Osorezan: Japan`s holy place to meet the dead
Osorezan (恐山). One of the three holiest and most spiritual places in Japan (日本三大霊場). The other two are Khoyasan (高野山)and Hieizan(比叡山).
There`s a temple lodging within the precinct and I stayed there one night in the summer 2014. There`s a casual-style Buddhist sermon in the evening and prayers ceremony early in the morning.
The place is outside the range of mobile phone service, no internet, no tv, no other amusement facilities. It is the place to make prayers for the dead, and even try to meet them if you`d like. Women called 'Itako' often come around, who are believed to be evocators, and you could ask them to raise the spirits of the dead to talk (you need to pay 3,000 yen, as of August 2014).
Cycling Northern Japan: Aomori 青森サイクリング
Although mostly an unknown part of Japan, Aomori Prefecture actually had all the ideal components of a great cycling destination. Long winding roads, mountainous terrain, a very long coastline, amazing views, little vehicular traffic, and mild weather make Aomori a fun and safe place to log in those kilometers. So pump your tires and start up Strava, because you're in for a long ride!
The Rockwood Hotel in Ajigasawa also offers fully supported and guided cycling tours in English to take care of every aspect of your journey. You can find more information at:

Chapter 6: The Port Town of Aomori
Aomori is a small port town in the Tohoku region. It is close to the sea, so this makes it a very good place to go shop for fresh fish and other goodies! The city is also known for its big apples called fuji. They create all kinds of products and derivatives from it like ciders and more.
First thing we do in the morning is go eat some fish at Furakawa Fish Market! It contains lots of packed rows of vendors selling local seafood freshly brought in from Aomori Port. Buy tickets to create your own donburi bowl (bowl with rice) with fish of your choice picked freshly from the market! The Augashinsen Fish Market is also next to Furukawa's. I go buy and eat a nice rice cake filled with red bean paste, mmmm!
After that we go to the Hakkodamaru Memorial Ship. It was a ship that connected Aomori with Hakodate, and transported many things like the famous apples. It is now retired because of the new railway system that got introduced later in Japan. The museum inside explains the lives of the people at the time while inside and outside of the ship. We get a nice view of the city from the deck of the ship! There is also a vehicle deck which holds several historical trains of the time.
Nebutta Warasse is a museum about the Nebuta Matsuri, which is a festival held on summer around the beginning of August. Obviously, being in September I could not attend the actual festival, but visiting this museam gives us a good idea of what it is! The floats were amazing and I got to assist a little show while I was there! It recreated the atmosphere of the festival that's for sure!
Sannai Maruyama Archeological Site is the largest and one of the most complete and best preserved Jomon Period (13000-300 BC) villages in Japan. It was very interesting to see the old buildings and learn more about this time period of Japan.
Finally, to end the day we went to the Aomori Museum of Arts. Great art pieces of Chagall's Aleko were displayed in the Aleko Hall. No videos could be taken and photos are just for personal use. I could get shots of the Aomori-Ken statue though, which is a giant dog statue by artist Nara.
Overall, this was a nice city to visit! Next stop: Hakodate. We're entering Hokkaido for real now!

Japanese Wet Market Tour: Yokohamabashi Shopping District Japan! Raw Footage!
Yokohamabashi Shopping District is a local shopping street that has been selling mainly daily commodities since before World War II. It is a vibrant shopping street with an atmosphere reminiscent of the old days, where face-to-face selling is still valued. A three minute walk from the Municipal Subway Bandobashi station, the 350 meter long arcade is lined with a variety of 135 stores all selling products at reasonable prices. Hand-made cutlets and croquettes are especially popular. The arcade is equipped for all weather conditions and free of vehicles from 13:00 to 20:00 everyday, providing a safe shopping environment.

Corregidor, Bataan Island Japan Monument #3
Part 3 of 5 of our road trip from Manila to Bataan September 2012. Sorry if the video is a bit jarry, I tried to walk slowly when I was capturing the moment.
Corregidor Island tour on our beautifully custom made open Tamaraw-style SUV. Sounded like it ran on diesel but it was gas-powered. Yuko, my girlfriend was happy to see the Buddha monument that the government of Japan donated to the island to also commemorate the memory many Japanese soldiers (many US and Filipinos died also of course!) whom died in the Philippines during WWII. Her family was from Hiroshima but she grew up in Minami-gyotoku. You notice the US guns and assets pointed out to the Pacific Ocean awaiting the imminent Japanese invasion.
This leg of our trip included monkey sightings, a description that Corregidor Island is shaped like a tadpole (many indigenous frogs in the island by the way, so impressively cute). We were informed that we were on the tail-end of the island.
You will notice the eerie serenity, you just hear the rustling of the wind against the camera's mic, the chirping of the birds; other than that, pure unadulterated silence. The marble-encased base of the Buddha was impressive. So from Seattle to Corregidor, Love & Peace! Please click on subsribe button. Thanks for watching!

Kabushima Hachinohe
This is Kabushima Island, designated a National Natural Monument as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls. Every year black-tailed gulls come here to raise their chicks from March until about August. The island is packed with birds, said to number between thirty and forty thousand.

Breeding Ground of the Black-tailed Gull
[Encyclopedia of Local Korean Culture] Breeding Ground of the Black-tailed Gull
Dokdo Island is the only region in the East Sea regions where breeding grounds for the large groups of black-tailed gull, swinhoe's storm petrels and streaked shearwater are located. The island has been designated Dokdo Protected Natural Area (Natural Monument No. 336) and preserved. Dokdo Island has a pleasant inhabiting environment for a stopover for migratory birds and group breeding grounds because there are almost no natural enemies, and it provides rich feeding grounds. Black-tailed gulls visit Dokdo Island from late April to early May each year to breed.

Oirase Stream Complete Guide and Towada Lake Highlights [Latest]
Oirase Stream Complete Guide and Towada Lake Highlights [Latest]
A lively and uplifting landscape
The Oirase Stream is a 14km mountain stream of the Oirase River that flows from Aomori Prefecture’s Lake Towada’s Nenokuchi to Mt. Yakeyama.
The stream officially belongs to the Towada Kohan-ko Noguchi National Park, and it is designated as a national monument of the country of Japan.
There are numerous waterfalls dotted along the stream and thus it is sometimes called the Waterfall Road.
There are over 27 scenic waterfalls to see, including the Choshi Otaki which blocks fish from swimming up the river, the Kumoi-no-Taki and the Asura-no-Nagare, and the Samidare-no-Nagare. The area is beautiful in all 4 seasons with beautiful green leaves in May-June and autumn colors in October.
Enjoyment tips and notes
Along the Oirase Stream, there is a path that leads from Yakeyama to Nenokuchi. The whole journey is about 14km and takes more than 4.5 hours. You need to have a lot of energy to complete this journey.
A shorter path from Ishigedo to Nenokuchi takes 3.5 hours.
You can enjoy a slow walk along this path while savoring the scenery.
The Oirase Stream is designated as a natural monument and there are numerous plants here which are in danger of extinction, and so in order to protect the national park, you should not destroy or take plants, and enjoy the natural surroundings without disturbing anything. Additionally, you should not venture outside of the roped-off areas along the road.
Access
Yakeyama or Ishigedo acts as the entrance to the Oirase Stream and to get there you can go to JR Shin-Aomori Station (新青森駅) or JR Hachinohe Station (八戸駅) and from either of these, you can take a bus bound for the Towada Kyu-ya (十和田湖休屋).
From Shin-Aomori Station it is about 120mins or from Hachinohe Station it is a 90-minute bus ride. If you are coming by car, it is about 70~90 minutes to get there so you should make sure you have plenty of time to spare to get there.
