THE SURIN PROJECT: Saving Thailand's Elephants
This short film gives a behind the scenes look at elephant tourism in Thailand and the work that one non-profit project is doing within this industry.

About The Project:
Located in the Surin province of Thailand, The Surin Project works to improve the living conditions of captive Asian elephants by offering elephant owners (known as mahouts) an alternative source of income to traditional forms of elephant tourism. Instead of elephants being used for trekking, street begging, and participating in circus shows- which often lead to poor living conditions and a life spent in chains... The Surin Project makes it possible for mahouts to make a living through responsible volunteer tourism. Volunteers from around the world come to the project to get hands on experience with elephants in a more natural setting than tracking camps or zoos might allow. Meanwhile their labor and financial donations positively contribute to the local community and help improve the living conditions of captive Asian elephants. Surin The Elephant Empire
Surin is the province that has the largest population of captive elephants in Thailand. Surin Project began to work as a volunteer program, planting food for the elephant and hiring the mahout family to work with our project, leasing their elephant, allowing them to have an income independent of street-begging.

Surin Project - Camping with elephants
In the cool season, when it is dry and not too hot (usually the month of January), we go camping with the elephants and mahouts. Volunteers get the chance to camp by the riverside, out in peaceful nature with a roaring campfire, beautiful sunset and wonderful sounds of elephants trumpeting close by.
The elephants are still chained, but they get to be on much longer chains out in a more natural habitat, where they can forage and they are closer to their friends; an elephant sleepover!
The mahouts take shifts to stay up and make sure that the elephants are fed and that no one escapes! (Fah Sai escaped off her chain last year early in the morning; she headed straight for the camp kitchen and ate all the food in sight! Thong Di noticed straight away and was able to get her back on the chain in the forest.)
We all sit around a campfire, sing songs, have some fun with the mahouts and watch the stars. It really is amazing!

The Lion Sleeps Tonight | Playing for the Elephants in Surin | Trip to Thailand, part 7
With the elephants again, but standing on the ground this time! Live at Ban Ta Klang village, North-East of Thailand, at Surin Elephant Village, playing a revisited version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
The song was first recorded in zulu language by Solomon Linda in South Africe in 1939. It was later covered in English by many artists and bands, becoming a big hit in 1961 in a cover version recorded by The Tokens.
I performed this song already in my previous video in my series. It was just a short version, because I was singing and playing while sitting on an elephant's trunk and I fell down at the end. Watch the video here:
This is the 7th video in my new travel series from #Thailand, where I spent one month travelling in November and December, 2017. I visited other parts of the country in the past and this time I focused on the North and the South, with a few days in Bangkok at the end.
I recorded many live music videos in many interesting places there.
Performed on November 28, 2017, at the Surin Elephant Village in Ban Ta Klang, near Surin, North-Eastern Thailand, which is part of the Save Elephant Foundation - Surin Project. Many elephants live here and volunteers take care of them. Most of the elephants come from other parts of Thailand after retiring from work, as in some parts of Thailand these creatures are traditionally used by man in working activities, mostly carrying weights or people. In this place elephants can enjoy a comeback to a more normal life.
Performed with Yamaha GL1 Guitalele and Hohner Blues harp in the key of G.
The short intro clip is a timelapse recording of myself painting the Thai flag and showing some previews of the videos that will appear in this series in the next weeks and months.
The background music was recorded by me and it's a short part of The Last Words, a track from my new album (Another Sun).
