Leonard Knight was one of America's greatest folk artists. He spent thirty years building and painting Salvation Mountain in Slab City, California. He re-purposed bales of hay, millions of gallons of paint and adobe to build this place. The theme of love is everywhere. It's fifty feet high and one hundred and fifty feet wide. Today Ella and Ron take care of it and keep the desert from eroding it away. It's just south east of the Salton Sea in Southern California.

Interview with Leonard Knight, Creator of Salvation Mountain - Niland, California
Driving Equality is a 107-day, 16,000-mile, 48-state trek across America to collect stories from LGBTQ people in an effort to raise awareness of the various forms of discrimination faced by our community in each state of the nation. Highlighting the differences in rights, laws, and amendments between the states will shed light on the current social standing of queer individuals today. I hope to create a dialogue about the disparities across the nation, and what can be done to end discrimination for all.
During the 107-day trip, I am meeting with LGBTQ community organizers, activists, and any citizens willing to talk, as well as our opposition. Through these interviews, I will gain an understanding of the current political climates, and explore ways of combating discrimination. Throughout my journey, I will make frequent posts on the website, including photos and video clips.
⚠️Sonny Bono Refuge, Slab City, Salvation Mountain⚠️

1. Sonny Bono Salton Sea Refuge:
The Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refugeis located 40 miles north of the Mexicanborder at the southern end of the Salton Sea in California’s Imperial Valley. Situated along the Pacific Flyway, the Refuge is the only one of its kind, located 227 feet below sea level. Because of its southern latitude, elevation and location in theColorado Desert, the Refuge experiences some of the highest temperatures in the nation. Daily temperatures from May to October generally exceed 100 °F with temperatures of 116°–120 °F recorded yearly.

The refuge was established as a sanctuary and breeding ground for birds and wild animals in 1930. In 1998, the refuge was renamed after CongressmanSonny Bono, who played an active role in trying to save the Salton Sea. Originally, it included approximately 37,600 acres. Nearly 60 percent of the original acreage was an open salinelake with the remainder being shoreline alkali flats, freshwater wetlands, native desert scrub and upland (farm fields). Due to the inflow of agricultural effluent and a subsequent rise in the level of the Salton Sea, all of the original Refuge area has been inundated. At present, only about 2,200 acres manageable remain suitable for farming and wetland development.
2. Slab City or The Slabs:
The largely a snowbirdcommunity in the Sonoran Desert located in Imperial County, California, 156 miles northeast of San Diegowithin the California Badlands, and used byrecreational vehicle owners and squatters from across North America. It took its name fromconcrete slabs that remained from the abandonedWorld War II Marine Corps barracks of Camp Dunlap.
Slab City
The site is both decommissioned and uncontrolled, and there is no charge for parking. The site has no official electricity, running water, sewers, toilets or trash pickup service. Many residents use generatorsor solar panels to generate electricity. The closest body of civilization with proper law enforcement is approximately four miles southwest of Slab City inNiland where the residents often go to do basic shopping. As a result, the site is described by its inhabitants and news outlets like Vice News as a miniature de facto enclave of anarchy.
In 1942 the construction of Camp Dunlap began to prepare the United States Marine Corps for combat duty. By 1949 military operations at Camp Dunlap had been greatly reduced, but a skeleton crew continued until the base was dismantled. By 1956 all buildings were dismantled, but the slabs remained.
As of October 6, 1961, a quitclaim deed conveying the land to the State of California was issued by the Department of Defense as it was determined the land was no longer required. The deed did not contain any restrictions, recapture clauses or restoration provisions. All of the former Camp Dunlap buildings had been removed. The remaining slabs were not proposed for removal. Later, legislation required that revenue generated from this property go to theCalifornia State Teachers Retirement System.
At some point, a chemical company in Oakland hired 20 men to harvest creosote leaves near Niland. Some workers moved closer to work by living in small trailers at the abandoned Camp Dunlap. This was the start of what is now called Slab City.
By 1965 migration to Slab City had begun. Riverside County ordered people to leave a camping area atPainted Canyon near Mecca. These people had all sorts of living arrangements; besides trailers, there were cardboard and plywood shacks, and a variety of vehicles and school buses. Some migrated to what is now Bombay Beach and the abandoned Marine Training Base Camp Dunlap now known as Slab City.
3. Salvation Mountain:
A visionary environmentcovering a hill in the Colorado Desert, north ofCalipatria, northeast of Niland near Slab City, several miles from the Salton Sea. It is in Imperial County,California.
The artwork is made from adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint. Salvation Mountain was created by local resident Leonard Knight (1931–2014). It encompasses numerous murals and areas painted with Christian sayings and Bible verses, though its philosophy was built around the Sinner's Prayer.
The Folk Art Society of America declared it a folk art site worthy of preservation and protection in the year 2000. In an address to the United States Congress on May 15, 2002, California SenatorBarbara Boxer described it as a unique and visionary sculpture... a national treasure... profoundly strange and beautifully accessible, and worthy of the international acclaim it receives.
In December 2011, the 80-year-old Knight was placed in a long-term care facility in El Cajon for dementia. Leonard Knight died on February 10, 2014, in El Cajon.
Concern has been raised for the future of the site, which requires constant maintenance due to the harsh surrounding environment. Many visitors bring paint to donate to the project.

This is a short Video of night life at The Range a popular open air Night Club located at Slab City. Slab City, Niland, California is Off the Grid. Electrical Power is from solar panels and storage batteries. At the range the batteries are in an old trailer that also houses the audio equipment. Slab City is Free Living. There is no paid electricity, running water, sewer, trash pick up or other services. Living there is totally Free. The inhabitants are a mix Snow Birds, Aging Hippies, Bikers, Homeless People, Retired Teachers and even a few old retired Marines. Slab City is located on Camp Dunlap which is an abandoned WW2 Marine Corps Base. In the winter months the population is several thousand.

Love of Leonard Knight | salvation mountain | slab city
Leonard Knight was born on November 1, 1931 near Burlington, Vermont. He has described himself as being a spoiled and rebellious child (Sims 2004a). Knight has explained that he was something of a loner and that his schoolmates often made fun of him for having a stutter. These instances led to him dropping out in tenth grade. Once Knight dropped out of school he had to learn how to survive on his own. As he has looked back on his childhood, he recalled having dreamed about one day moving to California. He wanted a mountain in his childhood dream to come true (Metz 1998:5).
Leonard Knight was one of those men who was so singular of vision that from a distance some would brush it off as crazy. But it didn’t take much to realize what Leonard was. Just a conversation and you would know—this man was a saint, an American sadhu in the desert of southern California. The mountain was his living daily meditation.
In 1951, at age 20, Knight was drafted into the Army as the Korean War was winding down. Knight was looking forward to seeing the world as he traveled to Kentucky and then to Fort Knox. After he had completed an extended period of training, he was sent to Korea, but the war ended just ten days after he arrived. Upon returning home to Vermont, Knight supported himself by picking up odd jobs, such as painting cars and giving guitar lessons. Knight believed in starting at the bottom and moving up in order to learn, but he never experienced great career success (Metz 1998:7).
When Knight was 36, he experienced a spiritual awakening. One day while listening to his sister speak of Jesus, he felt troubled and left his sister’s company. He recalls that as he sat alone in his van his passion for God came suddenly. He began to recite the Sinner’s Prayer, “Jesus, I’m a sinner, please come upon my body and into my heart.” He states that “For twenty minutes I was just saying it over and over again, and it changed my life completely to the good.” This moment began his lifelong, unfaltering dedication to Jesus (Metz 1998:13).
Once Knight’s spiritual passion was unleashed, he went from church to church to share his enthusiasm. His message of “God is Love” was not kindly received. The churches believed that Knight’s ideas were too simple. He reflected on that period, “I really loved Jesus a lot and I wanted people to know but nobody’d listen to me” (Metz 1998:13).
Taking matters into his own hands, Knight’s developed a new idea; to spread his message via hot air balloon. It would be the perfect vehicle to allow the Sinner’s Prayer to reach a broad audience. For the next ten years, Knight prayed for a hot air balloon, but his prayers went unanswered. He headed West on a road trip in 1980, and his van broke down in Nebraska. He had planned on staying in Nebraska for a few days, but he ended up staying for five years. Knight remembers those ten years as being the longest of his life. He came to the realization that if he wanted a balloon he would need to make it himself. He bought fabric and started sewing the balloon together by hand. His goal was to build the largest hot air balloon in the world; it would bear the words “God is Love” in large red letters for all to see. The project became much more challenging than Knight imagined. As the balloon grew to an unmanageable size, it would not inflate properly. The material began to rot due to the intense Nebraska heat (Metz 1998:17-25).
Knight left Nebraska and headed for Southern California in 1984. He continued to try and launch his balloon but was unsuccessful. The balloon's immense size resulted in the balloon breaking into pieces. Knight finally gave up on his dream of a hot air balloon.
In one last attempt to promote his message, Knight began erecting a small monument in Niland, California, near Slab City. Armed with only a bucket, a shovel, and a bag of cement, Knight began to create what would become Salvation Mountain. As time went on, Knight added more cement, sand, and junk that he collected from the dump. After the cement and debris were added, Knight would then decorate the mountain with painted artwork. The mountain featured his famous “God Is Love” and Sinner’s Prayer messages.

Can Salvation Mountain Be Saved?
It took artist Leonard Knight almost 30 years to build a mountain out of adobe and paint in the middle of the Imperial Valley desert. It's called Salvation Mountain and it draws thousands of tourists to the area. KPBS arts reporter Angela Carone finds out why a monument to religious salvation, now needs its own savior.
