Scenic Byway 12 Promotional Video
Scenic Byway 12 is located in Garfield County Utah. It is one of the most beutiful roads in the country and has been designated an All American Road. This road takes you through such places as Bryce Canyon National Park and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. This is the promotional video we created. Some of our shots were used on NBC Today show when they highlighted the area
Highway 12 — A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway
Located in southern Utah and stretching from US-89 south of Panguitch in the west, past Bryce Canyon NP, Tropic, Cannonville, Henrieville and Escalante and then Head of the Rocks, the Hogs Back, Boulder and on up to Torrey where it ends at the junction with UT-24, highway 12 is one of the great roads and one you must drive if you find yourself in the area. This road, also known as A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway, is best visited during spring or fall though it is usually passable all year round. The north east end between Boulder and Torrey, which climbs a mountain ridge above 9000 feet, can be snowed in during the winter. During the summer the temps can reach beyond 110F or 43C at the lower elevations.
This video only covers a small portion of the route and begins just as we're approaching the Hogs Back from the north. We travel the Hogs Back and descend through the Calf Creek Area and across the Escalante River, and on to the magnificent Head of the Rocks area. This trip ends about 10 miles east of Escalante.
This was an early attempt by me to record video from the top of my car to avoid glare and reflections when recording from the inside and I used a GoPro Hero 3 Black. This is not a bad camera, but it is limited to HD only, has a lens that is too wide and the AWB gets confused on occasion. I have since upgraded my kit to include 4K video camera and plan to revisit the area in the coming year.
The area around Escalante is a great base of operations for anyone wishing to explore the slot canyons and other sights between Bryce Canyon NP and Capitol Reef NP. The area itself is designated as the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. A huge portion of southern Utah is now managed by the park service as either a national park, national monument, or national recreation area. And, at the end of 2016, the area managed by the park service was massively increased with the inclusion of the Bears Ears National Monument at nearly 10M acres or nearly 15 thousand square miles.
This part of the American west is a very popular destination for visitors from around the world. I've personally met many people Germany and France and a smattering from many other places. The desert west is particularly popular with Germans and many of the best videos and pictures take of the area are from our German visitors. As a transplanted Utahan I welcome you all -- come, enjoy and leave a little of you money with the small local businesses that survive on YOUR business.

This drive begins at the southwest end of Utah 12, and travels all the way to the northeast end at Torrey, Utah. It's a rather long drive, but it's one of the most scenic highways in America, and I think you'll enjoy it. Lower Calf Creek Falls - Scenic Byway 12 - Utah - LeAw in the USA //Ep.39
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 39th episode, we hit the road again. Lucky LeAw, our old vintage 1990 Ford F-250 4x4 truck camper, is fixed.
We visit Calf Creek Falls and drive all Scenic Byway 12 Route. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
Calf Creek Falls is a perennial waterfall in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah that totals 214 feet (65 m). The lower tier is a 126-foot (38 m) cascade and is very popular, because it can be reached by an easy hike on a 5½ mile roundtrip trail. The upper tier is a 88-foot (27 m) plunge and is much less known, as it requires a 1-mile (1.6 km) scramble past the lower falls.
Named for its use as a natural pen for calves back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the creek remained relatively unknown as a tourist destination until the formation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, under the Clinton administration. Walking between mineral-streaked cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, hikers pass beaver ponds and pre-historic rock art sites en route to the paradisiacal pools.
The trailhead is located at the Calf Creek Campground on Highway 12, 11 miles south of the town of Boulder, and 15 miles east of the town of Escalante. The highway follows the route of the creek for most of the distance, atop the bluff to the east of the canyon.
Calf Creek Campground: Located at the campground in the Calf Creek Recreational Area, there is a parking fee for the parking lot, and a camping fee in order to stay overnight. The trail sets off to the north, away from the campground. Though mostly level, the trail frequently crosses vast sandy tracts that can make it difficult for some to navigate. About a mile and a half up the canyon, on the east wall quite high up rest two Fremont granaries and a group of pictograph panels, dated to approximately AD 1200.
State Route 12 or Scenic Byway 12 (SR-12), also known as Highway 12 — A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway, is a state highway designated an All-American Road located in Garfield County and Wayne County, Utah, United States.
Proceeding west to east for 122 miles (nearly 200 km), the highway starts south of Panguitch at an intersection with US-89, crosses part of Dixie National Forest and Bryce Canyon National Park, continues through the small towns of Tropic, Cannonville, and Henrieville. It crosses various parts of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GS-ENM), continues northeast through Escalante and over the Escalante River, then north through more of GS-ENM, Boulder, the Aquarius Plateau, Grover, ending in Torrey at an intersection with SR-24, five miles (8 km) west of Capitol Reef National Park. The 30-mile (48 km) long portion of the highway that ascends and descends Boulder Mountain on the Aquarius Plateau is known as Boulder Mountain Highway.

Utah’s Scenic Byway 12 - “A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway”

Scenic Byway 12 || All American Road in Utah || Grand Circle Tour
This is 122.863 miles (to be exact) of pure driving bliss. Welcome to Utah’s Scenic Byway 12, also known as “A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway.” What’s more, this stretch of pavement is also designated an All-American Road. Only one-third of America’s scenic byways get this distinction, and it’s given because these roads offer unique features that you can’t find elsewhere making these byways tourist destinations unto themselves.
The scenic byway connects U.S. 89 near Panguitch on the west with S.R. 24 near Torrey on the northeast. It is not the quickest route between these two points, but it far and away the best. Hitting the road, travelers often have a destination in mind. That destination quickly takes a backseat to the journey as they climb into the Dixie National Forest from Torrey.
A stop at the scenic overlook near the road’s summit at about 9,000 feet puts it all into perspective. Atmosphere envelopes distant lands, the Henry Mountains, Grand Staircase–Escalante and the shimmering red rock of Capitol Reef National Park. Contrasting stands of subalpine fir and aspen decorate the immediate surroundings.
Here, likeminded travelers, warriors of the road of all backgrounds come together: RV, motorcycle, convertible, classic roadster, sedan. This is auto and motorcycle tourism at its best, where everyone coexists in complete harmony, out of respect for the byway.
Driving Utah State Route 12 – Part 1 of 4 – Torrey to Boulder
It’s time to relax and leave the driving to us as we cruise through miles of scenery in south central Utah along State Route 12.
State Route 12 – also known as Highway 12 — A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway – is designated as an All-American Road. It is beautiful and diverse, climbing the Boulder Mountain at the east end and crossing through miles of red rock canyons at the west end. In between are numerous vistas and places to stop along the way including a petrified forest.
We started on the eastern end of the route which begins at the junction with State Route 24 in Torrey. The journey from Torrey to Boulder takes you 36 miles southwest over the Boulder Mountain. Larb Hollow, a scenic turnoff, gives a wide view of the lands below from 9,200 feet. At the 9,600 foot summit you are near the top of the geological wonderland called Utah. The landscape along the way is blanketed with pine and aspen trees along with snow fields off to the side of the road.
At Boulder we stopped for brunch at a fantastic food truck called Magnolias Street Food stationed at the Anasazi State Park Museum. Their fixings were quality road food that kept us powered for miles.
Make sure to check out Parts 2-4!
Filmed on May 25, 2019. The day was a mixture of sun and clouds, and unfortunately we occasionally get a bit of glare and reflections on the windshield...

Driving Utah State Route 12 – Part 2 of 4 – Boulder to Escalante
It’s time to relax and leave the driving to us as we cruise through miles of scenery in south central Utah along State Route 12.
-----
From Boulder we traveled 29 miles southwest to Escalante, crossing the The Hogsback, a narrow ribbon of highway along the top of a thin stretch of mountain with steep drop offs on either side. As anxiety-provoking as the few minutes on The Hogsback were, the views are incredible of striped mountains and a deep, green valley below.
Soon the mountains give way to a rolling landscape where each turn in the road opens up new sights for the eyes. Along the way there is a certain rhythm to the drive, speeding along at 60-70 miles per hour until you come to a small town where you slow down to 30-40, then the town passes by and the speed increases again until the next small town. It’s a pleasant rhythm.
When we reach Escalante we pulled into the Hole-In-The-Rock Heritage Center to stretch our legs. The view of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument from the parking lot was like a wide-screen panorama.
Make sure to check out Part 1 and 3-4.
