San Juan Del Sur is known by backpackers as a crazy party town because of Sunday Funday, but we saw many families and elderly couples enjoying this little beach town as much as the well traveled nomads.

Meet the CHRIST of San Juan del Sur
A trip to Nicaragua is incomplete without some days in the coastal town of San Juan del Sur in Rivas for some sun, surf and party or relaxation, depending on your taste. Here we stay in a great villa over-looking the countryside, drive up to the Christ statue/landmark and have a taste of the first locally brewed craft beer from here.

San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua seems to be an almost mandatory stop for the traveller on the tourist trail. Some just never leave. San Juan del Sur is located in a big sweeping bar that narrows out in the ocean at the two headlands, and is a small but busy town that has a reputation of a surf town, because of the beaches surround San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua.

One of the things that San Juan del Sur is famous for, is the Sunday Funday pub crawl. We happened to arrive the day before Sunday Funday, but having travelled through Nicaragua, and passed many people along the way, we took info, and unanimously elected against doing it. We did not want to waste money and our days in Nicaragua partying, and then feeling horrible. Instead, we walked up to the Christ of Mercy Statue overlooking San Juan del Sur from the north headland of the town. A steep but enjoyable walk up to the statue offers you a terrific view of the coast of San Juan del Sur, all the San Juan del Sur fishing boats and even a cruise ship passing by the bay, if you time it right. You also can look north from San Juan del Sur and see the beaches up the coast from the Nicaragua town.

After a nice walk up to the viewpoint over San Juan del Sur, we sluggishly moved down the steep walkway back towards the center of San Juan del Sur, managing to avoid the inevitable rain. We found a great cinder block hut to sip on a few ice cold beers and enjoy the incredible sunset of San Juan del Sur.
Going to be in San Juan del Sur Nicaragua, for a few days and then my time in Nicaragua will be ending, and it is onto the rich coast of Costa Fortune!

Visit San Juan del Sur - Tips for Visiting San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
San Juan del Sur is a great beach destination in the southwest corner of Nicaragua. It is cheap, has quite a bit of affordable food and accomodation and has few tourists. It is not for luxury travelers, but it is a fun place for surfing, hitting the beach, fishing, and a bit of hiking. Relax with a Tona beer and have fun in San Juan del Sur!

CROCS on the BEACH in San Juan del Sur
We round up our stay in this beautiful Nicaraguan destination by staying in a countryside resort, visiting the main bay, a nearby beach and seeing crocodiles lounge in a stream alongside beachgoers.
We also hit the main town and enjoyed some really great eats and visited some bars, the local market, an art gallery and more. Needless to say, SJDS is a place we'll keep coming back to as we've barely even scratched the surface.
