LISBON: Jerónimos Monastery - Belém (Portugal)
Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome near the Tagus river in the parish of Belém, in Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal).
The monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém, in 1983.
It was originally built to support pilgrims who travelled in the region by Henry the Navigator; expanded from 1501 to serve as a resting-place for members of the House of Aviz; and as a church for seafearing adventurers who embarked during the Age of Discovery.
The church and the monastery, like the nearby Torre de Belém and Padrão dos Descobrimentos, symbolise the Portuguese Age of Discovery and are among the main tourist attractions of Lisbon.
Within the Church of Santa Maria, in the lower choir, are the stone tombs of the explorer Vasco da Gama (1468–1523), the first European to reach India by sea, and of the great poet Luís de Camões (1527–1570).
The Museu Nacional de Arqueologia (National Archaeological Museum) and the Museu da Marinha (Maritime Museum) now occupy the west wing of the monastery.

[dt.] Santa Maria de Belém, Lisboa (Lissabon) wurde beim großen Erdbeben im Jahre 1755 am wenigsten zerstört. Deshalb sind hier einige bedeutende Sehenswürdigkeiten erhalten geblieben.
Dazu zählt das Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Hieronymus Kloster) in dem sich der Sarkophag von Vasco da Gama, neben den Grabstätten einiger portugiesischer Dichter und Könige befindet. Das Gebäude wurde nach hundertjähriger Bauzeit 1601 fertig gestellt und zählt heute zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe.
Ein weiteres Weltkulturerbe ist der Torre de Belém. Er wurde als Bastion errichtet und diente später als Gefängnis und Waffenlager. Er ist eines der Wahrzeichen von Lissabon. In unmittelbarer Nähe befinden sich das Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Denkmal der Entdeckungen) das an Portugals glorreiche Vergangenheit als Seefahrernation erinnert und das Kulturzentrum von Belém.

One is the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos - Hieronymites Monastery - where the sarcophagus of Vasco da Gama is next to the tombs of some Portuguese poets and kings. The building was completed after a hundred-year construction time in 1601 and today it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another UNESCO World Heritage is the - Torre de Belém - Tower of Belém. Built as a bastion it served later as a prison and arsenal. He is one of the landmarks of Lisbon. In the immediate vicinity are the - Padrão dos Descobrimentos -- the Monument to the Discoveries - it is reminiscent of Portugal's glorious past as a seafaring nation and is the Cultural Centre of Belém.

Belém Tower (Tower of St. Vincent) is a sentry, or military outpost, that was constructed to protect the Tagus Estuary from enemy attacks and pirates.
It was built between 1513 and 1519. It is located in Santa Maria de Belém or Belém, a civil parish of the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal.
In 1983, Belém Tower became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
