May 30 - Saint Ferdinand III - King of Castile - 1252 - Seville Spain
Ferdinand III 1199/1201 – 30 May 1252, called the Saint (el Santo), was King of Castile from 1217 and King of León from 1230 as well as King of Galicia from 1231. He was the son of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile. Through his second marriage he was also Count of Aumale. Ferdinand III was one of the most successful kings of Castile, securing not only the permanent union of the crowns of Castile and León, but also masterminding the most expansive campaign of Reconquista yet.
By military and diplomatic efforts, Ferdinand greatly expanded the dominions of Castile into southern Spain, annexing many of the great old cities of al-Andalus, including the old Andalusian capitals of Córdoba and Seville, and establishing the boundaries of the Castilian state for the next two centuries.
Ferdinand was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X and, in Spanish, he is known as Fernando el Santo, San Fernando or San Fernando Rey. Places such as San Fernando, Pampanga, San Fernando, La Union, Patron Saint of the Diocese of Ilagan,Province of Isabela - San Fernando de Ilagan and the San Fernando de Dilao Church in Paco, Manila in the Philippines, and in California, San Fernando City and the San Fernando Valley, were named for him and placed under his patronage.

Around the tomb of Christopher Columbus - Seville Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, better known as Seville Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Seville. It was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is the third-largest church in the world as well as the largest Gothic church.
The Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf ordered the construction of a new grand mosque for the city in 1172 on the south end of the city. The mosque was designed by the renowned architect Ahmad ben Basso as a 113 x 135 m rectangular building with a surface of over 15,000 m², including a minaret and ablutions courtyard. Its prayer hall consisted of seventeen aisles oriented southward, perpendicular to its Qibla wall.
Shortly after Seville's conquest by Ferdinand III, Yaqub Yusuf's mosque was converted into the city's cathedral. Its orientation was changed and its spaces partitioned and adorned to suit Christian worship practices.
Seville Cathedral was built to demonstrate the city's wealth, as it had become a major trading center in the years after the Reconquista in 1248. In July 1401, city leaders decided to build a new cathedral to replace the grand mosque that served as the cathedral until then. Construction continued until 1506. The clergy of the parish offered half their stipends to pay for architects, artists, stained glass artisans, masons, carvers, craftsman and labourers and other expenses.

STORYLINE:
An imam recited verses from the Quran on Thursday as the former seat of Moorish rule in Spain unveiled its first mosque in more than 500 years.
Dignitaries from Arab and Muslim countries as far away as Malaysia watched reverently as the Great Mosque of Granada opened for prayer, crowning a fitful and emotionally charged project that began in 1981.
The hilltop mosque commands one of Spain's most historic sites: the Alhambra, the reddish 14th-century palace and citadel from which Moorish caliphs governed in scented splendour until King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled them in 1492, ending 800 years of Muslim rule in southern Spain.
These days Granada has a Muslim population of about 15,000, one of Spain's largest. But until now its half-dozen mosques worked out of temporary venues such as apartments, shops or garages.
The new euro 4 million (US$ 4.5 million) building is the first mosque designed as such to open in Granada since the last Moorish king, Boabdil, rode into exile 511 years ago. His humiliation ended a dynasty which had overseen a culture brimming with art, poetry, music and architecture.
From a mountain vantage point Boabdil is said to have looked back on the Alhambra one last time, the morning sun shining brightly on its towers and embattlements, and wept. When did misfortune ever equal mine? he wailed
from a spot now known as The Pass of the Moor's Sigh.
Jubilation, however, replaced woe on Thursday.
The mosque is a discreet, white brick building with a red tile roof and thick, square minaret, all nudged between a convent of cloistered nuns and a Catholic church.
Spain's Muslims say that after decades of keeping their faith quiet in a predominantly Catholic country, they are growing in both numbers and transparency.
A government census puts the figure at about 500,000 out of a population of 40 (m) million. An estimated 10,000 are non-immigrant Spaniards who converted to Islam.
The plot on which the mosque now stands in the picturesque Albaicin, the old Moorish quarter of Granada, was purchased with Libyan money in 1981.
Ground was finally broken in 1998. About half the construction cost has been financed by the United Arab Emirates.

La Giralda - a bell tower for the Cathedral of Seville
The Giralda tower originally was a minaret, part of the Moorish mosque and was also used as an astronomical observatory. It's construction started in 1184 and lasted for 12 years. In 1248 the minaret was considered a marvel even to Fernando III, who demanded its protection prior to his conquering the city.

Spain - Seville Cathedral with Giralda Tower and tomb of Christopher Columbus
Seville, population of 700,000 and the fourth largest city of Spain, is the artistic, cultural and financial capital of southern Spain. The Roman name for the city was Hispalis before being renamed Seville by the Arabs when they took it over in 712AD. Seville was the capital of Al Andalus (Andalusia) until 1248 when King Fernando III of Castille won victory. Seville with its numerous Moorish structures and elements is part of UNESCO World Heritage site.
The video clip is of Seville Cathedral, formerly a mosque built in the late 12th century with its minerat converted to La Giralda Bell tower and topped with a bronze weathervane portraying faith. Work ot the cathedral, the largest in Europe began in 1401 and took a century to complete. Seville has the port on the river Guadalquivir where Christopher Columbus started his expedition and goods from the New World were distributed from here bringing wealth to the Seville. The Great Plague of 1649 reduced the population by half and the city did not recover until the early 19th century. The tomb of Christopher Columbus is in this cathedral topped with statues with his coffin carried by bearers representing the kingdoms of Castile, Leon, Aragon and Navarra. In the video clip, the weighty statue of the Virgin Mary is brought down from a stand to be put in a carriage for a religious procession.

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Sevilla is the flamboyant city of Carmen and Don Juan, where bullfighting is still politically correct and little girls dream of growing up to become flamenco dancers. Sevilla has soul — and we feel it in its lacy Moorish palace, massive cathedral, lavish royal tombs, labyrinthine Jewish quarter, and its people-filled streets.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, better known as Seville Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Seville. It was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, along with the adjoining Alcázar palace complex and the General Archive of the Indies. See refers to the episcopal see, i.e., the bishop's ecclesiastical jurisdiction. It is the third-largest church in the world as well as the largest Gothic church. After its completion in the early 16th century, Seville Cathedral supplanted Hagia Sophia as the largest cathedral in the world, a title the Byzantine church had held for nearly a thousand years. The total area occupied by the building is 23,500 square meters. The Gothic section alone has a length of 126 meters, a width of 83 meters and its maximum height in the center of the transept is 37 meters. The total height of the Giralda tower from the ground to the weather vane is 96 meters. Since the world's two largest churches are not the seats of bishops, Seville Cathedral is still the largest cathedral in the world. Seville Cathedral was the site of the baptism of Infant Juan of Aragon in 1478, only son of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. Its royal chapel holds the remains of the city's conqueror Ferdinand III of Castile, his son and heir Alfonso the Wise and their descendant king Pedro el Cruel. The funerary monuments for cardinals Juan de Cervantes and Pedro González de Mendoza Quiñones are located among its chapels. Christopher Columbus and his son Diego are also buried in the cathedral. The Archbishop's Palace is located on the northeastern side of the cathedral.
