city is best known for its sand dunes which are a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from outside of the prefecture. The sand dunes are also important as a centre for research into arid agriculture, hosting Tottori University's Arid Land Research Center. Most of Tottori is located in the western part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark.[c
The Sand Museum (砂の美術館 Suna no Bijutsukan?) first opened by the Tottori Sand Dunes, Tottori, Japan in 2006, displaying sand sculptures in temporary facilities. In 2012 it reopened in what is said to be the world's first permanent indoor exhibition space dedicated to the art, with works by fifteen international sculptors.[1]

The Tottori Sand Dunes (鳥取砂丘, Tottori Sakyu) is Tottori’s most famous tourist attraction. The sand dunes are located outside the center of the city; they are a part of the Sanin Kaigan National Park.
Being the largest in Japan, the Tottori Sand Dunes span 16 kilometers along the Sea of Japan coast. Being along the coast, the tides and winds constantly reshape the sand dunes to a new design.
Between the visitor center and the sea is the main sightseeing area. Visitors will find many of the largest sand dunes here. Walking to the top of the tall dune will enable visitors to experience breathtaking sea views. From this location, visitors can see the trails of never-ending sand in almost every direction.
Beside the sand dune, there are other tourist attractions in this areas. There are camel rides as well as horse drawn carts to travel through the dunes. Adventurous visitors have the option to try paragliding or sandboarding (similar to snowboarding) here as well.
Next to the dunes is The Sand Museum, a unique museum which displays large sand sculptures by artists from around the world. In the past, the exhibits were held outdoors or in temporary structures but since 2012, the sculptors are displayed in their permanent home.
The span of an exhibit is from mid April to early January of the following year. Each exhibit has its own theme which is usually a country or a region. For 2014, the theme is Russia. The current show started on April 19, 2014 and will close on January 4, 2015.

The Porous System is useful for agriculture in arid areas. Studies have shown three times more important yields thanks to its utilization. Made out of calcium and silica sand, Porous Alpha is harmless to the environment.

Located 10 minutes away by foot from Tottori Station in the direction of the former castle lays the Fukurogawa River. Fukurogawa River is a tributary of Sendai River.
Fukurogawa River, famous for the cherry blossom trees which line both sides of the river, flows through central Tottori. From early to mid April, visitors can take advantage of the narrow walking trail which follows the river to walk alongside the beautiful cherry blossoms. The trail of cherry tree is about 1.5 kilometers.
