San Guillermo Church, Bacolor, Pampanga: May Bukas Pa
Built in 1576, half-buried by lahar in 1995 from the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991.
#travelvlog #BacolorChurch #UntoldStory #Travel UNTOLD STORY OF SAN GUILLERMO PARISH CHURCH
San Guillermo Parish Church is named after San Guillermo, the patron saint of Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines, where the church is erected. The church was originally constructed by the Augustinian Friars in 1576 – also the town's founding – with Fr. Diego De Ochoa, OSA, as the town's first parish priest. Having been installed as such two years after.
In 1880, the church was destroyed by an earthquake only to be rebuilt by Fr. Eugenio Alvarez in 1886. On September 3, 1995, lahar flow from the slopes of Mount Pinatubo which erupted into the world's notice on June 15, 1991, buried the church at half its 12-m height prompting its more than 50,000 town residents to evacuate to safer grounds in resettlement areas. Near the façade of the parish church is a museum which contains the history of the church. It also contains paintings of the Pinatubo eruption in 1991.
History
Bacolor is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. The first church was built by the Augustinian friars in 1576 on the lot of Don Guillermo Manabat, a rich landlord believed to be the founder of Bacolor. An earthquake destroyed the church and a new church was built by Fr. Manuel Diaz in 1897. It has a central nave and well-lighted transept with windows. The main retablo, side retablos and pulpit are gilded with gold leaf. The richness of the decoration of Bacolor church depicts the advanced stage of baroque and rococo. In spite of the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo, which half-buried the church on October 1, 1995, the structure is still being used as place of worship. It was already a world-renowned tourist destination before the lahar tragedies; now more tourists flock to the church whose remaining features are being preserved and maintained.

SAN GUILLERMO PARISH CHURCH
PHILIPPINES: BACOLOR: MUD FLOW COVERS 95 PERCENT OF TOWN
Tagalog/Nat
Philippine officials have urged residents to abandon the town of Bacolor, 35 miles north- west of the capital Manila.
The town has become a catch basin for mud flow from Mount Pinatubo.
But some of the residents are not about to give up living in the place where their families have stayed for generations.
Typhoon Nina has devastated the town of Bacolor near the capital of the Philippines.
About 95 percent of the town is covered with mud and a sea of sediment is now isolating Bacolor from the east and west.
For residents of the nearby towns, crossing the floodwaters - which have damaged the main roads - can be more than they bargained for.
Luckily this mother and daughter were able to recover the bag containing their earnings when they almost lost it returning from market.
They then decided to go back to the other side, and wait.
The mud flow has buried most of Bacolor under 10 feet of mud.
Nearly seven thousand residents fled the town Monday, including some two thousand residents rescued from rooftops and tree branches.
This house belongs to the family of 52-year-old Alfredo Celso - he was born in this town and has raised his three children here.
Celso says despite the mud he has no plans of leaving Bacolor.
SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog)
Everytime we experience lahar (mud flow), what we do when it gets bigger is to just go up on our rooftops. My house is a two-storey house,
built on my previous two-storey house but the mud flow can still engulf it. This is my second house already.
SUPER CAPTION: Alfredo Celso, Bacolor town resident
Like most Bacolor residents, Celso is God-fearing and has accepted the fate of Bacolor as an act of God.
But he vents his ire towards the government for not helping them enough.
SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog)
Let them send all the mud flow here. But what we want is protection. We would allow it, why not. But what can we ask from the government? I hope
they can give us protection, those of us who remain here. What protection are they giving us. Nothing! The protection they give us are those helicopters, and for all we know those might just even crash on us.
SUPER CAPTION: Alfredo Celso, Bacolor town resident
So while some townspeople of Bacolor recover whatever they can to leave for a safer place - and as the government is using all available assets to evacuate the people in danger - people like Alfredo Celso are staying.
They are left with only one recourse: to pray that the next storm to hit the area will not finally wipe them out.
