Sandy Point State Park Beach Maryland, USA
At the foot of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is Sandy Point State Park, a stretch of beach bordering the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. For those who don't want to traverse the more than 60-mile drive to Ocean City or Assateague Island, this is an option for sunbathing or fishing. During the summer season, part of the beach is watched by lifeguards. Fishing is allowed in particular areas, such as rock jetties and a fishing pier. Crabbing is also a popular pastime, catching the Maryland staple, blue crabs. Information and supplies can be found at the state park's marine store, located near the boat launch ramps.

MSP Polar Bear Plunge 2010 at Annapolis, Maryland
A day at the beach - MSP Polar Bear Plunge 2010 at Sandy Point Park - near Annapolis, Maryland.
January 30, 2010; this was the 1pm plunge. The 3pm plunge was canceled due to EMS concerns, leaving many disappointed. I think the snow came to 7 inches later. This is a benefit for the Maryland Special Olympics, their largest. This was the 14th year. It raised about $3.5 million dollars. People came from 35 states including Florida, California, and Hawaii. Now - these people are nuts. But it's a great excuse to do something crazy in mid-winter with a bunch of wild wonderful people, and raise money for a good cause. $50.00 minimum contribution needs to be raised. Many raise thousands. Governors, congressmen and sports figures take part. About 15,000 people were signed up for this dip. Some didn't get to experience the full effect of 36 degree water (legs like numb tree stumps, underwater scream, bugged out eyes, icy hair, temporary shrinkage, and a feeling of warmth when coming out of the water into 20 degree air) - 3pm canceled. First time they've ever canceled one, I think. Not to be deterred, some took things into their own hands. See Ali B at for a good one. See plungemd.org for this year, Saturday, Jan 29, 2011. See you there. Don't forget your bathing suit; or at least underwear.
(The EMS call at the end was for hypothermia, think. Alcohol in the blood doesn't prevent it.)

Bay Bridge, Maryland, USA - Not Scary Bridge
Bay Bridge, Maryland, USA - not scary bridge
This video is about our road trip during the Memorial Day weekend using the Westbound span of the Maryland Bay Bridge en route from Maryland to Virginia. Crossing the Chesapeake Bay, it connects the state's rural Eastern Shore region with the urban Western Shore. This is the world's longest continuous over-water steel structure bridge. At the end of this video, you can see the Sandy Point State Park which is a public recreation area located on Sandy Point at the Western end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
It was an awesome and enjoyable journey over this bridge, which overlooks sea water on both sides of this bridge. It is probably scary to drive in bad weather with ferocious winds. Still I am so glad we experienced driving on this legendary bridge.
