Visiting the charming Antigua in Guatemala
The charms of Antigua
the bus to Guatemala City is freezing cold, driver is another NFS fan. We struggle to stay in our otherwise large seats.
We’ve had some sleep and arrive around 5 a.m. in Guatemala City. The shuttle guy is waiting for us (we were told to wait until 6) so good news!
But the shuttle is somewhere else so we go out for a walk in a very non-tourist friendly area in the dark.
We reach the shuttle and our driver is of course in a hurry but we need a real bed so ok.
At some point of time he asks money from us. We paid the other day and we have voucher. He’s not happy as it Is obviously something not agreed with the agent in Flores. A fight follows he refuses to give us our backpacks. Just before I call the police, Nace convinces the driver to call the agent. Driver not happy but what can he do?
Todo bien. We head to the house were supposed to stay. It’s a quiet local neighborhood. I mean everything’s quiet on a Saturday morning before 7 a.m.
They don’t expect us that early and there’s at least one dog inside.
The dog is friendly and they allow us to use another room to sleep until it’s time to check in.
We wake up fresh and enthusiastic for a walk. Antigua is full of cars and tuk-tuks and smells like something you don’t want to spend hours walking in. We wonder how so many people are attracted to this town.
We haven’t eaten in almost 25 hours and we stumble a lovely family-run restaurant where a mother and daughter pampered every our whim.
For dinner we had less luck and waited half an hour for very small and expensive sandwiches. And everywhere we get surrounded by street merchants and beggars.
Ok, Antigua has its cool vibes. The colonial architecture, the food scene, the language schools. And this important religious procession which is like a small carnival. And the pancakes for late dinner!
We won’t be doing a volcano hike this time. We don’t have the proper equipment, also the mental and physical shape and mostly the weather isn’t very promising for nice views of eruptions.
But the view from our balcony is worth millions! Erupting Volcano del Fuego, the majestic Acatenango and the nearby Agua. We are enchanted by the smoking eruptions of the coughing volcano. And a sunny walk in the morning reminds us why so many people are attracted to the photogenic Antigua. And even better pancakes!

Cook & Affect: Assisting a Vocational Training Culinary Arts Program in Guatemala
SANTA CRUZ, GUATEMALA --In rural areas of Guatemala, the indigenous Mayans have been economically marginalized for decades. One of the biggest challenges they face is finding sustainable jobs, beyond seasonal agricultural work. Luckily, a fantastic local non-profit called Amigos de Santa Cruz has constructed CECAP, which is a vocational educational center for the local Mayan inhabitants of Santa Cruz.
One of the greatest successes of CECAP has been the culinary arts program, as all 17 of the graduates from the first two years have steady work as cooks in hotels and restaurants in the area. Building upon this success, we offered to help them develop their program, as they are looking for ways to make the program self-sustainable. In order to expand their menu and bake goods they can then sell in the local market, Cause & Affect decided to help them by purhcasing the kitchen supplies they need to start baking pizzas, desserts, cakes, etc. With $955, Cause & Affect purchased a new food processor, a Kitchen Aid hand mixer, a rolling pin and various other kitchen accessories needed to expand the program's menu, instruction and profitability.

On my third day in Guatemala in partnership with the Real Intercontinental Guatemala we headed out on an UNREAL food tour of Antigua!

I started by having a delicious breakfast at the Real Intercontinental Guatemala and some fantastic coffee. From their we drove one hour south to Antigua. We partnered up with A La Carta Tours and Antigua Rides to give us this unreal food tour of Antigua.
We started by heading to the neighborhood of San Juan del Obispo. Their we saw a 15th century church and had some Chuchitos (Guatemalan version of Tamales). They were spicy and delicious!
Next up we entered Chocolateria Antigua to see how they turn Cacao into chocolate bars. We then tried 13 different chocolates. They were all so good! I had to buy myself some.
From their we walked down the street to El Abuelo del Vino which is a fruit fermenting factory. They ferment over 40 different fruits and turn them into fruit wine. We saw the process and tried a dozen very strong wines!
After that we drove across town to Cerro de la Cruz to get an incredible view over the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Antigua. To end the tour we hit up La Cuevita de los Urquizu to have a truly unique Guatemalan meal. When you visit Antigua you have to eat here!
Next time you head to Guatemala I recommend working with my friends at A La Carta Tours: and Antigua Rides

Whitney Underwater - Lake Atitlan
Whitney was in Guatemala for a gymnastics camp. On this day Whitney and her family had the great fortune of visiting Lake Atitlan. The hotel pool was a great place to start the day so Whitney and Sterling got some exercise while admiring the spectacular view of the local volcanoes.
From Wikitravel:
Lago de Atitlán, (English: Lake Atitlán), is a beautiful volcanic lake in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. It is ringed by small towns, many of which are favourites among backpackers. The region encompasses the lake and the towns around them. Panajachel is best known, and a good entry point, but more off the beaten track are San Pedro La Laguna or the less party, more meditation village of San Marcos. Due to the region's popularity, other towns along the lake, such as Santa Cruz la Laguna and San Juan, are now starting to see growing tourism.
