Salamanca is about 90 minutes away from Madrid by train. I highly recommend you visit Salamanca if you will be in Madrid. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain and can be easily visited as a day trip.

A Walk Through The Salamanca Neighborhood of Madrid, Spain
SALAMANCA is Madrid’s most upscale neighbourhood. Let’s call it Madrid’s “Upper East Side”. Located just above Retiro Park and to the East of the Castellana, this neighborhood’s two main streets are Serrano and Velázquez (as are the metro stops with the same name). It is much quieter than the other neighbourhoods mentioned on this list. As in most fancy neighborhoods, you will find the high-end shoe stores, top-notch restaurants and prime real estate. Barrio Salamanca is no exception. However, chique nightclubs and lounges aside, you will also be pleasantly surprised to find many hidden gems. After all, Salamanca is a neighborhood where people live in, and they too have mom and pop shops and friendly bars. You just have to search for them…

Salamanca is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Madrid. Besides having beautiful buildings, it is famous for the shopping, mainly for luxury goods. This video shows the side streets and the wide Velazquez street.

From Madrid, to Salamanca, Spain - Workaway Spain // 042
Traveling from Madrid to Salamanca, Spain! Only a 3 hour bus ride, but first, gotta catch the bus! Some advice I was given about traveling through Europe, Just get to your bus on time, and you'll be fine! And I'd thought that'd be easy-peasy! But, uh, I clearly hadn't been traveling very long when I said that.
Despite leaving the hostel an HOUR before my bus was scheduled to depart (and with an expected 30 minute travel time to the station), I arrived at 3:29, one minute before my bus was supposed to leave! Turns out the shuttle I was directed to was either not the right one, or I poorly communicated to the driver which stop I needed to exit at (probably the latter). The driver of the shuttle, with all kindness and concern, advised me to get off at a certain stop, then go around the corner to the bus station. Extremely thankful, I followed his advice. However, according to Google Maps, which I checked as I exited the shuttle, I was only one-third of the way to the station I needed to be at. A super fast power-walk ensued. Me and my backpack vs. time! Time nearly won. But I made it!
Once on the bus, it was a beautiful ride through rural spain to Salamanca, Spain, where I expected to be picked up by my next Workaway family. With a mushed croissant and peanut butter for dinner, I enjoyed the time to catch my breath and relax.
Once in Salamanca, my very sweet Workaway family was at the station to greet me! The two parents, twin 10-year-olds, and I piled into the car for the 45-minute ride to Vitigudino, the tiny rural city I'll be staying in for the next 26 days.

1. Segovia - the town with a Roman aqueduct, amazing cathedral and castle / alcazar makes for an easy 30 minute train ride or hour and a half bus ride from Madrid. Eat the suckling pig!
2. Toledo - the former capital of Spain and the seat of the Catholic church in Spain, Toledo offers cool streets to wander through, a great cathedral, a cool armaments museum & more.
3. El Escorial - the royal palace outside of Madrid is a cool way to see all the pomp and circumstance of the Spanish & European court.
4. Avila - this walled city let's you literally climb the walls and see a number of historic buildings such as their cathedral.
