Costa Rica has been My home for the past 7years and there was no Real source for investigating the Cuisine and getting an in depth look into the Food. From Fridge to Fry Pan to Plate. I travel Latin America Surfing and reviewing all my favorite Spots that I have come across along the way. From well known watering holes to locals only fish shacks Fat Surfer TV takes you thru Costa Rica's hideaways and hotspots.
So I was Off for Tamarindo to do a Concert for a Local Charity I decided to Try out what all my friends had been Talking about. Brian and His wife moved from Colorado to Costa Rica a few years ago and found themselves a nice void in the Tamarindo area to Fill! BBQ!
Brian brings a bit of BBQ to The Costa Rican Beaches. One of my friends and Tamarindo Local was telling me before Longboards came to town he used to drive an hour away every Sunday just to buy some BBQ on the road side. In come the Smokers, Nothing Like the smell of Meat cooking over woodsmoke!
Brian brings out a Carolina style Pulled then chopped Brisket and Pork Butt that he smokes, a Deliciously fluffy smoked fish that makes killer tacos. Gigantic Pork Spare Ribs (I ate so much I will have to try them the next time I'm in town, and I' ll give y'all my review). Longboards offers 3 different types of BBQ sauce Hot, Sweet, and Carolina style. I liked the sweet best but I am partial to sweet BBQ sauces, the hot was nice with a low heat nothing to overwhelm the meat and wood flavors. He uses Neesbro and Nacete local Hard woods. He does Chicken as well. (again I had my fill so its chicken and ribs next time in town!).
I had the Brisket Tacos it is not a Texas style brisket, think more Carolina style chopped BBQ. Very Tasty. Lean and Juicy. I smothered it one half sweet sauce and one hot sauce. The Pulled Pork Sandwich was tasty I had half with the spicy sauce and half with the Carolina sauce. My Burger which was perfectly medium Rare got doused with sweet sauce and the other half hot. He does traditional and tropical slaw, His own beans and salsa, and guacamole. As I was Enjoying some of my food I heard two Girls eating chips and guacamole, ask Brian what he seasoned his taco chips with, he answered raw sugar and salt, it is his standard seasoning for his amazing fries too. He uses Costa Rican Naïve Root Vegetables. The Yucca, which he slices like rigged Potato chips and they are delightful. They are crunchy and yet maintain some of the chew and starch of the vegetable. He said thru trial and error he learned too long and they are just toooo crispy. The Camote, is another local root vegetable Brian described it as something in between a water chestnut and a less sweet, sweet potato. The Camote fries are AMAZING I really liked them.
Costa Rican potatoes seem to have a higher water content or something I cant quite put my finger on it but they are hard to cook and get right, I know from running my own place down here and the heartache of the Potato. Great job Brian for not conforming and serving fresh takes on potato classics and doing it FRESH!
His onion rings are great and Not an easy thing to find in Costa Rica. His secret seasoning is SPOT ON!
Longboard's A'ced the test, for the type of place you want to go to on vacation, a taste of home with a local twist, Quality food, clean kitchen, great prices, nice atmosphere, and good vibes, coupled with plasma Tv's and American football I know where I'll be for the Super Bowl!
