We stayed at San Simeon Campground in Feb. 2018 and we camped up on the top at their Washburn Sites. We actually don't like staying down below, as I think it smells a bit moldy, so we always camp up on the top, it's more open and this time a year it's so beautiful with the green hills.

San Simeon William R. Hearst Memorial State Beach
San Simeon Beach AKA William R. Hearst Memorial State Beach - This amazing beach and trail is directly across from our famous Hearst Castle. From fishing on the 1,000-foot wood pier to hiking along sandy stretches of the shore, swimming in the summer sun to surfing the winter waves, this protected cove offers a rich array of aquatic adventure and activity all year long. Being south facing, the surf is calm and the wind is usually lighter. Picnic tables can be found here, along with restrooms, water faucets, grills, and a kayak and boogie board concession for equipment rental.
Located directly across California Highway 1 from Hearst Castle, find a parking space amid the 150-spot parking lot and spend the day enjoying the sights, sounds and fun of San Simeon's most famous beach.
Just north is Piedras Blancas Beach which is home to over 15,000 northern elephant seals!
Do not confuse this beach with San Simeon State Park which is located a few miles south and offers beach camping. (See that park here:

Hearst Castle is a National and California Historical Landmark mansion located on the Central Coast of California, United States. It was designed by architect Julia Morgan between 1919 and 1947[3] for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who died in 1951. The California Park Commission voted to approve its inclusion in the California State Park System, and that was approved by the California State Legislature in 1954 (with a proposed admission charge of $1/per person [$9 adjusted for inflation] and a 50¢ bus ride.[4] However, ironing out the details with the Trustees of the Hearst Estate and the Hearst Corporation took several years. Agreement was finalized in 1957, and it opened in 1958.[5] Since that time it has been maintained within the Hearst San Simeon State Park where the estate, and its considerable collection of art and antiques, is open for public tours. Despite its location far from any urban center, the site attracts millions of travelers each year.

Today, in this Cambria Travel Guide, we're heading to the Central Coast for 10 Things to Do in Cambria, California! Cambria is located on beautiful Pacific Coast Highway 1 (between Morro Bay and San Simeon), and about halfway between LA and San Francisco.
Most Cambria hotels are located on Moonstone Beach Boulevard or in the town's East Village district. This is where you'll also find most of the shops and restaurants in Cambria.
