San Diego Zoo Safari Park - Wild Animal Park | California Travel Tips
Veronica Hill tours San Diego Wild Animal Park — recently renamed the San Diego Zoo Safari Park — in this episode of California Travel Tips.
The San Diego attraction, which is a sister property of the San Diego Zoo, offers dozens of fun tours through the park, from Segway and mule rides to overnight Roar and Snore safaris. It's also home to the Flightline Wild Animal park zip line tour, which is the longest in the Continental United States. One of the most popular San Diego attractions, the zip line tours are an added fee (in addition to park admission).
This expansive 2,200-acre wild animal park is home to hundreds of wild animals in a natural Savannah setting. Rather than keep animals in tight enclosures like the San Diego Zoo, the park allows many of them to roam large open spaces. That said, it's clear you're going to do plenty of walking, so be sure to wear a comfortable pair of shoes. The Kilimanjaro Safari Walk, with its 2 miles of steep hilly trails, offers glimpses of lions, elephants and other wildlife. In addition to the Africa Tram Safari that's included with your ticket, you can take part in dozens of adventures like Photo Caravan Jeep Tours, where you can hand-feed roaming giraffes and rhinos. The park's Flightline is the longest zip line in the continental United States. For a unique overnight adventure, don't miss the park's Roar and Snore safari in a luxury tent. It comes complete with dinner, s'mores and a pancake breakfast!
Tips: During the summer, the animals are most active in early morning and sunset.

CONSERVATION
The Safari Park was a major factor in the recovery of the California condor. Beginning in 1980, it worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Los Angeles Zoo to start a captive breeding program. The last 22 condors were taken into captivity in 1987 To breed the condors quickly, the Safari Park would remove the eggs from the nests to induce the females to lay a second egg. The removed egg hatches in an incubator and is raised with a condor handpuppet to prevent human imprinting, while the second egg is raised by its parents. Captive-bred condors were reintroduced into the wild beginning in 1992, and today their population is 369, with 191 in the wild as of March 2011. On December 14, 2014, Angalifu, a 44-year-old male northern white rhinoceros, died at the park. This left only five northern white rhinos left in the world, including one female at the Safari Park. On November 22,2015, the park's last Northern White Rhino, Nola was euthanized due to bacterial infection and her health rapidly declining.
