Where Stalin grew up - From Sochi to Yerevan
(2014)
Stalin was born in the town of Gori, in the mountains of Georgia. Stalin spent his young life in various places in the Caucasus. His birth house is still there, complete with a gift shop where you can buy Stalin snow globes. How do the Georgians look back on Stalin? Is it a hero or a villain, or both? Jelle passes by the grave of Stalin's first wife, the prison in Baku where Stalin was once trapped, and then went into the mountains. Even Stalin's hand can be felt even in the most remote villages.

Exhibition at MIT - Armenian Genocide Commemoration - 103 years of denial
Article by Vardges Tserunyan, MITAS Social Chair. May 2018.
More than a century has passed since the Armenian Genocide by Ottoman Turkey in 1915, but the Armenian community in the United States and throughout the world still has a long way to go to educate the public about this grave crime against humanity. Members of the MIT Armenian Society (MITAS) in collaboration with the Armenian Museum of America organized an Armenian Genocide commemoration exhibit to address this task within the walls of MIT, one of the preeminent educational and research institutions of the nation. Held on the morning and afternoon of May 2nd, 2018, and entitled 103 Years of Denial, the exhibit was showcased in the famous Infinite Corridor at MIT, under the gaze of hundreds of students and faculty. It consisted of explanatory posters designed by MITAS president Siranush Babakhanova highlighting facts, figures and maps about the colossal scale of massacres and deportations the Armenian population was subject to. A keystone of the exhibit was Clouds, an art project by Arevik Tserunyan, Artist in Residence at the Armenian Museum. Her work transcended the boundaries of traditional artistic media presenting sculptures, installations, and video art to focus on the survival of the Armenian people and their subsequent renaissance.
For the whole duration of the exhibit, MITAS members and the artist answered questions of the public, shared personal stories and guided visitors to additional sources about the Genocide. Armenian food and desserts were provided as another way of introducing the Armenian culture to guests. Whether a history enthusiast or a layman looking for a class break, everyone enjoyed the spectrum presented by the organizers. Both the factual posters and the fictionalized artwork achieved another step on the way to educate the public about one of the darkest times in human history.
New initiative in Yerevan

From Art to Flea Market
A lot of cities have a vernissage, and Yerevan is one of those. Though, It is not so old, it has become an important part of the city. Once there were only painters here, but now a lot of things have changed, and it has four parts at the same time, selling paintings, sculptures and handmade jewelry, as well as pets (especially cats and dogs), old or second-hand goods (cutlery, clothes, odd-come-short) and finally souvenirs. Though all of these parts were formalized in different periods of time, the vernissage still remains homogeneous.

The installation of Cafesjian Transporter
Now on exhibit in the escalator shaft of the Cascade Complex is Pleiades Industriel/Cafesjian Transporter, 2010. This pop-art sculpture was created from an actual car -- a Subaru SVX, designed by famous Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Born in 1938, Giugiaro is responsible for the design of a number of supercars and several of the most popular everyday vehicles driven today. Giugiaro was named Car Designer of the Century in 1999 and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002. The Subaru SVX, introduced to the market in 1991 as Subaru's first luxury car, is one of his notable works, along with the Ford Mustang Concept Car of 1966, four Alfa Romeo cars and many others. The concept for this silver, interactive pop-art sculpture originated with Gerard L. Cafesjian and was executed by the Center's Exhibition Department staff.

16. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Ruzanna Khachikyan, Historian:
There is no concrete detailed information about it (this construction). There is a small sign on the first floor which only names a master who was conducting these works. The only thing we know is that they (workers) started from a hole for light and then carved everything. And only then, at the final stage, an exit was carved or a connection with those churches which are downstairs, or just an exit like here.

23. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Ruzanna Khachikyan, Historian:
you have probably noticed that there are no icons in these medieval monasteries. People prayed to the cross which, in fact, was an icon. That's why anyone who could carve (monks) would carve a lasting memorial for themselves in the form of crosses.

30. SOUNDBITE (Russian/Armenian) Varazdat Ambartsumyan, Khachkar master:
(in Russian) What God gives you is not only yours. He gives you something which you must share with others. (in Armenian) Some people create it (khachkar) and say it's them who made it. But that is not true. It's actually a God-given talent, and God passes on skills to mankind through specific men. Every person who creates them (khachkars) must understand that.

Encounters with Art / Ara Sargsyan-110: The Hero of Art at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts
The Encounters with Art series of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts for November 2012 was dedicated to the prominent Armenian sculptor Ara Sargsyan. Entitled The Hero of Art, the event commemorated the great artist's 110th anniversary of birth. The art of the latter was presented from different sides within the framework of the event.
The CCA Curatorial Assistant to the Associate Director for Public Programs Armen Yesayants presented the Encounters with Art series and passed the floor to PHD in Arts Arthur Avagyan. Mr. Avagyan made a brief and comprehensive presentation on the art heritage of Ara Sargsyan. He presented Ara Sargsyan's major works and the role in the context of Armenian statuary.
Thereafter, screening of a film Our Greats prepared by ArTV followed. The film presented interesting facts about Ara Sargsyan's life which he concealed during his all life in the Soviet Union. The founder of Armenian Artist Union and the Yerevan State University of Fine Arts and Theatre, Peoples Artist of the Soviet Union Ara Sargsyan was also one of the supporters of Operation Nemesis, Armenian Revolutionary Federation's covert operation in early 1920s to assassinate the Turkish planners of Armenian Genocide. The Operation from 1920 to 1922 assassinated many significant political and military figures of the Ottoman Empire, the main perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide.
The film was very interesting, especially that many discovered Ara Sargsyan not only as a genius sculptor but as a true example of a devoted Armenian, a real patriot of his homeland.
The following part of the event, however, was not less interesting as the CCA Curatorial Assistant to the Associate Director for Public Programs Armen Yesayants presented the poetic heritage of the great artists. Armen beautifully and artistically recited a selection of poems written by Ara Sargsyan himself which was a real surprise for the audience.
Ara Sargsyan's family was also present at the event and the evening concluded with the speech of the artist's grand-granddaughter who expressed her deep gratitude to the organizers of the event for initiating the event and presenting her grand-grandfather in an interesting and diverse way.
All were invited to a delicious reception at the CCA's Star Landing after the event.
Another series of Encounters with Art had a great success. It uncovered to the audience the known and the unknown Ara Sargsyan. The audience was very impressed with the event, which had generated public interest well ahead of November 15, with all seats having been reserved.

I am going to Cesis from the cave where I tasted the peak of autumn. I met the way of Baltic. In 1989, it was a real Baltic way, from Estonia to Lithuania, where everyone squeezed together by holding hands. I passed the Baltic route and arrived at Cesys. The town of Cesys, built by the Cesis and German Knights, was the center of the town in the 13th century. In the castle museum, there is the oldest flag in existence. This is the oldest Latvian flag in existence. It was built in 1916 and was found in a neighboring village. It looks a bit different from the current flag. I will show you another important thing. This is a real plan of 'The Way of the Baltic' in 1989. It is called the actual 'Way of the Baltic' plan, but when you unfold a long piece of paper, you are drawn to a real 'Baltic Road' marked with a pencil and colored pencil. I can see the way of Baltic at the time of August 23, 1989. It is a plan from the cave to the balmy era. I feel a desire for people's freedom and peace at the time.
