About Downtown San Diego:
Downtown San Diego, also referred to as Centre City, is the city center of San Diego, California, the eighth largest city in the United States. In 2010, the Centre City area itself had a population of more than 28,000. Downtown San Diego serves as the cultural and financial center and central business district of San Diego, with more than 4,000 businesses and nine districts. The downtown area is the home of the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Opera as well as multiple theaters and several museums.[1] [2] The San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, are also located downtown. Downtown San Diego houses the major local headquarters of the city, county, state, and federal governments.

Core District, the central business district of downtown.
Cortez Hill, the north-east district of downtown.
East Village, the east district of downtown, which is home to Petco Park and the surrounding Ballpark Village.
Gaslamp Quarter, a two by ten block night life district in central Downtown
Little Italy, the north-west district of downtown.
Marina, the south-west district of downtown, which is home to Seaport Village and Pantoja Park.

Due to San Diego International Airport's (Lindbergh Field) proximity to downtown, there is a FAA imposed 500-foot height restriction on all buildings within a 1.5 mile radius of the runway.[16] The height regulation exists because when planes approach the airport, any structure taller than 500 ft. within the radius could interfere with flight operations and potentially result in a collision.[17]

2011 Texas All-State Symphony Orchestra Video 1
Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz Part 1
conducted by Guillermo Figueroa
I. Reveries, Passions
Recorded live in concert by Mark Records at the
Texas Music Educators Assn. Conference
San Antonio, Texas February 2011
The selection process for Texas All-State Orchestras differs for string and wind auditions. String students audition at the regional level (28 regions) to earn the right to submit a recorded audition for the statewide competition. There is a limit to how many students may record at the regional level for each string instrument. During the second weekend in November, panels are assembled in one large metropolitan area of the state to judge the recordings and to select the students. The top players are assigned to the Symphony Orchestra, the next group to the Philharmonic Orchestra and the final group to the String Orchestra. The evening before the conference, students audition for seating within their respective orchestra. Wind and percussion players are selected from a pool that also determines members of the All-State Bands. These are all live auditions, starting first at the regional level (28 regions), then moving to the area regions (7 areas). The top scoring wind and percussion players in each area are selected for All-State and are auditioned for seating the day before the state conference. The highest ranked wind and percussion players are allowed to choose the ensemble in which they wish to participate. The Texas All-State selection process involves approximately 60,000 students who audition for band, orchestra and choir. About 1.8 percent ultimately are accepted.

Figueroa has collaborated with many leading artists, including Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Hilary Hahn, Placido Domingo, Joshua Bell, Olga Kern, Janos Starker, James Galway, Midori, the Emerson String Quartet, Pepe Romero, and Elmar Oliveira. A renowned violinist, he was Concertmaster of the New York City Ballet and is a Founding Member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Figueroa has given the world premieres of four violin concertos written for him: Concertino for Violin and Orchestra by Mario Davidovsky, at Carnegie Hall with Orpheus; Double Concerto by Harold Farberman, with the American Symphony at Lincoln Center; Violin Concerto by Miguel del Aguila with the New Mexico Symphony; and Insula, Suite Concertante for Violin and Strings, by Ernesto Cordero with the Solisti di Zagreb. He appears regularly at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Music in the Vineyards in California, and Music from Angel Fire.

The San Diego Concert Band: Overture to Candide (Bernstein)
This was recorded on April 7, 2015 at the Salvation Army's Ray and Joan Kroc Theater in San Diego, CA, for bands 2015 spring concert entitled Springtime Classics.
Candide was originally conceived by Lillian Hellman as a play with incidental music in the style of her previous work, The Lark. Bernstein, however, was so excited about this idea that he convinced Hellman to do it as a comic operetta; she then wrote the original libretto for the operetta.
Originally produced in 1956, “Candide” was run with mixed reviews and closed after less than one year. In the 1970’s Candide was revived again in Los Angeles and then faded. In the 1980’s it was revised and reworked in New York by Beverly Sills and supervised by Leonard Bernstein. The production never quite found its musical footing until it was finally was remounted again in the early nineties.
Although unsuccessful at its premiere, Candide has now overcome the unenthusiastic reaction of early audiences and critics and achieved enormous popularity. It is very popular among major music schools as a student show because of the quality of its music and the opportunities it offers to student singers.
“Overture to Candide” is considered an orchestral and concert band classic in the catalog of instrumental music.
The San Diego Concert Band is a non-profit organization and all volunteer band of musicians from the around the San Diego Community. More information and a listing of their concert schedules can be located at their website: sandiegoconcertband.com
The conductor is Roy S. Anthony Jr, a nationally acclaimed and renowned musical educator and conductor. Mr. Anthony is a highly sought after band and orchestra clinician.
Recently in October 2014 he received the Retired Music Educator of the year award from CMEA-Southern Border Section and received the Retired Music Educator of the year award for the state at the CMEA State Conference at their February 2015 gathering in Fresno, CA.

International Youth Symphony 2015 - San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory
The annual International Youth Symphony is a partnership between SDYS and Rotary District 5340 International Youth Exchange that brings musicians from across the globe together with SDYS' most advanced musicians for a two-week intensive music experience.
In July 2015, we celebrated the 11th annual International Youth Symphony. Over thirteen international musicians joined eighteen SDYS students to create a unique orchestra, comprised of exceptionally talented student musicians led by SDYS Music Director Jeff Edmons for two weeks of rehearsals and a variety of recitals and concerts in the community.
This year's performances included an outdoor concert as part of the Twilight in the Park in Spreckels Organ Pavilionand a Classical Concert at the Center Theater at California Center for the Arts in Escondido.

About San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory
The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS) is the 6th oldest continuously operating youth symphony in the United States, and serves over 600 students annually in ten ensembles from its home in Balboa Park. Skill levels range from beginner to pre-professional, with participating students ages 8 to 25.
In addition to its Balboa Park programs, SDYS launched the Community Opus Project in 2010 as a strategy to demonstrate the many benefits of music education, build support for music in the community, and convince school districts to provide music as part of students' regular curriculum. It was so successful that within only three years, the Chula Vista Elementary School District committed to providing music education to all of its students and with the assistance of SDYS will begin phasing in school day music in the upcoming school year.
SDYS was the 2012 Grand Prize Winner of the BoardSource/Prudential Leadership Awards for Exceptional Nonprofit Boards.
