Video contest honorable mention: Bicycling in Italy....that's amore!
...Perhaps a little bit more wine. Need we say more about an Italian bike tour?
Congrats on the video contest honorable mention Bicycling in Italy....that's amore!
Submitted by: Jo Wessels
Description: It became evident right away that a little bicycling, a little sightseeing, a little food, and perhaps a little bit more wine was the cadence of this amazing Through the Heart of Italy guided tour. Bicycling through small villages, huge vineyards, ageless castles, and close to spectacular lakes hallmarked a week's experience of a lifetime. Wine and olive oil purchases we made on day tours were shipped back to the states.... and are now disappearing too quickly as we savor memories of a perfect Italian biking trip!

Also combination of car tours and food tour in the district of Testaccio are possible. Experience our slow journeys in vintage FIAT 500. Imagine yourself racing through the Roman countryside in a modern, air-conditioned and .... totally aseptic vehicle; now close your eyes, reduce speed, and imagine yourself on the same winding road in a colourful vintage FIAT 500: hear the purr of the engine, the singing of the cicadas, smell the freshly-cut summer hay drifting in through the open windows and the sun's warmth licking at your skin... That's what we call a Slow Journey. Our FIAT 500 are also perfect for weddings and other celebrations. As an alternative to the prosaic black and white Rolls Royce, our Vintage Fiat 500 cars will add to the perfect wedding plan, a touch of colour, glamour, fun and poetry -- in short, the Italian touch. Thanks to Niccolò De Masi for the video. Special thanks to Maestro Filadelfo Castro filadelfocastro.it for the amazing rendition of Minor Swing by Django Reinhardt. Thanks to all the ROME 500 EXP crew!
How to See Rome like a Local
Watch more How to Travel videos:
Step 1: Rent a moped
Rent a motor scooter, or motorino. Yes, traffic can be hairy and Romans are crazy drivers. But there's no better way to zip around town. Bonus: you'll feel like Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.
Tip
For a great, romantic view of Rome, head up the winding road from Trastevere to the Janiculum Hill.
Step 2: Have lunch on the go
Lunch on Rome's ubiquitous street food, pizza al taglio, or pizza by the slice. Sold by weight, it comes with a variety of toppings. Speak with your hands, just like the locals, to communicate how big a piece you want.
Step 3: Navigate side streets
Explore the streets around Campo de' Fiori, a piazza popular for its morning produce and flower market. The area is filled with edgy clothing shops, intimate wine bars, and art galleries. For bargain finds, follow the Romans to the Borghetto Flaminio or Via Sannio flea markets.
Tip
Savor sit-down cafes in the afternoon. In the morning, have your cappuccino or caffellatte standing up at the bar.
Step 4: Visit Villa Pamphili
Spend an afternoon at Villa Pamphili, Rome's biggest park. You'll find residents jogging, dog-walking, kite-flying, and picnicking among towering trees, ponds, fountains, and gardens.
Step 5: Take a stroll
Hit the streets for a late afternoon passeggiata, or leisurely stroll. Tons of locals indulge in this ritual, especially on the weekends -- window-shopping, catching up with friends, and flirting, often with a gelato in hand.
Step 6: Enjoy summer pleasures
If you're visiting in warm weather, take a day trip to Lake Bracciano. About 25 miles northwest of Rome, it offers sandy beaches, seafood restaurants, windsurfing, and sailing. Back in the Eternal City, check local listings for open-air cinema and music festivals throughout the summer.
Did You Know?
From 1968 to 2002, a man nicknamed D'Artagnan lived off coins he collected from the famed Trevi Fountain, sometimes netting as much as $1,300 a day.

Tauck Bus Tour Northern Italy with Karen Kelley
Preferred Travel of Naples
Contact us at 239.261.1177
Hello, my name is Karen Kelley. I’m a senior leisure travel consultant here at Preferred Travel. I’ve been in the industry for over 40 years, but believe it or not I have never been to Northern Italy with the exception of Venice. So, I recently had the opportunity to do that with Tauck World Discovery.
I had traveled with Tauck before but never on a bus trip. I’ve been on riverboats with them and I’ve been to Africa with them but never on a European bus adventure and I was very pleasantly surprised. There were people of all ages on there. There were several people, couples traveling together. The trip took the worry out of everything. I felt like I had plenty of time to explore and our guide was so wonderful. I learned an awful lot.
We started the trip in Milan and ended in Venice. I had never been to Milan before and I was very pleasantly surprised. I imagined it was an industrial city devoted to cars and fashion, which is true but we were in the old part of the city walking distance to La Duomo and La Scala. We had the privilege of visiting The Last Supper, something I had always sent clients to but wasn’t able to do myself.
We went to Bellagio, which is my preferred area of the Lake Como district. It has cobble stone streets, beautiful restaurants, beautiful galleries and shops. It is a section of the Lake Como district that actually separates the lake so you have the most beautiful views from there and it was just wonderful. From there we went to Lake Maggiore and spent the nights in Stresa, which was a small town. Very lovely.
Our hotel was so wonderful. Ernest Hemmingway had stayed there during the war recuperating and he had actually written part of A Farewell to Arms there. The hotel has not changed except to be kept up. You are walking into a completely different, old world atmosphere. Absolutely Fabulous!
One of the surprising highlights for me was actually vising the Ferrari factory. I am not a car buff and if I was planning the trip for myself I would have never included that but we went there and that is actually where his father’s factory had been. It is where everything took place. Very Interesting and happily for me they were having a special exhibit with all of the old Ferraris that were used in all the old movies or used by old movie stars. It was a very interesting exhibit and the film they showed on his life was absolutely fascinating.
Our last stop on the trip was Venice. I’ve been to Venice before and I absolutely loved it because it is one place you can count on. It never changes; everything is the same. Even though I had been there before, there are a few places I had never been like the Doge’s Palace. I never wanted to stand in line that long. With Tauck, we had the opportunity if we wanted to visit the Doge’s Palace in the evening. There were only probably 15 of us in the entire palace. It was so beautiful at night. It was an experience I’ll always remember. I remember walking back by myself to meet my friend for dinner. I swear, I was the only person on St. Mark’s Square and it was all lit up. It was absolutely beautiful.
Well, Northern Italy is known for it’s cuisine and I was absolutely not disappointed. From the pizza in Milan to the very end of the trip in Venice, the food was fabulous. Bologna is very famous for it’s food. We get Bolognese sauce from there. We went to a very special restaurant called the 12 Apostles. It is not named after what you would think it would be named after. But apparently years ago, there were 12 craftsmen who used to hang out in that part of town at an old café and just world events, I guess, back then. So, later on a family bought it and named it after these 12 men. So, they were the 12 Apostles. It’s a very special restaurant. You are greeted by a family member when you knock on the door and you are invited in. They have a wine collection that is unbelievable. When they were doing remodeling, downstairs where they have the wine cellar they found all of these ancient Roman ruins. So now you tour the wine cellars among the ruins. It’s a fantastic experience.
