Space Shuttle Endeavour final fly by at NASA Ames Moffett field Mountain View California.
The orbiter is named after the British HMS Endeavour, the ship which took Captain James Cook on his first voyage of discovery (1768--1771).[5] This is why the name is spelled in the British English manner, rather than the American English (Endeavor). This has caused confusion, most notably when NASA itself misspelled a sign on the launch pad in 2007.[6] The name also honored Endeavour, the Command Module of Apollo 15, itself also named after Cook's ship.
After more than twenty organizations submitted proposals to NASA for the display of an orbiter, NASA announced that Endeavour would go to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.[20][21][22]
After low level flyovers above NASA and civic landmarks across the country and in California, it was delivered to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on September 21, 2012.[23] The orbiter was slowly and carefully transported through the streets of Los Angeles and Inglewood three weeks later, from October 11--14 along La Tijera, Manchester, Crenshaw, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevards to her final destination at the California Science Center in Exposition Park.[24][25]
Endeavour encountered a few obstacles while transiting the streets narrowly missing telephone poles, apartment buildings and other structures. The lack of obstacles was due, in part, to the fact that over 400 old-growth shade trees had been cut down beforehand.[26] The power had to be turned off and power carrying poles had to be removed temporarily as the orbiter crept along Manchester to Prairie Avenue then Crenshaw Boulevard. News crews lined the streets along the path with visible news personalities in the news trucks. There were several police escorts as well as considerable security helping to control the large crowds gathered. Endeavour was parked for a few hours at the Great Western Forum where it was available for viewing.[27] The journey was famous for an unmodified Toyota Tundra pickup truck pulling the space shuttle across the Manchester Boulevard Bridge.[28] The space shuttle was mainly carried by four self-propelled robotic dollies throughout the 12 mile journey. However, due to bridge weight restrictions, the space shuttle was moved onto the dolly towed by the Tundra. After it had completely crossed the bridge, the Space Shuttle was returned to the robotic dollies. The footage was later used in a commercial for the 2013 Super Bowl.[29] Having taken longer than expected, Endeavour finally reached the Science Center on October 14.[30]
The exhibit was opened to the public on October 30, 2012 at the temporary Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Display Pavilion of the museum.[27] A new addition to the Science Center, called the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, is under construction as Endeavour's permanent home. Planned for a 2017 opening, the Endeavour will be mounted vertically with an external tank and a pair of solid rocket boosters in the shuttle stack configuration. One payload door will be open to reveal a demonstration payload inside.[27]
After its decommissioning, Endeavour's Canadarm (formally the 'Shuttle Remote Manipulator System') was removed in order to be sent to the Canadian Space Agency's John H. Chapman Space Centre in Longueuil, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal, where it was to be placed on display.[31] The Space Agency's Longueuil headquarters was an unlikely choice for the display of the Canadian-built robotic device. In a Canadian poll on which science or aerospace museum should be selected to display the Canadarm, originally built by SPAR Aerospace, the Canadian Space Agency's headquarters placed third to last with only 35 out of 638 votes.[32][33] Endeavour's Canadarm has since gone on permanent display at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.

Space Shuttle Endeavour Flyby September 2012
Increadable footage of the Space Shuttle Endeavour making it's last piggy back flight to it's final home in Los Angeles. The Space Shuttle Endeavour was the final shuttle built as part of the shuttle program. She made her first flight in May 1992, to deliver a satellite to space. Over the course of her career, she flew 25 missions in all, ending in May 2011. Endeavour spent 296 days, 3 hours, 34 minutes, 2 seconds in space.Today, the Space Shuttle Endeavour is on permanent exhibition at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California. The Endeavour is housed in a special building designed to be its permanent home, the Samuel Oschin Pavilion. As the California Science Center is a massive campus of exhibits focusing on a variety of science topics, the Endeavour is just one of the fascinating experiences you can have at this Los Angeles science museum. Eventually, there were six shuttles in all: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour, and Enterprise. Over the course of 30 years, the shuttles completed 135 missions, helping NASA deliver payloads to space, such as the Hubble Space Telescope, and build Skylab and the International Space Station. #davekentlive #davekent #sanfranciscobayarea

Endeavour has attracted record-breaking attendance since going on public display on October 30. Attention is now on the creation of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, the largest component of Phase III of the California Science Center's 25-year Master Plan and the shuttle's permanent home. With immersive experiences that transport guests beyond Earth's limits, hands-on exhibits that encourage active learning, and a unique collection of aircraft and spacecraft, the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will be a launch pad for creativity and innovation
David Knight will cover the journey of Endeavour from the start in Florida to her new home in downtown LA, along with special detail about the move. He will describe the extraordinary effort and access required to pull it off, and how the filming of the process became a major activity in itself. This spectacular series of events was experienced by millions of people throughout California, and in particular, during her track across the cityscape. Working closely with Jeff Rudolph who spearheaded the enormous project, Knight and company were able to chronicle the most complex and witnessed movement of an object through an urban area, in history.
Space Shuttle Endeavour Flies Over Hollywood
The shuttle flew over the downtown Los Angeles skyline, the Griffith Park Observatory and in front of the Hollywood sign.
The jumbo jet carrying Endeavour landed just before 1 p.m. on runway 25 at LAX, with a crew member hoisting an American flag out of the cockpit roof.
Southern California residents on Friday welcomed the space shuttle Endeavour as it flew over the Santa Monica Pier and other LA landmarks before landing at LAX on its final leg of a historic tour of California.
The shuttle took a circuitous route from Edwards Air Force Base to LAX, giving Californians their last chance to see the orbiter before it becomes a museum piece at the California Science Center in Exposition Park next month.
The shuttle will stay at Los Angeles International Airport until Oct. 12, when it's slated to begin its two-day overland journey to its new home at the California Science Center.
Endeavour will go on display Oct. 30 in the Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Display Pavilion.

It's one thing to say I've been to Europe, France or Egypt, but it's another to say I've traveled to space. NASA built arguably the most sophisticated aerial vehicle in history that didn't just include advanced cutting-edge technology, but the combination of intelligence from scientists and engineers. The moon landing, the Apollo missions, to the launching of satellites into space are absolutely gargantuan in scope and are just the beginning of NASA's climb up the ladder of science.

On October 30, 2012, Space Shuttle Endeavour opened to the public in the Science Center’s newly built Samuel Oschin Pavilion. In the Pavilion, guests are able to see Endeavour up close and discover some of the science behind this amazing space vehicle. The Samuel Oschin Pavilion also features SPACEHAB, a workshop for astronauts while in space, and a space shuttle main engine (SSME) which helped push the shuttle into orbit. Before entering the Pavilion, guests will be able to enjoy an introductory experience, Endeavour Together: Parts & People, which celebrates Endeavour, the space shuttle program, and the people who helped make the program possible. The exhibit also highlights the shuttle program's strong connection to California, where all the orbiters were built. Endeavour Together includes the Rocketdyne Operations Support Center (ROSC), which monitored the first 81/2 minutes of every shuttle launch, Endeavour’s space potty and galley, the nose cone from a space shuttle external tank, and the tires from STS-134, Endeavour’s final mission. In addition to the orbiter, our unique collection of Air and Space Exhibits explores the design of aircraft, spacecraft, and space probes for specific tasks by applying the principles of air, space, and flight.
The Science Center also hosts international touring exhibits and has an educationally focused IMAX Theater with a capacity to create images of exceptional clarity and impact through the use of the largest film frame in the motion picture industry. The 7-story screen brings to life worlds as small as an atom and as vast as the universe.
