Land o' the Leal - Scottish Cemetery, Calcutta (Kolkata)
In June 2010, my son and I visited the Scottish Cemetery in Kolkata (Calcutta) to find the grave of Mary Ann Kelly Fimister, our great grandmother and great great grandmother respectively.
Sadly the cemetery is in poor condition, but there are plans to restore it. 1600 people, mainly Scots, are buried here and behind each grave is a great personal story.
This is the story of Mary Ann Kelly Fimister who left Dundee and her 6 children in the winter of 1908 to be with her husband, a jute salesman, in Calcutta. Less than a month after arriving in Bengal, the 38 year old woman was dead.
Sadly, I know little about the musicians, Silly Wizard, but their music is spot on! Andy Stewart is the vocalist and he has recorded a beautiful solo version of the song. You may prefer the version Andy performs solo - see

This is one of the most amazing cemeteries in the world. Gigantic monuments, around 200 years old, give or take a few decades. Picturesque and historic, set within beautiful vegetation and well-tended walkways. What a place!

My great grandmother died in India in 1909 - this is the story of her final weeks far from her home in Scotland and her six children left behind in Dundee. Andy M. Stewart is the singer of Land O'The Leal - may he forgive me for using this brilliant piece of music.

South Park Street Cemetary, Kolkata, India
The South Park Street Cemetery in central Kolkata is one of the earliest non-church cemeteries in the world. It opened in 1767 and was in use until about 1830, despite the plaque on the entry gate claiming it closed in 1790. Although Europeans started not to use it as much after that time. 1600 grave sites or tombs are located there with a vast array of fascinating architecture. Many of the tombs and monuments are of a size rarely seen in more modern cemeteries. The oldest grave is of Mrs. S. Pearson who died in 1768. Many of the markers are touching, especially of young women and children who most likely followed their husbands and fathers to India and then met with premature death from tropical diseases.

THE SOUTH PARK STREET CEMETERY
The Park Street Graveyard, Kolkata is a concentration of the who's who of British Raj and colonial times. In short its a city of the dead but by no means small. The Park Street Graveyard, Kolkata once consisted of five graveyards but only three survives today as the Lower Circular Road Cemetery, South Park Street Cemetery and the Scottish cemetery.
Earlier in the 18th century the road going near the Park Street Graveyard, Kolkata was called Burial Ground road later named Park Street .In the days of the early Raj the British were buried at St.Johns Church graveyard. But due to the rising population of the British a new cemetery was formed at Park Street. In those times Park Street was at the edge of the city and rarely any soul passed after dark. So it was quite a suitable place to create a graveyard.
Entering the South Park Street cemetery, part of the Park Street Graveyard, Kolkata is like entering a different world. Filled with colonial graves in the shape of massive pyramids, pavilions, obelisks, urns and pagodas seems that even in death they flaunted their socio-economic status by creating higher, bigger and intricately decorated graves.Employees from the East Indian Company to pre Independence graves can be found here. People like Richmond Thackery, Col.Akilis, Michael Madhusudhan Dutta, and Henry Louis Vivian Derozio are few of the famous luminaries resting in eternity here. There is certain romanticism in these graves as one reads through the beautiful inscription to the dearly departed.
The North Park Street Cemetery which existed is now the site of the Assembly of God Church School and Hospital with only a sole grave standing to remind its past. The Lower Circular Road cemetery still exists today and is still used for burial having a less number of monuments.
Park Street Graveyard, Kolkata is definitely a place for passionate historians and an open air history book for you to read and touch history. One cannot forget the experience of strolling down these impressive monuments of the dead on a lazy afternoon. It is indeed a valuable cultural reference point for Europeans and non-Europeans alike.

The Cemetery Of South Park Street Kolkata... It's Really Spooky And Memorable Place Too....
A cemetery or graveyard is a spatially defined area where the remains of dead people are buried or otherwise interred. The word cemetery (from Greek κοιμητήριον, sleeping place) implies that the land is specifically designated as a burial ground. The older term graveyard is often used interchangeably with cemetery, but primarily referred to a burial ground within a churchyard.
The intact or cremated remains of people may be interred in a grave, commonly referred to as burial, or in a tomb, an above-ground grave (resembling a sarcophagus), a mausoleum, columbarium, or other edifice. In Western cultures, funeral ceremonies are often observed in cemeteries. These ceremonies or rites of passage differ according to culturalpractices and religious beliefs. Modern cemeteries often include crematoria, and some grounds previously used for both, continue as crematoria as a principal use long after the interment areas have been filled.
