Travel Germany - Visiting the Great St. Martin Church in Cologne
Take a tour of Great St. Martin Church in Cologne, Germany -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Great St. Martin Church stands tall over the Rhine River in Cologne, Germany.
It was built between 1150 and 1250 on what was originally an island in the middle of the river.
The church is a Romanesque Catholic style building, and was formerly a Benedictine monastery.
Architecturally, the church features an impressive example of a triconch, which forms a cloverleaf around the crossing.
Although the church was badly damaged in World War II, it was fully restored by 1985.
Today the church can be found in Cologne´s Old Town.
Currently, the church is open to visitors, and houses a branch of the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem.

Cafe Richard : a true luxe gem with a pedigree going back to 1855. It's best for its luscious cakes but also serves a breakfast buffet, a salad buffet and a decent selection of cooked German dishes. Great people-watching from the terrace tables. lonelyplanet.com

KOLN // COLOGNE // BY THE RIVER (2018)
Cologne Köln is the largest city in the German federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the fourth most populated city in Germany (after Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich). It is located within the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region which is Germany's largest and one of Europe's major metropolitan areas. Cologne is about 45 kilometres (28 mi) southwest of North Rhine-Westphalia's capital of Dusseldorf and 25 kilometres (16 mi) northwest of Bonn.
Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine, near Germany's borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. The city's famous Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. The University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln) is one of Europe's oldest and largest universities.
Cologne Cathedral, officially Hohe Domkirche Sankt Petrus, Cathedral Church of Saint Peter is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Cologne, Germany. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and of the administration of the Archdiocese of Cologne. It is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996.] It is Germany's most visited landmark, attracting an average of 20,000 people a day, and currently the tallest twin-spired church at 157 m (515 ft) tall.
Construction of Cologne Cathedral commenced in 1248 and was halted in 1473, leaving it unfinished. Work restarted in the 19th century and was completed, to the original plan, in 1880. The cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and has the second-tallest spires. The towers for its two huge spires give the cathedral the largest façade of any church in the world. The choir has the largest height to width ratio, 3.6:1, of any medieval church.
Cologne's medieval builders had planned a grand structure to house the reliquary of the Three Kings and fit its role as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor. Despite having been left incomplete during the medieval period, Cologne Cathedral eventually became unified as a masterpiece of exceptional intrinsic value and a powerful testimony to the strength and persistence of Christian belief in medieval and modern Europe.
Kranhaus (crane house, plural Kranhäuser) refers to each one of the three 17-story buildings in the Rheinauhafen of Cologne. Their shape, an upside-down L, is reminiscent of the harbor cranes that were used to load cargo off of and on to ships, two of which were left standing as monuments when the harbor was redesigned as a residential and commercial quarter in the early 2000s. Each building is approx. 62 meters in height, 70,20 meters long, and 33,75 meters wide. They were designed by Aachen architect Alfons Linster and Hamburg-based Hadi Teherani of BRT Architekten. Construction began on 16 October 2006, and the first building was completed in 2008.
The southern and middle buildings provide approx. 16,000 square meters (172,200 square feet) of office space each, on 15 levels. The northern one harbors 133 luxury apartments totalling approx. 15,000 square meters on 18 levels.
