Holbein to Tillmans at Schaulager Basel
| Holbein to Tillmans - Prominent Guests from the Kunstmuseum Basel at Schaulager in Basel, Switzerland, brings together approximately two hundred works from the museum of fine arts in Basel, together from others from the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation and private collections.
The external cause for this unusual project is the upcoming Van Gogh-exhibition, a spectacular, comprehensive exhibition taking place from April to September 2009 at the Kunstmuseum Basel. To create space for the show, parts of the Kunstmuseums collection had to be removed. The Schaulagers proposal was to host these work and to present them in an exhibition.
The show Holbein to Tillmans - Prominente Gäste aus dem Kunstmuseum Basel allows to see these works in a different light at Schaulager. Some of them have been spread out on a monumental wall in Petersburger hanging style, providing the framework for the interior spaces of the exhibition.
Among the works on display are Allegory of Folly by Rodney Graham, Erasmus von Rotterdam by Hans Holbein the Younger, Das mutige Weib by Ferdinand Hodler, White Fire II by Barnett Newman, Anders pulling splinter from his foot by Wolfgang Tillmans.
The exhibition runs until October 4, 2009. A series of events including discussions of the works and a conference will accompany the exhibition.
The Schaulager building was designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.

VTV Classics (r3): Andrea Zittel at Schaulager Basel (2008)
This is a remastered and re-edited version of VernissageTV’s original documentation of the opening of the exhibition Andrea Zittel at Schaulager in Basel as part of VernissageTV’s Classics series. The video provides a walkthrough of Andrea Zittel’s exhibition at Schaulager in 2008. The works on display in this show span 16 years. “One of my favorite things about this exhibition is that I think it reveils much of the interconnectedness between the various bodies of work and the two-dimensional pieces which aren’t shown as often as my sculptures provide insight into the thinking process behind them.” (Andrea Zittel).
Andrea Zittel was born in Escondido, California, in 1965. In New York in 1991, Andrea Zittel founded her A-Z enterprise, an art project that has provided the framework within which she has conducted her research and designed her works ever since. In 2000, Zittel purchased an abandoned home in the California high desert. She called it A-Z West and made it her new site for experiment. Since then she has been living there and in Los Angeles.

Francis Alys: Fabiola / Schaulager at Haus z. Kirschgarten
/ Schaulager at Haus zum Kirschgarten Basel / Switzerland Opening Reception / Walk Through March 11, 2011. More info:
The Schaulager in Basel is already a very special institution and exhibition space. With the solo show Francis Alÿs: Fabiola, Schaulager has realized also an unusual project. Instead of presenting artist Francis Alÿs collection of images of Saint Fabiola in its own premises, Schaulager staged the exhibition in the Haus zum Kirschgarten, once Basel's foremost town house, and now a museum of extravagant domestic lifestyles.
The Belgian artist Francis Alÿs has collected images of Saint Fabiola for nearly twenty years. The Fabiola portraits are mainly the work of amateurs. The reference of all the images is the 1885 portrait of Saint Fabiola by the French realist painter Jean-Jacques Henner. Over the years, Francis Alÿs gathered over 370 portraits, done in a variety of media such as oil painting, gouache, embroidery, ceramics, and enamel. Alÿs acquires the portraits in flea markets and thrift shops throughout Europe and Latin America.
Francis Alÿs has been presenting this collection since 1994, for the first time in Mexico City, followed by London (Whitechapel Gallery, 1997), New York (The Hispanic Society of America, 2007/2008), Los Angeles (LACMA, 2008/2009), London (National Portrait Gallery, 2009), Burgos (Museo Nacional Centre de Arte Reina Sofia at Monasterio de Santo Domingo de Silos, 2010). After Basel, the next stop is Lima, Peru.
Alÿs uses his Fabiola collection as a Trojan horse. It is never presented in a conventional white cube gallery. Instead, he looks for a special location for each Fabiola exhibition. This location must have a historical context.

Film about Markus Raetz
In his forty years of work, Markus Raetz has repeatedly addressed the deceptiveness of perception: what seems unambiguous is exposed and its validity relativized; what seems unrelated suddenly develops, as if by magic, a meaning. Not only art is in the eye of the beholder. The knowledge of the objects proves to be a question of movement and mobility.
Markus Raetz (born 6 June 1941) is a Swiss painter, illustrator and sculptor.
Born in Büren an der Aare near Bern, Raetz obtained a teacher's education and taught primary school until 1963, when he embarked on an artist's career with stays in Bern, Amsterdam, Carona (Ticino) and Berlin. He married Monika Müller in 1970, and has a daughter with her, Aimée.
Since the 1960s, Raetz has created numerous works, including more than 30,000 drawings.[2] His work focused on drawings and paintings in the 1960s and 1970s, and continued with sculptures in the 1980s and 1990s, beginning with the sculpture Der Kopf in the Merian Park in Basel (1984). The principal topic of his work is the nature of perception. His works do not focus on what they portray, but on how they are perceived. They often require interaction by the viewer, and can be understood only when viewed in motion or from different angles.
Raetz has exhibited works at numerous international exhibitions, including at documenta 4, 5 and 7. Works by him are held by public collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Schaulager in Basel, the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Kunstmuseum Bern. He was awarded, among other recognitions, the Prix Meret Oppenheim in 2006 and the Gerhard-Altenbourg-Preis in 2004. He is represented by the gallery Farideh Cadot Associés since 1981.

Basel, Switzerland`s Culture Capital - Unravel Travel TV
It is not easy to describe Basel in a few words. Descriptions for example such as cultural city of Switzerland or university town are merely an attempt to give some sort of impression of the wealth of culture, history, relaxation and enjoyment to be found in the city. Whether it is a visit to one of the numerous museums, a dip in the Rhine or an evening at the theatre, allow yourself to be inspired by the joys that await you in Basel.
Thanks to the EuroAirport, located just 15 minutes from the city centre, Basel is also easily reached by plane. With over 500 scheduled and charter flights each week from over 60 destinations, quick and convenient travel to the city is guaranteed.
Basel is an important interchange and transport hub and, with its three mainline train stations, offers excellent connections to all Swiss cities and the most important European metropolises. The Swiss Railway station (SBB), the French Railway station (SNCF) and the Badische Bahnhof, operated by German Railway (DB), are all conveniently located in the heart of the city.
Basel is located close to major European motorways running both north-south and east-west and is therefore easy to reach from all directions.
Basel is widely acknowledged as Switzerland's city of culture and for good reason, with visitors confronted by art at every turn - whether simply wandering through the streets of the Old Town or visiting one of the city's nearly forty museums.
The sheer number of museums alone indicates that Basel is not a city that lovers of art and culture can explore in a day. With their themed collections, the museums of Basel have something for every taste and many have reputations that stretch far beyond the Swiss border. And then there are the countless galleries scattered liberally throughout the city. There are also many high-class cultural events that take place throughout the year, underlining Basel's reputation as a cultural hot-spot. Of course we should not forget that the city also has a lively theatre and music scene.
Fondation Beyeler: With the construction of the museum building, designed by Renzo Piano, in 1997, the Beyeler collection has been made permanently accessible to the public. Around 230 works of art reflect the views of art collectors Ernst and Hildy Beyeler on the art of the 20th century.
Kunstmuseum Basel: The Kunstmuseum Basel is the oldest publicly accessible art collection in the world. The focus of the museum is on paintings and graphic art by artists from the Upper Rhine region from 1400 to 1600 and the art of the 19th to 21st centuries.
Theater Basel: The largest mixed-programme theatre company in Switzerland offers a broadly diverse repertoire, including dance, opera and theatre. The conferring of the award 'Opera House of the Year' for both 2009 and 2010 shows the high quality of the productions of this theatre company.
Classical Music: You may have seen one of Basel's famous orchestras in concert in your home country or on tour either elsewhere in Switzerland or abroad. The internationally-renowned Basel Chamber Orchestra and Basel Symphony Orchestra perform classical works at the highest level.
Basel Bands: Fans of Swiss rock, pop or indie music have good cause to be excited right now - as well as the Lovebugs, who have made a name for themselves far beyond the Swiss border, there are currently some great young bands on the scene, such as Sheila She Loves You, Blush or The Bianca Story.
