San Francisco Bay Area (California) - In Another Minute (Week 233)
- - The San Francisco Bay Area (or simply, Bay Area) in California consists of the cities San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. And I love it! It's what I suspected ever since I saw my dad's photos from 1977 when he and his friend Manfred reached San Francisco on their road trip along Route 66 from New York City. Over the years, more and more of my friends from Florida and Brooklyn had moved there and I'd been dreaming about visiting or even moving to the Bay Area myself. This week, I finally got to go... and yes, I'd move there in a heartbeat.
During my to-short visit, I got to enjoy incredible hospitality, outstanding food and drinks, inspiring conversations, and so many stunning and anticipated sights.
Most of the places in this video, my dear friend Katie Ainslie and I got to experience thanks to Josh Mitchell, who was the Best Man in the previous week's wedding and video: Catskills Wedding (New York) - In Another Minute (Week 232):
Being on a serious mission to see as much of San Francisco in a single day as humanly possible (on hardly any sleep because of the previous Berkeley/Oakland night that started at Revival Kitchen...), he took us all over town by various modes of transportation - just to dip in here and there and get some shots. A champagne toast on Tony and Rochelle's balcony overlooking the city with the Golden Gate Bridge during golden hour was a definite highlight... and the dinner at Nopalito with more friends, Mezcal + bug powder was well deserved after that day. As desert, Kevin surprised me with making another dream come true: driving us across the Golden Gate Bridge!
Places in the video: Oakland home and BART station, view of San Francisco from Tank Hill (just below Twin Peaks), cable cars along California (the Powell cars weren't running), Blue Angels over the Marina (it was Fleet Week), Union Square, Grace Cathedral in Nob Hill, the Castro, street art in the Mission, a peaceful burger place in Haight-Ashbury, the Painted Ladies and sunset sky in Alamo Square... and finally the drive across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Thank you, Josh, you are a rock star! Thank you, Katie and Kevin, for the icing on top (including taking me to Brown Sugar Kitchen on my last day for my very first Chicken + Waffles)!
Another huge thank you goes to Katie, Sonia and Aaron who were amazing hosts and made me feel immediately at home. Beware, I might come back soon...
Last, but not least, a heartfelt thank you to everyone, who met me along the way and made this one of the most wonderful and memorable weekends. I'm so grateful to have all of you in my life!
While in California, I also had an amazing day with old and new friends exploring all that Sonoma has to offer. But that will be another video for another week...

Oh, and I don't know the guy making the silly face to the camera. But if you do that to me, you will be published.

San Francisco (California) : part 01

San Francisco plans how to combat future flooding

12. Screen capture showing USGS study of flooding using Google Earth: Blue, yellow and red areas show sea level rise relative to sea level in 2000.
13. SOUNDBITE (English) Matthew Heberger, Research Associate, The Pacific Institute:
Well what we think what you are going to see is increased flooding, particularly during these rare events. We often talk about the 100 year flood, which has a 1 percent chance of occurring in any given year. And so people who weren't in the floodplain in the past are going to see increased flooding and people who were previously not exposed to risk are going to find themselves suddenly at risk. We have 1000 miles (1600 kilometres) of coast along the Pacific in California, another 1000 miles (1600 kilometres) around San Francisco Bay, and particularly here in the bay is where some of the impacts are the most pronounced.

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Matthew Heberger, Research Associate, The Pacific Institute:
So when you are thinking about a structure with a 30 or a 50 year life span, you know that in 30 years from now or 50 years from now it needs to be able to withstand higher wave heights, potential for flooding, things like that. And cities and counties that are responsible for land use planning along the coast are really being directed by the state and by the courts to take sea level rise and the potential for future flooding into account as they are developing city plans, general plans, land use planning, zoning all of these things. So it's becoming much more mainstream amongst planners, architects and engineers in California.

27. SOUNDBITE (English) Dan Hodapp, Urban Designer for the Port of San Francisco:
There are a number of studies being done around the bay that are looking at sea level rise being led by the Bay Conservation Development Commission, who is working with other regional agencies to look at the inundation that will occur in a rise in sea level. We have been looking at those studies and we've commissioned our own study to look at what it's going to look like on the waterfront at 2050 and 2100. So we're relying on that information and trying to plan for that as we go forward.

Oakland Celebrates Warriors' NBA Crown
(15 Jun 2017) They are called the Golden State Warriors, but they don't belong to all of California. Not if you ask Oakland.
The down-on-its-luck city that always seems to take a back seat to San Francisco will get a rare chance to sit back and celebrate itself Thursday in a parade and rally for the hometown Golden State Warriors and their second NBA championship in three years.
They have a lot to cheer for. The Warriors went 15-1 in the postseason, with sweeps in the first three rounds before beating LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games in the NBA Finals.
And it came a year after the team blew a 3-1 lead against those same Cavaliers despite the best regular season in NBA history.
Residents of Oakland, which recently learned it's losing one of its other beloved teams, the Raiders, to Las Vegas, are still reeling from a police scandal and mourning a deadly warehouse fire. The Warriors are also headed to San Francisco, where they broke ground this year on a new arena slated to open in 2019.
But Thursday the city is making headlines for good news.
They're celebrating Curry, Klay Thompson, coach Steve Kerr, and Finals MVP Kevin Durant, who unlike the others, enjoyed his first championship parade.
The parade through downtown Oakland followed the same route as the one celebrating the 2015 NBA title.
Fans have spent the week snapping up championship shirts and hats as crews hung gold and blue banners along the parade route.

Charles J. Miller Bridge Construction Time Lapse Video
The Charles J. Miller Road Bridge was first built in 1988 by the McHenry County Division of Transportation. To provide for current and future traffic demand along Miller Road, a second bridge was proposed. The new bridge, built north of the current bridge, was completed in 2013. Taking one year to complete, watch its construction from start to finish in 2.5 minutes.
