Half Moon Bay Review - Half Moon Bay, California
Who We Are:
The Half Moon Bay Review is an award-winning community newspaper serving the San Mateo County Coastside since 1898. Though a weekly newspaper for more than 100 years, the Review's web site now serves the Coastside community with breaking news as it occurs. The Review is proud to employ a staff of trained journalists who cover local politics, local sports, local environmental issues and local features. The news, columns and opinions on every page, cover-to-cover, focus solely on the Coastside — from Devil's Slide to the San Mateo County line. A paid subscription newspaper, the Review publishes every Wednesday morning and is circulated by mail, counter and rack sales.
In 1988, the Half Moon Bay Review was sold to brothers Walter and Robert Wick. Wick Communications a family-owned community news company with 28 newspapers and 18 specialty publications in 12 states.
The Coastside:
The Coastside includes the city of Half Moon Bay along with towns to the north: El Granada, Moss Beach and Montara — and those to the south: San Gregorio, La Honda and Pescadero. The Coastside is just over the hill from the city of San Mateo, and about 28 miles south of San Francisco along the San Mateo County coastline. The leading industry on the Coastside is floriculture, and the area is also home to Pillar Point Harbor, the only working harbor between San Francisco and Santa Cruz.
In the center of it all is Half Moon Bay. The city is home to a diverse population that includes Silicon Valley engineers, longtime farming families and recent immigrants. Its restaurants and shops are among the most celebrated in the county. And nearby beaches add serenity and unparalleled beauty to the landscape. There are miles of open-space trails curving through the city — all of them providing a unique perspective on the California coast. There are a number of signature events on the coast. The granddaddy of them all is October's Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival, which annually draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city's Main Street.
Kilili Presides Over Committee of the Whole
Rep. Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan presided over the Committee of the Whole in the U.S. House of Representatives during consideration of amendments for H.R. 268 - the Disaster Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2019 - on Wednesday, January 16, 2019.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan is the first and only person to represent the people of the Northern Mariana Islands in the U.S. House of Representatives. He began service on January 6, 2009 and has been reelected to office five times.
In the 116th Congress the Congressman became Chair of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education of the House Committee on Education and Labor and is a Member of the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment. He also serves as Vice Chair for Insular Affairs on the House Committee on Natural Resources with leadership responsibility for all insular area issues and is a Member on its Water, Oceans, and Wildlife Subcommittee. As the lone representative of the Marianas in Congress, Sablan has also been granted a waiver from the Democratic Caucus Leadership for membership on a third committee. Because of the large number of veterans in the Marianas and the need to improve services to them, Congressman Sablan selected the House Veterans' Affairs Committee. He serves on the Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs Subcommittee.
During his six terms in office Congressman Sablan has been responsible for legislation increasing funding to Northern Mariana Islands schools and individual students, to the Commonwealth Healthcare Center, and for water and sewer projects in his district. He expanded federal food and energy assistance for low-income families in his district. And his legislative work resulted in the return of ownership of submerged lands around the Northern Marianas to the people he represents. Congressman Sablan has also taken an active hand in easing the transition from local to federal management of immigration in the Northern Marianas through assistance to individuals, working closely with the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security and Labor on implementing policy, and by enacting into law extensions of a number of transitional policies.
Kilili was born on the island of Saipan on January 19, 1955. He is one of seven children from a large extended family with Chamorro and Hispanic roots.
At the age of 11 Kilili moved to the island of Chuuk to attend the Jesuit Xavier High School, then the only high school in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Being the sole Chamorro student, Kilili learned how to adapt to new environments and institutions and to find common ground with people from different cultures and backgrounds—skills which have served him well as a Member of Congress.
Kilili graduated from Marianas High School on Saipan, then attended the University of Guam before continuing college in Berkeley, California. A family crisis brought him home before his studies were complete, but it was during his college days that Kilili decided to go into public office.
He began service in the administration of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands’ first Governor, Carlos S. Camacho, and then was elected to the 3rd Northern Mariana Islands Legislature in 1981. Kilili was appointed to be a special representative to negotiations with the federal government on continuance of the financial assistance to the islands that had begun with Section 702 of the Covenant of Political Union between the Northern Mariana Islands and the United States. Kilili and his colleagues won a seven-year, full faith and credit commitment from the U.S. for $228 million. This allowed the Commonwealth to secure immediate, “front-end” funding for much-needed capital improvement projects.
After two terms in the Legislature, Kilili was selected to be a Special Assistant in Washington, DC to United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawai’i, then served in the administrations of Commonwealth Governors Froilan C. Tenorio and Pedro P. Tenorio, before being appointed as Executive Director of the Commonwealth Election Commission.
Kilili served in the Army Reserves from 1981 to 1986.
He is married to Andrea Sablan, and has six children and five grandchildren.
Greater San Jose (1951)
This film was produced for the San Jose Chamber of Commerce in the early 1950s as a promotional tool. San Jose was the focal point of the Santa Clara Valley, and it's all here in its heyday. Follow two beauties from place to place as they show off the glamor of San Jose! New suburban homes were rising, including Cambrian Park, and San Jose's old City Hall was still standing. Valley landmarks such as Santa Clara University and San Jose State College are featured, as are businesses like O'Brien's Candies, Bettencourt's Market, the Farmers' Union, and Normandin's Plymouth De Soto. Film made by Raycliff Pictures.
If you have old films of San Jose or the Bay Area, the Pioneers Film Archive wants to hear from you! We offer a free DVD copy if you allow us to preserve and share your historical films and photographs. The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County are a non-profit historical organization who aims to preserve & promote history and encourage research & scholarship. Visit us at CaliforniaPioneers.com and feel free to email us at SCCPioneers@Gmail.com

Plein Air Painting 1
The terms California Impressionism and California Plein-Air Painting describes the large movement. of 20th century California artists who worked out of doors (en plein air), directly from nature in California, United States. Their work became popular in the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California in the first three decades after the turn of the 20th century.
Considered to be a regional variation on American Impressionism, the painters of the California Plein-Air School are also described as California Impressionists; the terms are used interchangeably. And this is my version of it.

Lost State of South California
California's way too big. And the north and south are way too different to be in the same state. Splitting the state in two isn't a new idea--in fact a guy named Andres Pico nearly pulled it off more than 100 years ago. Learn how (and why) he did it. (From the new book Lost States. )
