Bricklayer Chris Johnson developed acute silicosis after just a few months breathing silica dust on a housing repair job. His only respiratory protection was a paper mask. The U.S. government has failed to effectively regulate silica in workplaces for 40 years — exposing countless others to this lethal substance — and leaving Johnson, 40, with a life expectancy of five more years.
