SUMMARY
=======
The Santa Fe Trail was a 19th-century transportation route through central North America that connected Independence, Missouri with Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pioneered in 1821 by William Becknell, it served as a vital commercial highway until the introduction of the railroad to Santa Fe in 1880. Santa Fe was near the end of the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, which carried trade from Mexico City.
The route skirted the northern edge and crossed the north-western corner of Comancheria, the territory of the Comanches, who demanded compensation for granting passage to the trail, and represented another market for American traders. Comanche raiding farther south in Mexico isolated New Mexico, making it more dependent on the American trade, and provided the Comanches with a steady supply of horses for sale. By the 1840s, trail traffic along the Arkansas Valley was so heavy that bison herds could not reach important seasonal grazing land, contributing to their collapse, which in turn hastened the decline of Comanche power in the region. The American army used the trail route in 1846 for the invasion of New Mexico during the Mexican–American War.After the U.S. acquisition of the Southwest ending the war, the trail helped open the region to U.S. economic development and settlement, playing a vital role in the expansion of the U.S. into the lands it had acquired. The road route is commemorated today by the National Park Service as the Santa Fe National Historic Trail. A highway route that roughly follows the trail's path through the entire length of Kansas, the southeast corner of Colorado and northern New Mexico has been designated as the Santa Fe Trail National Scenic Byway.

Santa Fe Road Trip 2018!!
Before the college semester started, a group of good friends took off for an epic adventure to Santa Fe, New Mexico! The crew stopped off at Roswell for an alien experience then went on to their destination to ski, hike, and be kids once again!
Camping & MTBing Santa Fe, New Mexico | Bandelier National Monument
Our trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico started with us leaving on the 4th of July at 6am from Little Rock, Arkansas. We arrived at Santa Fe KOA Journey around 6pm. We set up our tent and did a quick camp ground review. After that we drove to Blue Corn Brewery where we had amazing food and beer.
The next morning we had french toast, shopped at Trader Joe's, and then went on a Mountain Bike Ride at North West of Santa Fe. The trail systems name we road was La Tierra Trails, and we entered at the La Cuchara Trailhead. Was an amazing ride. After that we drove to downtown Santa Fe where we walked around. We visited Vinyl Cafe, San Miguel Mission (the oldest church in the United State. Built in 1610), Apothecary Restaurant at Santa Fe Oxygen and Healing Bar, and Hervé Wine Bar. After that we left downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico and drove up to Ski Santa Fe in the Santa Fe National Forest to explore and do a little yoga.
We left there and drove to make dinner at camp. For dinner we made filet mignon, salmon, broccoli, and mushroom risotto.
We woke up the following morning and cooked breakfast burritos. After that we drove to White Rock, New Mexico to ride a bus to Bandelier National Monument. Ones done exploring Bandelier National Monument, we drove back to Santa Fe, New Mexico and had a beer at Santa Fé Brewing Company. Our last stop on this trip we went over to Chili Line Brewing Co. where we had a beer and dinner.

I go on a day trip to explore Santa Fe, New Mexico by foot. We visit the historic plaza, the Loretto Chapel and it's miraculous staircase, the St. Francis Cathedral, Artsy Canyon Road, and the oldest house in the United States. Scenic byway explores the Santa Fe Trail
The Santa Fe Trail was actually several trails, as travelers had options to take different branches. In New Mexico that primarily meant the mountain route coming in from Colorado at Raton, or the Cimarron route coming in from Oklahoma near Clayton.
Fairview Cemetery Santa Fe, New Mexico
Fairview is Santa Fe’s only non-Catholic pioneer cemetery and its history begins long before the May 7, 1884, date of its founding. The earliest headstone is dated 1862 and was among those moved 1895-1903 from the old Masonic-Oddfellows Cemetery downtown which was located where the Scottish Rite Cathedral now stands and extended to the site of the present Plaza del Monte.

Route 66: Day 7 & 8 (Amarillo, TX - Santa Fe, NM)
Full Route 66 Tour:
Route 66, Day 7:
Today you leave Texas and are on your way into “The Land of Enchantment”, New Mexico – after passing through the world famous Cadillac Ranch. How about the ghost town of Glen Rio, where you can stand with one foot in New Mexico and the other one in Texas? From there we enter the land the Comanche Indians, where mesas, mountains, cactus and pines define the landscape as head up into the High Plains and altitude of Santa Fe in central New Mexico. Santa Fe is one of America’s oldest and most beautiful cities, and will be our base for the next two nights.
Route 66, Day 8:
Today is at leisure to rest and enjoy the distinctive flavor of this nearly 400-year-old city. The blend of cultures here becomes evident in the southwestern architectural style so closely associated with New Mexico’s capital city. Perhaps you would like to take a ride along the river valley to the old Native American Indian town of Taos, enjoy a sunrise hot air balloon ride, or play cowboy for a day on a horseback ride along a mountain or canyon trail. Santa Fe provides all of these opportunities and more.

Main Loop Trail and Alcove House - great hiking and unique history at Bandelier National Monument!
The entire southwestern United States is full of numerous cultural and historic sites, and one of the most accessible locations to explore them is at Bandelier National Monument. With NPS maintained ladders to explore the cliff dwellings of the ancestral pueblo people, the Main Loop Trail is a great introduction to the area. For those that are more adventurous, the ladders up to Alcove House provide great views of Frijoles Canyon.
