Dennis HANISAK 4/5/17 The Indian River Lagoon: “You Can Observe a Lot by Just Watching”
About the Lecture
The goal of the Indian River Lagoon Observatory (IRLO) is to investigate ecological relationships in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and how they are impacted by natural and human-induced stressors. An important IRLO component is a network of advanced observing stations: the Indian River Lagoon Observatory Network of Environmental Sensors (IRLON). IRLON now has 10 sites in the IRL and St. Lucie Estuary (SLE) to provide real-time, high-accuracy, and high-resolution water quality and weather data through an interactive website (
This lecture will provide an update on IRLON, with a focus on observations of major events in the IRL and SLE in 2016, including the impacts of 9 months of freshwater releases from Lake Okeechobee and the resulting cyanobacteria blooms, as well as natural events, such as Hurricane Matthew. IRLON allows all of us – scientists, managers, educators, students, and the public – to directly observe long-term ecosystem changes and those driven by events, such as freshwater discharges, droughts, storms, and algal blooms, as they happen, from wherever we are.

2016 SKA National Championship Tournament Announcement Presser
Southern Kingfish Association’s National Championship Tournament Returning to Fort Pierce
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 28, 2016
FORT PIERCE - St. Lucie County, in partnership with the City of Fort Pierce and the Treasure Coast Sports Commission, has secured the 2016 Southern Kingfish Association’s National Championship Tournament to be held in Fort Pierce Nov. 7-13. The event is expected to draw hundreds of anglers and tournament sponsors from around the country bringing positive economic impact and exposure to the area.
Fort Pierce was the host location in 2010 for the SKA’s National Championship Tournament, generating an estimated $750,000 in economic impact, but with the Fort Pierce City Marina’s recent expansion and a healthier economy, county and city officials are hopeful that the event will bring 250-300 teams to the area generating an even larger economic impact. The Treasure Coast Sports Commission (TCSC), which is funded by the St. Lucie County Tourist Development Council using county tourist taxes, will be the funding agency for the event. In addition to the 2016 host agreement, the SKA has committed to hosting the nationals every three years in Fort Pierce and during off years, the SKA has agreed to add Fort Pierce to the tournament’s Pro Tour schedule.
“The mission of the Treasure Coast Sports Commission’s mission is not only to recruit sporting events, but to retain them. This multi-year contract allows us to work with the SKA on an annual basis, rather than just every three years. This is excellent for our area and hopefully sets the stage to bring future national tournaments by other fishing organizations to Fort Pierce,” said Rick Hatcher, executive director of the Treasure Coast Sports Commission.
St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky, who also serves as the chairman of the Tourist Development Council, was instrumental in securing the event making the initial contact to Southern Kingfish Association (SKA) proposing Fort Pierce as its next host city. “We all are familiar with the connotation of the Treasure Coast. To anglers they know that our fishing grounds are a treasure trove in themselves. With securing this agreement with the Southern Kingfish Association with a multi-year commitment, our area businesses, hoteliers, restaurants, and tourist venues will benefit annually from the treasures they will experience.”
St. Lucie, Florida is home to the historic City of Fort Pierce, the vibrant City of Port St. Lucie and the beautiful uncrowded beaches of Hutchinson Island. St. Lucie is located on the Atlantic Ocean along the east coast of Florida, 120 miles southeast of Orlando and 115 miles north of Miami with direct access from Florida’s Turnpike, Interstate 95 and State Road 70. The area offers an array of visitor activities including beautiful beaches, championship golf, outdoor and nature adventures for eco-tourists, a thriving arts and cultural scene, world class fishing and dozens of unique attractions. A variety of affordable accommodations such as hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts, vacation condos/homes and an all-inclusive resort are available. For more details visit visitstluciefla.com.
For more information call St. Lucie County Tourism Manager Charlotte Bireley, at 772-462-1539 or email bireleyc@stlucieco.org or log on to visitstluciefla.com.

Dr. Dennis HANISAK 01 22 14 : Indian River Lagoon Observatory
The Indian River Lagoon Observatory (IRLO) was initiated to investigate ecological relationships in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and how they are impacted by natural and human-induced stressors. An important component of IRLO is the development of a network of advanced observing stations in the Lagoon. Recently deployed Land/Ocean Biogeochemical Observatory (LOBO) units provide real-time, high-accuracy and high-resolution water quality data through an interactive website. This enables all of us -- scientists, managers, educators, students, and the public -- to better observe long-term ecosystem changes and those driven by events such as freshwater discharges, algal blooms, storms, and droughts.
This lecture will first explore what is water quality, a term that includes a number of physical, chemical, and biological components. Collectively they impact initially the base of the food web (seagrasses and algae) and ultimately the diversity and productivity of the entire ecosystem. Introducing this LOBO network into the IRL will provide scientists of various disciplines from many organizations reliable, continuous observatory data to better quantify and model relationships between environmental factors and biological processes in the IRL.

Extreme Saltwater Fishing!
You may live your life and never see anything like this! The entire Sebastian inlet was filled with pinfish. The tarpon, redfish and snook were so thick you could walk on them. We took a piece of stingray out for shark bait. While Josh was taking photos with the red, the Avet 80 started screaming! Jeff fought the shark and eventually the line broke. Jeff caught a two redfish (only one is shown in this video) and I caught a 44 redfish. This was an amazing sight to see! Jahorace Epps helped film this video.

How to Rig Live Shrimp for Fishing - Most Effective Technique!
Here is a great in depth tutorial on how to rig live shrimp for fishing. Shrimp is one of the most effective baits you can use, rigging them naturally will help trigger the most aggressive strikes while helping your hook up ratio. For the first rigging technique, I demonstrate how to hook a live or whole shrimp in the horn, after the gaglion. This technique allows for complete range of motion and give the most natural presentation without harming the shrimp.
The second technique is to run the hook from bottom to top through the tail and out the back. This is a great technique to hide the hook and give a great flicking motion from the shrimp. I also favor this rigging style because of the ease of casting.
The third technique is similar to the second but instead of running the hook through the bottom to the top you hook the side of the tail.
Lastly, probably the most gruesome is removing the tail and running the hook through the shrimp and pulling the barb out of the under side of the shrimp. This way the bait cast well but also allows scent to flow through the water column attracting larger prey.
