Sandhills Curiosity Shop - '16 Days, 8 States'. (Sept 2008 )
The Sandhills Curiosity Shop in Erick, Oklahoma is one of the most unique and special places to visit in all of America.
We had the pleasure of vising the 'shop' and experiencing the hospitality of Harley and Annabelle during our Route 66 tour in September 2008.
This clip is an example of what transpired during our visit when Andy McDermott jammed with Harley.
In April 1986, Harley was sitting in the City Meat Market. He had no electricity and no water. He had an extension cord running across the alley to his home (he calls it the Redneck Castle, and noted that it was open to the public) to power a 40-watt light bulb that he used to read by. He was sitting there in an old rocking chair when a car pulled up and two women got out. They said they just wanted to get out to stretch their legs. Harley took an immediate shine to the younger of the women, and he said “Honey, you’ve come to the right place.” Annabelle has been there ever since.
Harley spent 22 years on the road as a musician. In 1986, he had just gotten divorced from his fourth wife, and he was there “kind of recuperating.” He notes that Erick, Oklahoma is probably the cheapest place in America to live. He was born there on Route 66. He was just hangin’ out in 1986, and said they still do just that today. People come by, and they visit with them and “just try to add a little spice to their lives and ours, too.”
I'm very sad to report that Annabell passed away in October 2014.

While touring Route 66 we wandered into Erik Oklahoma late on a Sunday Afternoon. While scoping out the Sand hills Curiosity Shop , a place decked out with incredible memorabilia Harley Russell invited us in and gave us the great souvenir of the visit and trip. This is a mandatory stop if you're driving the Mother Road. Read it all at 66in25 on Blogspot!

THE BEST ROUTE 66 STOP - Sandhills Curiosity Shop | 10K Road Trip Vlog Day 12
This is Day 12 of our 10,000 mile road trip across the US and Canada. This is THE BEST STOP ON ALL OF ROUTE 66 (well, at least on the 1250 miles we've driven of it).
Harley is a hoot! We loved getting to know him and he seemed to have a great time with us. :) You can find him on Facebook here:
It's such a fun and different experience. You never know what you're going to get. You also can't tell the difference between Harley the person and Harley the performer, but it really doesn't matter. He has a good heart and he's always entertaining. It's all in good fun, so just laugh it off no matter what he says.
Time Stamps:
0:01 - Welcome to Erick, OK (supposed Redneck Capitol of the World) and the Sandhills Curiosity Shop

What's going on here?
We quit our jobs, left New York City, bought a car, and decided to spend the summer driving around the US and Canada. The plan is to hit at least 35 states and 3 provinces and cover more than 10,000 miles. Watch from the beginning here:

Our Gear:
Canon G7X Mark II: (it’s amazing and basically sees in the dark)
Canon G7X: (the original is almost as good, but less expensive)
Joby Gorillapod: (fantastic versatile bendy tripod – this is the slightly smaller “action” version that’s easier to travel with and comes with a mount for a camera and a gopro)
Macbook Air: (we edit everything on Final Cut Pro on a Macbook Air, which is light and easy to travel with)
External Hard Drive: (the videos are a little too big for the macbook air to handle, so I edit everything off an external hard drive)

9 10 16 ERICK OKLAHOMA : REPENT & BE BAPTIZED ! #AmazingGRACE!
_________ ALS0 SEE ________________ GREETINGS! if you have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and you are ready to become a Christian and can say the following: I'm sorry Jesus for my sins. Thank You for dying to save me. I welcome You into my heart & commit my life to You then I BAPTIZE YOU in the NAME of the Father, Son, & Holy SPirit (baptism in the Spirit) and you are NOW A Christian and begin your journey to eternal life! Some things to do once you become a Christian. 1st, start talking to God. We call it prayer. You can do it anywhere, anytime, not just at church with your eyes closed. You can pray while driving, while jogging, in school, wherever...; it also helps you build a personal relationship with Jesus. 2nd, get a Bible. The Bible is the Word of God. It includes an Old Testament & a New Testament. You can get one at most bookstores for a few dollars. Or you can get one at some churches, often times for free. Or you can message me here on youtube & I will send you one for free. 3rd, find a church. I encourage you to find a church that supports traditional values (ie one man + one woman = marriage; & also defends unborn life and is against abortion). Don't settle for the 1st church you find. I encourage you to try to find one that has solid Biblical teaching, with a pastor who cares about people, and a congregation that genuinely wants to help new members become a part of the Body of Christ (another name for the worldwide Christian church is the Body of Christ) ...; those are a few basic starting steps for becoming a Christian. And remember, sometimes life becomes more difficult as a Christian, but don't give up...hang in there...God will never push you beyond what you can handle. Trust Him. It's worth it. God be with you and bless you.

Traveling from California on Route 66 in my 1959 Cadillac, Eric Wittman and I take two days to drive the old road through Oklahoma. With enough video footage and still photos taken at the WEST WINDS MOTEL in Erick, POP HICKS RESTAURANT and the RIO SIESTA MOTEL in Clinton, LUCILLE HAMONS in Hydro, CAROL HOLLOWAY in Kellyville, the 66 MOTEL in Tulsa, the ruins of the W. E. AUTO COURT in Sapulpa and the DAIRY RANCH and BUFFALO RANCH in Afton, I have made individual video segments for each of those locales. What is seen here, is everything else shot in between during those two days in Oklahoma.

Route 66 Road Trip! - Episode 07 - From Erick,OK to Amarillo,TX
Well, we've done it. We have completed one week of our Route 66 trip. One of our first stops is the Sandhills Curiosity Shop where we meet up with the owner Harley. Now, you have heard how some people march to the beat of their own drummer? Harley has his own brass band, I'm sure! A one-of-a-kind individual who brings new meaning to the word character.
From there we check out the U-Drop Inn in Shamrock, Texas and the famous Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo.
As always, thanks for coming along for the ride!
