Propane Autogas Fleet Testimonial: Metropolitan Transit System San Diego
Learn more about propane autogas for fleets:
Subscribe to our YouTube channel to see more videos about propane autogas fleets.
System wide, San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System transports about 320,000 people every day. Because they’re powered by tax payer money, MTS officials are diligent about making smart investments for their fleet. Bill Spraul, COO, reports the propane autogas vehicles perform almost exactly like their other technology. As an additional bonus, Spraul reports the ease of maintenance is improved with propane autogas, and propane systems blend seamlessly into their maintenance setup. Reducing emissions was a key driver for San Diego MTS to consider propane autogas vehicles, producing “the results we want, at a cost-savings,” says Paul Jablonski, CEO. Because of California’s stringent air quality goals, MTS presented propane autogas as a solution to reduce emissions while lower total cost-of-ownership. These unique benefits impressed the board and the decision to incorporate propane autogas was quick. Soon MTS will have over 70 propane autogas buses, which will also improve the organization’s bottom line even more.

San Diego Metropolitan Transit System’s Light Rail - A Video Study
San Diego Metropolitan Transit System’s Light Rail - A Video Study
It was a chilly spring evening in San Diego back in 2008. I was at the Civic Center Metro station stop snapping photos, when a security officer approached me and asked:
“Are you a terrorist?”
Because I was tired, cold, cranky, and pissed he would even ask such a stupid question, I replied:
“What do you want me to blow up?”
“You gonna blow up the Metro?” he asked, somewhat seriously.
“No man, I love the Metro!” I replied, and went on to explain that I was an art student from Los Angeles with a strong and unexplained fascination with the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System’s Light Rail. I had spent the last two days riding the metro, stopping at every station, taking photos for a class project. I’m sure I may have looked suspicious with my camera, backpack, baseball cap and obvious brown skin, since this particular security guy was only one in a long line of officers who questioned my activities at the stations.
The guard laughed, I took some photos of him, and we went our separate ways.
My fascination with the San Diego Metro continues to this day, and I always end up riding it whenever I visit the city. I still don’t know why SD’s Light Rail is so alluring– LA’s Metro system doesn’t even register for me.
After New Year’s 2016 I found myself alone in San Diego after celebrating the holiday with my family. Predictably I spent the entire day on the Metro - this time shooting video.
Luckily, no accusations of being a terrorist. 'Till next time San Diego!
