Salt Lake City: A Downtown Story
Salt Lake City: A Downtown Story
Living/Losing the American Dream Panel Discussion
The discussion focused on the definition of the ‘American Dream’ as seen by those who were born here and those who immigrated here. Asking questions like, what is the American dream? Are you living it or losing it? And does the dream still exist?
Moderated by Terry Gildea, KUER News Director
Panelists: Rep. Angela Romero, Tim Chambless, Elaine Jarvik, Safi Safiullah
Terry Gildea served as our moderator. Since 2011, Terry has led KUER’s Newsroom helping produce award winning coverage of local and statewide news. He came to Utah from San Antonio where he spent four years as a reporter and host at Texas Public Radio. While at KSTX, he created, produced and hosted the station's first local talk show, The Source; he covered San Antonio's military community for the station and for NPR's Impact of War Project. Terry's features on wounded warriors, families on the home front and veterans navigating life after war have aired on Morning Edition, Weekend Edition and All Things Considered. His half-hour radio documentary exploring the burn unit at Brooke Army Medical Center was honored by the Houston Press and the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters. Prior to his position in San Antonio, Terry covered Congress for two years with Capitol News Connection and Public Radio International. He holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Washington and a master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. He moderated several SLAC panel discussions, most recently the November 2014 panel discussion in conjunction with RAPTURE, BLISTER, BURN.
Rep. Angela Romero was elected to the Utah State Legislature in 2012. Representing House District 26, Angela has been an advocate for issues that matter to working families in the district. Angela is the Community Programs & Operations Manager for the Sorenson Unity Center where she oversees community programming in the Glendale, Poplar Grove and Rose Park neighborhoods. Through her work with residents and community organizations, she is able to implement programming that best serves the community.
Tim Chambless is an Associate Professor/Lecturer in the Department of Political Science and the Academic Outreach Coordinator for the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah. He speaks frequently to community groups and to the news media on politics and government. This play is very interesting to Tim – for academic reasons, for personal family reasons. July 4th their daughter Dominique will marry her long-time boyfriend, Mike, whose father was born and raised in Pakistan. They have had interesting and provocative talks with Ali -- their future father-in-law. Together, they have explored matters found in this play: “Two Stories.”
Elaine Jarvik’s play “(a man enters)”, co-written with her daughter Kate Jarvik Birch, was produced by SLAC in 2011. Her 10-minute play “Dead Right” was produced at the 2008 Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville, KY and is included in the textbook The Bedford Introduction to Literature. “Thank you to Tim Slover and his Advanced Playwriting Class at the University of Utah; to members of my two playwriting groups; to Kate Jarvik Birch, Tyler Jarvik, Tanya Jarvik and my friends — for endless conversations about plot and character. And of course to Keven, Cynthia and everyone at SLAC!
Safi Safiullah is originally from Bangladesh. He studied at the University of Dhaka and graduated from the University of Benghazi in Libya with a BA degree in teaching History. In 1983, Safi moved to Canada to pursue a higher education and received a MA degree in History, specializing in South Asian Middle Eastern Studies. Salt Lake School for Performing Arts, Salt Lake City, UT
In mid-August John Oliver, the host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, leveled a very unfair, unfortunate, unbalanced, unwarranted and generally unhinged tirade against charter schools.
Here is a brief summary of Mr. Oliver’s presentation: “Some charter schools have been mismanaged. Ergo, ipso facto, presto change-o, all charter schools are bad, bad, bad.”
As we said, it was very unfortunate – especially since the show has been viewed by more than five million people and is being used as a propaganda piece against charters everywhere.
But thanks to CER’s “Hey John Oliver! Back Off My Charter School!” Video Contest, you now have the chance to help set the record straight and let people know how much charter schools are helping their children, families, teachers and communities.
AND you have the chance to win $100,000 for your school.

The County Seat - Jail Programming
We are on location in beaver County in the beaver County Jail complex for our program.
The topic we’re going to be talking about is jail programming and contracting of jails. For many of
Utah's rural counties It's become a center or a cornerstone of how their jail systems work by
helping the state with inmates through contracting. We are going to focus today on programming
and its importance.

SLC Fire Captain John Kartsone talks about Ensign Peak Fire - July 25, 2018
Salt Lake City District Captain John Kartsone talks about the Ensign Fire that sparked near the Ensign Peak Trail, just north of the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, July 24, 2018.
The fire spread swiftly, prompting Salt Lake City Fire Command officers to declare a three-alarm fire within 15 minutes after arriving on scene.
Crews attacked the blaze aggressively, and then quickly called in support from the Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service and American Red Cross.
Salt Lake City Police Department and Salt Lake City Emergency Management also sprung into action, implementing the city's emergency-response strategy.
An estimated 100 acres were burned. The fire reportedly damaged the exterior of only one home.
The fire was 95 percent contained within only three hours.
Three firefighters suffered minor injuries in the incident. Two endured heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, and the third sustained a minor leg injury (not burn-related). All three firefighters were transported to University Hospital, and released to recuperate at home.
Two civilians also reportedly suffered smoke inhalation. Their names and conditions were not released. The Ensign fire was the first incident for which SLC Fire utilized its newly acquired pumpkin tanks, which are portable water-storage units that allow a helicopter to acquire water and use aerial-firefighting techniques.
The Salt Lake City Council approved the purchase of the pumpkin tanks as part of a proactive plan, determined not stop Salt Lake City from falling victim to widespread wildfire devastation -- as has become pervasive in many dry, hot areas.
Mayor Jackie Biskupski sent her thanks to those involved in the effort, and she reaffirmed the city's commitment to funding important public safety initiatives. She conveyed that this tremendous response by SLC Fire easily justifies a recent $500,000 allocation for auxiliary apparatus used to fight wildfires such as these.
