In Zeiten blutiger Glaubenskriege bröckelt das Imperium von König Philipp von Spanien. Er selbst ist innerlich erloschen, ausgebrannt. Ein Nachfolger ist nicht in Sicht. Seinem eigenen Sohn Don Carlos verwehrt er nicht nur den Zugang zur Macht, sondern versagt ihm auch jede Liebe. Die seinem Sohn versprochene Frau, Elisabeth von Valios, heiratet er selbst und macht sie zur Königin von Spanien. Carlos wiederum reibt sich in der Vergeblichkeit seines Liebens und Handelns auf, während die Karrieristen der Kirche und des Militärs, Domingo und Herzog von Alba, ihre Machtübernahme planen. In diese verfahrene Situation kommt Marquis Posa, früherer Freund von Carlos und ehemals in königlichen Diensten, jetzt ein Freigeist, der die Schrecken der Glaubenskriege und der fundamentalistischen Machtkämpfe mit angesehen hat. Er kämpft für einen Weg der Toleranz, und es gelingt ihm für Momente, das in Zynismus und Isolation erstarrte Machtgefüge in Bewegung zu bringen. Doch die zerstörerischen Kräfte schlafen nicht.

Hamlet studiert in Deutschland, in Wittenberg. Sein Vater stirbt, er reist zur Beerdigung nach Helsingör. Claudius, der jüngere Bruder seines Vaters, ist der neue König und heiratet Hamlets Mutter. Hamlet hat eine Erscheinung. Sein Vater fordert ihn, scheinbar aus dem Jenseits heraus, auf, seinen Tod zu rächen: Kein anderer als Claudius, Hamlets Onkel, habe ihn hinterrücks vergiftet. Doch Hamlet überkommen Zweifel. Traut er diesem Traumbild?
Seine Welt gerät aus den Fugen!
Hamlet ist ein Kämpfer und ein Spieler. Im Zweikampf spürt er sich, beweist sich, erfährt sich und seine Gegner, die Partner sind im Sich-Suchen und Sich-Finden. Ein Spiel mit vollem Einsatz, aus dem am Ende blutiger Ernst werden wird. Und ein Spiel im Spiel, um herauszufinden, was ist. Und wer man ist. Denn Hamlet ist auch ein Verliebter. Verliebt in Ophelia? Oder verliebt in Horatio, seinen Freund in Wittenberg, der plötzlich in Helsingör auftaucht?
Sein oder Nichtsein, das ist die Frage...
HAMLET spielen, heißt immer, 'den' Klassiker der Theaterliteratur neu zu hinterfragen um mögliche Antworten zu finden. Was interessiert uns an diesem jungen Mann in seiner Thirty-Something-Crisis? Wo können wir uns andocken? Welchem heutigen Lebensgefühl, welcher Lebensverzweiflung entspringen Hamlets Seelennöte und Selbstzweifel? Was reißt diesen jungen Mann aus seiner Mitte und was hindert ihn daran, sein Gleichgewicht wieder zu finden? Wo beginnt sein Fall, wann verliert er seinen Halt, was hindert ihn an der Tat? Unter welcher Last, welchem Erbe, welchem Erwartungsdruck und Selbstbildnis bricht dieser hoffnungsvolle Zukunftsträger zusammen? Und welche Blutspur hinterlässt Hamlet uns, die wir diesen Absturz miterleben und immer rufen wollen: Mach! Tu! Handle! Nur um im Augenblick der Tat dann doch zu warnen: Halt! Warte! Nicht weiter!
Wir werden HAMLET mit einem All-Male-Ensemble auf die Bühne bringen: In der Tradition des Elisabethanischen Theaters werden sieben Männer die tragische Geschichte des Dänenprinzen erzählen und dabei sowohl die Tiefen des Dramas ausloten, als auch die komischen Seiten des Spiels im Spiel voll auskosten!

Directed by Peter Zadek, with whom she often collaborated, she starred in plays at the Schiller Theater in Berlin and at the Volksbuehne Berlin. She soon was named Germany's „most promising young actress and appeared at the Josefstadt Theatre in Vienna, Salzburg Festival, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Theater des Westens Berlin, Residenztheater Munich, Berliner Philharmonie, Vienna Festival, Raimund Theater Vienna and in Los Angeles, Jerusalem, Zurich and Amsterdam.
She played leading roles in musicals like „Les Miserables, „A Chorus Line, „Cyrano, „My Fair Lady, „Kiss me, Kate, „Chicago and appeared in concerts worldwide. She was often cast for parts in works of Kurt Weill like „The Threepenny Opera, „The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny or „The Seven Deadly Sins.
Sona MacDonald received the prestigous O.E.Hasse Award and recently won the „Nestroy-Award for her role in „Der Talisman at the Josefstadt Theatre.

This documentation focuses on the workshop (11.-29.06.2012) on Friedrich von Schiller's The robbers at the OTHNI-theatre in Yaounde, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Cameroon. The Cameroonian author and stage manager Martin Ambara and artists of his laboratory OTHNI theater, the stage manager Arne Pohlmeier living in London and Cologne stage manager Rolf Hemke together looked on the relationship between a classic text and practice of modern representation, and also on that between the German and Cameroonian traditions.
