Places to see in ( Salamanca - Spain ) Palacio de Monterrey
The Palace of Monterrey of Salamanca , Spain , is one of the greatest exponents of artistic style plateresco . Built by the Third Count of Monterrey , Palacio de Monterrey is currently owned by the Casa de Alba , which is the owner of said county.
Palacio de Monterrey was a building very much admired and imitated in the nineteenth century , giving rise to the so-called Monterrey or Neoplateresque style , a historicism that retakes the aesthetics of the Plateresque . Palacio de Monterrey was declared a National Historic Landmark, equivalent to the current term BIC with category of Monument, on 6 May 1929.
The palace of Monterrey, located in the center of the city of Salamanca , made him build - in the style of the Italian Renaissance - Don Alonso de Zúñiga and Acevedo Fonseca , III Count of Monterrey. Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón and Fray Martin de Santiago sketched the plans of the palace, and Pedro de Ibarra and Pedro de Miguel and Aguirre began construction on January 18 , 1539 . Since then it would become one of the most representative works of the Spanish Renaissance, although it is an unfinished building because its complete project was much greater. Its image (with towers and sumptuous decoration) symbolizes the great nobility of the Spanish Golden Age.
The project provided for a three-story quadrangular building and a central courtyard, with towers at each corner and in the center of each wing. In the end only one of the wings was constructed, the one of the south. In the corners, lions and dream animals, designed by Fray Martín de Santiago, hold shields with the arms of Zúñiga, Acevedo, Ulloa, Sotomayor and Fonseca. The gallery of the last body has Renaissance arches. The balconies and windows are decorated with Plateresque decoration.
Being one of the main properties of the Casa de Alba , this building houses valuable works of art. In it two landscape pictures were identified as originals of the Valencian painter José de Ribera ; are dated in 1639 and are the only examples of landscape independent of all its production. Also present are the painting Jason with the Dragon , by Salvatore Rosa , and another work attributed to Annibale Carracci . In any case, the bulk of the ducal collections are kept in the palace of Liria of Madrid , the main residence of the Alba.
The Monterey Palace has influenced many Spanish buildings of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, such as the Palencia de la Diputación de Palencia , the work of Jerome Arroyo in 1916 , the Archaeological Museum of Seville by Anibal Gonzalez in 1919 or the Academy of Caballería de Valladolid by Adolfo Pierrad of 1924 .

The Convento de San Esteban is a Dominican monastery situated in the Plaza del Concilio de Trento in the city of Salamanca. The Dominicans settled in Salamanca in about 1255, but their original monastery was demolished to construct the parish church of St. Stephen in 1524, at the initiative of Cardinal Juan Álvarez de Toledo.
Construction took until 1610, and involved Martin de Santiago, Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, Juan Ribero Rada and Pedro Gutiérrez. However, the layout and design are by Juan de Álava, who began the work in 1524, as evidenced by a plan in his possession. Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón was involved with the transepts and the dome. Although the church is considered to be an excellent example of the Plateresque style, the long period of construction explains the mixture of styles ranging from Gothic to the late Baroque, the latter not so noticeable in the architecture but very apparent in the reredos of the main altar by José de Churriguera.
According to tradition, Christopher Columbus stayed in this monastery (actually in the earlier building it replaced) when he came to Salamanca to defend his idea of reaching the Indies by sailing west, against the geographers of the University. During the Counter Reformation it was an important center where for the Dominicans who founded the School of Salamanca, headed by Francisco de Vitoria.
The monastery houses the Pontifical Theological Faculty of St. Stephen, founded in 1947, successor to the General Study of Theology which was set up in San Esteban in 1222. Activities of the Faculty include the Conversations of San Esteban, the San Esteban School of Theology and the St. Thomas Aquinas Internet School of Theology at fatse.org. It also has its own publishing house.
San Esteban is also the canonical seat of the Dominican Fraternity of Holy Christ of the Good Death which makes its penitential procession in Salamanca's Holy Week at dawn on Good Friday, and the Royal and Pontifical Sacrament Confraternity of Mary, Mother of God of the Rosary and St. Pius V fraternity of glory, restarted recently after years of inactivity.

The main light of the viaduct will become the first arch bridge more high speed light of the world (surpassing Dashegguan bridge in China, with 336 m). When compared only with concrete arch bridges, will become the third most light in the world (second only to the Wanxian bridge in China (420 m) and close to the larger of the two bridges between the islands of Sveti Marko and Krk in Croatia (390 m)) and the first if we restrict ourselves to the railway use (and not high speed), exceeding by more than 100 m to the bridge over the lake Froschgrund line in Germany in Nuremberg - Erfurt (270 m ).
