Ranchos Presbyterian Church (Ranchos de Taos, NM) YouthMission Trip
Ranchos Presbyterian Church in Ranchos de Taos sponsored a Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Trip to Hammond, Louisiana. This area of Louisiana had record-setting flooding in mid-August 2016 and thousands of homes were suddenly unlivable. Darryl and Julie Bouchard led the group of three college-aged young adults from the Taos area (Valerie Pacheco, Shawn Kauffman, and Regan Lujan). The group removed damaged flooring and primed and painted walls and ceilings. It is amazing how the spirit of God is with you when you set out to do his work.

Albert Gonzalez - THE 1847 REVOLT: THE BEGINNING OF MODERN TAOS
Albert Gonzalez has carried out archaeological, historical, and ethnographic work among Hispanos in the Taos Valley since 2006. Dr. Gonzalez earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the University of Texas at Dallas, his 2007 master’s thesis describing life at the Plaza of San Francisco de Asis in Ranchos de Taos during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries based on historical and archaeological data. He earned his PhD in anthropological archaeology at Southern Methodist University in 2015. His dissertation explores the connection between whiskeymaking, labor, and rebellion at Turley’s Mill and Distillery, a Mexican-era operation destroyed during the 1847 Taos Rebellion. Dr. Gonzalez’s work in Taos has more recently inspired him to examine the archaeology and material culture of Latinos in the United States more generally. He is currently working to draw together a multidisciplinary group of scholars in conversation over the commonalities and differences in the historical experiences of Latinos across the country, past and present, paying special attention to the material manifestations of those experiences. He serves currently as Assistant Professor at California State University – East Bay, in Hayward, California.

Historic Churches of Northern New Mexico
Spanish colonists arrived in New Mexico in the late 1500s. Franciscan Friars accompanied the settlers and bought their faith with them. The priests built parishes throughout the southwest, some are over 400 years old.

Taos: Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish
Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish or Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe is located just west of the Taos Plaza at 205 Don Fernando Street in downtown Taos.
Having received permission from Durango, Mexico's Bishop Olivares built the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church in Taos as a Franciscan mission of San Geronimo Parish at the Taos Pueblo beginning on November 18, 1801. It was completed in 1802 and had adobe walls 3 to 4 feet thick and a flat roof. Fray José Benito Pereyro, OFM, served the church.
Padre Antonio José Martínez served the parish church beginning in August 1826. He was the first non-Franciscan priest. In 1833 it was commonly known as the Padre Martinez church and became a parish church under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe by Bishop Zubiria of Durango. It was the first Our Lady of Guadalupe churches in what is now the United States. San Francisco de Asis Mission Church in Ranchos de Taos and San Geronimo Church at Taos Pueblo then became mission churches of the parish.
Martinez served the parish until 1857. About 1911, the parish building was considered to be irreparable and was demolished. A new church was built on the same site by Jean Baptiste Pitaval, Archbishop of Santa Fe. It was organized by Father Joseph Giraud and was completed within the year. The parish was destroyed in an accidental fire on July 24, 1961.
A new church was built adjacent to the site of the former churches of southwestern adobe architecture with curved lines. It was dedicated December 1961 or on December 16, 1962 by Archbishop Edwin Byrne. Monsignor Charewicz was the parish priest until 1967. Father Robert Beach served the parish after Byrne.
Hung within each of the three churches has been a painting by Jose Santiago made in 1674 of Our Lady of Guadalupe that had been given to Padres Martinez as a gift.
In 2008 Our Lady of Guadalupe regained ownership of La Morada de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, a center of New Mexico Penitente Brotherhood, which was built on Taos Pueblo land.
Here I am Lord with fading.wmv
Recently our group of former Jesuit Volunteers gathered together in Santa Fe. We ended up visiting a lot of old missions. If you look at the history of New Mexico, you look at the history of the Church in New Mexico. We went to Mass at St Francis d'Asis in Ranchos de Taos. It is a beautiful old church, made famous by one of Georgia O'Keefe's paintings. The Mass began with a song which we, as a group, last sang together at St Mary's Mission where we met so many years ago...
