Dead fish San Diego creek Irvine
Recent rain raised the level of the San Diego Creek in Irvine. This video was taken on Saturday 7/14/2012 at the side of the creek in the vicinity of the Audbon House at the San Joaquin Marsh. The pool that these fish were stranded in had already dried out and the fish were dead.
I think dredging work a little further up the creek earlier in the year may have something to do with it as I walk along this stretch of the river almost every weekend and I have never seen this happen before, even in the winter when the river can flood quite often.
Whoever is responsible for the river (Orange County or Irvine Ranch Water District?) needs to open a channel from this large pool on the west side of the river at the Campus Drive bridge to avoid this happening again.

Birds of the San Joaquin Wildlife Reserve
Birds that winter over at the San Joaquin Wildlife Reserve have been arriving for some time already. The American White Pelicans have been back from Canada for some time now. The North American Coots have ben arriving in the last 2 or 3 weeks. And the permanent-resident Great Egrets are pairing up and searching for nesting sites at the top of trees.
The San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge Nature Trail
A while back I was able to find the time to make a trip to the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge while visiting family way up in Central California. The refuge is located southeast of Ripon, CA along Route 132. The nature trail itself is 3.8 miles long and is a loop that breaks off in various locations and has two entrance points at the gravel parking lot. Other than the gravel nature trail there is not much for humans to do at the refuge, but I can assure you the wildlife viewing along the trail is quite nice. Be sure to bring a pair of binoculars, a camera with zoom (which I was not using for these photos), and lunch.
Water in the City of Irvine
Water is an indispensable resource that many of us take for granted. While safe and reliable drinking water is provided by the Irvine Ranch Water District, the benefits of clean surface waters (creeks, streams, and channels) are important as well. Issues with surface water quality can threaten the wellbeing of our ecosystems, wildlife, and public health at local beaches. The City of Irvine makes it a priority to prevent pollutants from entering storm drains which lead to waterways such as creeks, bays, and the ocean; while also encouraging its residents to do their part by using water in a sustainable and responsible manner.
