Rome celebrates New Year with fireworks, river dive
Rome celebrated the New Year in traditional style with a display of green, white and red fireworks and, for the more daring, a chilly dive into the river Tiber. Hundreds gathered to watch the 17-metre (52-foot) dive off the Cavour bridge, a custom which started over a half-century ago. Duration: 00:51

New Year's 2020 Italians dive into icy Tiber river during annual tradition in Rome
Romans braved a cold but sunny New Year's Day on Wednesday to watch a group of men, including veteran diver 67-year-old Maurizio Palmulli, jump off a bridge into the freezing waters of the Tiber river as part of an annual tradition in Rome.
The annual Tiber Dive has been celebrated on the first day of the New Year since 1946. This year four divers took the plunge, some with more style than others, plummeting off the 30-metre Cavour bridge in the centre of the Italian capital.

Four brave men in Rome took the plunge into icy waters for the annual Tiber Dive on New Year's Day, plummeting off the 30-metre high Cavour bridge in the centre of the Italian capital, some with more style than others.
Veteran diver Maurizio Palmulli, known as Mr. O.K., traditionally took his place for the final dive saluting the crowd after being pulled from the water onto a rescue boat.

Rome's Biblioteca Library: A meeting point for Italian art lovers
Right in the heart of Rome, near the Spanish Steps, is a fairly unknown building described as a true treasure, for Italian art fanatics. It's known as the Zuccari Palace, which is easily recognized by a large mask carved in stone. It's this centerpiece that marks the entrance of the Hertziana Library. .

STORYLINE
Thousands of people celebrated the start of the New Year in Rome, attending a fireworks display high above the Colosseum and a free concert organised by the Rome city hall.
However, with the financial crisis continuing to affect Italy, some revellers appeared sceptical about the country's future.
All young people will leave the country. Italy is very poor at the moment, said Giulia Franceschi, a bar owner from Santa Marinella, a seaside village near Rome.
Yet others were more optimistic, looking at the New Year as a fresh new start.
The economic worsening is not a news. We hope it will go better, we are trying to think positive and to wish for something good.
