Torii Gates at Nezu Shrine - Tokyo, Japan
I thought I wouldn't get to see the beautiful vermillion torii gates unless I went to Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, but I was wrong. I found a mini version in Tokyo at Nezu Shrine.
I got there at 9am on a Monday, and you can see right as I finish, a tour group was arriving. I actually walked through it starting at the end, but by the time I tried walking through again, it was packed.

Sanja Matsuri in Tokyo 2016 - One of the most popular festivals in Tokyo
The Sanja Matsuri (Sanja Festival) is a festival held every year in Asakusa, Tokyo.
Asakusa is a major tourist area in Tokyo, with many tourists going to see the Senso-ji temple and all the souvenir shops.
With this festival, it's even more busier. The festival is held every year in May, and it was really nice seeing the portable shrines (mikoshi) and the atmosphere.
Of course my favourite part of any festival here is the festival food! I had a BBQ pork skewer and a rainbow shaved ice (Kakigōri (かき氷)).

The Markets and Ancient Town of Takayama, Japan
Takayama is a fun little, historic town located in the Japanese Alps and with a large morning market along the Migayawa River. Takayama was established over 300 years ago and Sanno-machi Historic District is a beautifully preserved old town.
Again, not enough time to really enjoy Takayama. Stop by the friendly Information Center on a Ekimae Chuo Street before doing anything for a walking map (in English).

Day 87 & 88 - Takayama and Kanazawa
We couldn't have experienced Japan without leaving Tokyo and getting out to the countryside! We took a train North to Takayama. much to our surprise and enjoyment there was snow!
it doesn't take long to explore Takayama, it's a small town but makes up for it's size in character. We spent the day trawling the streets for local food and souvenirs. We finished the day in bar flame tasting many of the local sake!
Next day we had an early start taking the train to Kanazawa. This is large city with much to see. The highlight for us was Kenrokuen Park. Beautiful scenery with lots of the local people wearing
