Fox Cam 2019, Santa Rosa Island, Channel Islands National Park
The Channel Island Fox (Urocyon littoralis) was critically endangered and has made a successful and dramatic recovery. The fox restoration program included removing the feral pigs from Santa Cruz Island, relocation of the Golden Eagles that were preying on the foxes as well as reintroducing bald eagles.

Santa Rosa Island - Channel Islands National Park - May 2014
Santa Rosa Island is the second largest of the Channel Islands of California and is located approximately 26 miles off the coast of Santa Barbara.
Home to a widely diverse number of plant and animal species, some of which can only be found on the island, Santa Rosa Island has seen the comings and goings of Pygmy Mammoths, native Chumash indians, European explorers, sea otter hunters, Chinese abalone fishermen, Spanish Missionaries, Mexican and American ranchers and the US military.
We explore parts of this scenic island such as Lobo Canyon, Cherry Canyon, Water Canyon Beach, and Torrey Pines Trails.
The Adorable Island Fox, Santa Rosa Island, Channel Islands National Park
The Island Fox (Urocyon littoralis) from Santa Rosa Island (Urocyon littoralis santarosae) in the Channel Islands National Park was recently on the brink of extinction along with the foxes on Santa Cruz and San Miguel Islands. In August 2016 the Island Fox on the Northern Channel Islands was removed from the endangered species list. My wife Susie and I spent a week camping on SRI in September 2016 and feel blessed to have so many fox encounters.
The Island Fox is absolutely adorable, about the size of a housecat, and we instantly fell in love with them. These cute little guys don’t exist anywhere else on earth except here off our California coast. The fox on each island is a unique sub-species. The one on Santa Rosa has the longest ears! It’s also a descendant of the mainland Gray Fox. The story of the foxes brush with extinction and recovery is remarkable and inspiring. I provided some additional information at the end of the video.

Featuring Bechers Bay, Water Canyon Beach, Torrey Pines, Cherry Canyon, Lobo Canyon, Carrington Point, some relics from the past and more. Santa Rosa Island Research Station Overview
A brief overview of the work and priorities of our Santa Rosa Island Research Station off the coast of southern California. Our Santa Rosa Island Research Station opened in 2013 and been growing steadily ever since. Only seven other university research stations exist in National Parks across the U.S. The only one focused on undergraduate (and interdisciplinary) research, our Santa Rosa Island Research Station has become central to our campus' vision and curricula across numerous undergraduate programs at CSU Channel Islands.
This is an abbreviated version of the recording of this briefing given by our Station Director, Cause Hanna. It was part of a station visit by Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin, CSUCI President Erika Beck, and CSUCI Foundation Board of Directors Chair George Leis on September 30, 2016. Our tour was rounded out by Superintendent of Channel Islands National Park Russell Galipeau and a cadre of CSUCI folks: Provost Dan Wakelee, Vice President Nichole Ipach, and Professor of Environmental Science and Resource Management Sean Anderson.
The longer version of this discussion (wherein we discuss various aspects of the restoration and management of Santa Rosa Island) can be viewed here:

Some tips:
1. Pack appropriately. It’s 1.5 miles to the campground and we always see people struggling to carry an amazing amount of gear.
2. Good weather/wind sites:
3. No worries about drinking the campground water. Never had an issue.
4. If there is wind in the forecast, it’s good to have the tent all the way inside the windbreak. Also, make sure the tent is staked down securely.
5. When the wind dies, there can be mosquitoes in the campground.
6. Bring a small pack for hiking and to have with you on the boat with necessities (your large pack/bags will go below deck and be inaccessible for the boat ride)
7. If there is a naturalist onboard and leading any hikes those can be good to do as you get a partial ride to hike. We’ve had naturalist led hikes to both Lobo Canyon and Carrington Point.
8. If it’s nice out, get down to Water Canyon Beach for at least one sunrise during your stay (about a 15 minute walk) Also, go swimming at least once, very refreshing!
9. The island fox like to come through the campground at night. There is a chance if you leave out shoes or socks or towels, etc. they might become a new favorite toy.

Backpacking Santa Cruz Island - Channel Islands National Park
4 of us decided to head over and do some backpacking on Santa Cruz Island. Santa Cruz Island is the largest of the eight islands in the Channel Islands National Park and also the largest island in California. Santa Cruz Island is also home to the Island Fox and was also the home to many Chumash Indians.

Smuggler's Cove Hike on Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands National Park
Smuggler's Cove Hike on Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands National Park
Smuggler's Cove is the most popular hike on Santa Cruz Island, and as the most visited island, it is probably the most popular hike in the entire Channel Islands National Park. The 8-mile hike takes you through the interior portion of the island and down to a cove on the opposite side. It gains a decent amount of elevation at the start of the hike and on the way out of the cove. It is an amazing hike to do in the area though.
