Greg Shine is the head historian at Fort Vancouver and a wealth of information on the USS Shark, and it's captain Lt. Howison who was at the helm when it sank on Clatsop Spit at the mouth of the Columbia River.
Mr. Shine authored a very informative paper about the USS Shark called 'A Gallant Little Schooner. It can be downloaded here:
The cannon from the USS Shark is currently housed at the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum in Cannon Beach OR. The Shark sank in 1846, and the cannon was recovered on the beach in 1898. It became the namesake of the tiny coastal town.
The Cannon Beach Historical Society hopes to have the cannon and capstan restored in 2012.

Leon Krier: The Architectural Tuning of Settlements
The term ‘tuning’ is well known in the world of musical instruments. Introduced in the realm of architecture and urbanism it describes a phenomenon, a set of relations, which is little spoken of, discussed, let alone mastered, i.e. firstly, the relationship and adequacy of architectural objects with the particular geometric nature of geographic networks, secondly, the dosage of vernacular and classical geometries and/or elements within a building, a group of buildings forming a larger ensemble or indeed an entire city, region, country, continent, civilization. It is the architectural and artistic parallel to Andres Duany’s Urban Transect identifying building- and settlement-patterns, ranging from the rural to the urban.
Léon Krier is an architect, architectural theorist and urban planner. He is considered “Godfather” of New Urbanism and New Classical Architecture. Krier is committed to the importance of design in creating community. The ideal built environment, to Krier, is the small- scale town or traditional city where people work within walking distance of their homes.
Léon Krier is recognized today as one of the world’s outstanding architects and urbanists. He received the inaugural Richard Driehaus Prize for Classical Architecture in 2003. He is best known for his on going development of Poundbury, an urban extension to Dorchester, UK for the Duchy of Cornwall under the guidance of the Prince of Wales and for his Masterplan for Cayalá, an extension of Guatemala City.
He is one of the first and most prominent critics of architectural modernism, mainly of its functional zoning and the ensuing suburbanism, campaigning for the reconstruction of the traditional European city model. These ideas had a great influence on the New Urbanism movement, both in the USA and Europe. The most complete compilation of them is published in his book “The Architecture of Community”. Some of Krier’s other books include “Architecture, Choice or Fate; Albert Speer: Architecture 1932-1942; “Imitation and Innovation” and “The Reconstruction of the European City”.
Krier acts as architectural consultant on urban planning projects but only designs buildings of his personal choice. Amongst his best known realizations are the temporary façade at the 1980 Venice Biennale; the Krier house in the resort village of Seaside, Florida, USA (where he also advised on the masterplan); the Arqueological Museum of Sintra, Portugal; the Windsor Village Hall Florida; the Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center on the campus of the University of Miami in Miami, Florida; and the new Neighbourhood Center Città Nuova in Alessandria, Italy. Currently Léon Krier is involved in the planning for the reconstruction of Tor Bella Monaca, a degraded suburb of Rome.

The Gulf Coast of Mississippi furnishes its citizens as well as tourists with an amazing selection of culture, dining, and consideration. Its abundance of Southern elegance and its deliberate pace compliment an immense range of options for tourists and locals to take pleasure from the heritage and joy of living in paradise.
Each one of the three Mississippi Coast counties has their own laws which govern the stunning sugar white fine sand beaches and protective seawalls. These three counties are Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson. Another county which is directly above Harrison County is Stone County. Stone County has seen substantial human population growth after the devastation triggered by Hurricane Katrina in in the later part of August of 2005. A lot of Stone County is situated 160 to 300 feet above sea level. And, the majority of Stone County is only a 15-40 minute journey to almost any seaside destination in either Hancock, Harrison, or Jackson County.
There is a common thread that links these four communities along side each other which is U.S. Hwy 90 and Interstate 10. The Mississippi Coast is rather different than the northern part of the State of Mississippi located higher than the 31st parallel.
Despite the fact that the counties and communities rival one another, all major transportation and communications links circulation east and west. In fact, these counties and areas typically have more in keeping with the neighboring States of Louisiana and Alabama. New Orleans, Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama have a very comparable ethnic history to the Mississippi Gulf Coast set alongside the northern Mississippi counties.
More than eight million visitors a year go to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the casino gaming|video gambling industry is the primary lure.
Enjoy gorgeous views of the Mississippi Gulf Coat, superb cuisine, and a laid back atmosphere that welcomes swimwear and flip-flops. The options are plenty for any kind of visit you would like like a family vacation, an enchanting getaway, a retreat, business trip, or a weekend escape. The possibilities are never-ending.
The Mississippi Coast, an area steeped in heritage and beauty, abounds in appealing places and activities to enjoy. You will find numerous lively musical and creative events. You can find tours of historical structures as well as museums. And, there are maritime outings such as sport fishing charters, boating, as well as family water recreation. To greatly help first-time tourists pick from the myriad bounty of pleasure, a simple automobile drive down Highway 90, also called Beach Boulevard is great entertainment.
Of the State of Mississippi one hundred-mile southern boundary, Highway 90 hugs almost 30 beautiful miles of beach front. From sweeping vistas on top of the Biloxi Bay bridge to the East, to the Bay St. Louis Bridge to the Weat, tourists will drive past clear gulf waters reflecting the current mood of the skies bordered by sugar white white beaches and softly swaying sea grass. The journey features stunning scenes of boating, historical homes, and centuries old live oaks surrounding the highway like lacy curtains. From Ocean Springs to the East, and then to Beauvoir, Jefferson Davis antebellum home in Biloxi, on westward toward the cities of Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis, tourists will be transported to another era. You will be awed by the wonder and resilience of wonderful trees surrounding the elegant Southern architecture of coastline homes.
Restaurants are readily available near the beach providing simple and refined waterfront eating at its finest.
Regardless if you've planned to relocate with your loved ones or are looking for a quiet beach get-a-way, let me assist you with your home ownership investment on the Mississippi Coastand guide you through the time consuming process of looking for that special property.

Maryland
Did you know... that the only actual wild ponies in the U.S. live in Maryland? ...or that the Maryland Blue Crab is the official State Crustacean? ...and that a Marylander wrote the U.S. national anthem? Get on a guided tour with Ambassador Eacho on Maryland's history and beauty. #50states #MD
Transcript:
Hello, I'm Ambassador Eacho from the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, Austria. I want to tell you about my home state, Maryland.
Maryland is a small state on the eastern seaboard. But don't let its size fool you. The landscape of Maryland is very diverse -- from the low lying eastern shore and Chesapeake Bay area to the metropolitan city, Baltimore, to the forested Appalachian foothills and the mountains in the western part of the state.
Maryland is one of the original 13 colonies. It was established in 1632 when Cecilius Calvert, the baron of Baltimore, received a charter for the land. Calvert named the colony Maryland, in honor of Henrietta Maria, the wife of England's King Charles the first.
In 1788, Maryland became the 7th state.
Maryland earned the nickname, Old Line State, in 1776 when one General stood firm against British troops in the Battle of Long Island, during the Revolutionary War.
Today, Maryland is better known for its beautiful beaches and boardwalk in Ocean City. Have you tried Boardwalk fries doused in vinegar? That's a staple of this seaside town.
Maryland is also known for its crabs steamed in Old Bay Seasoning. In 1989, the Maryland Blue Crab was designated as the official State Crustacean.
During lunch hour on the Chesapeake, vendors sell more crab cakes than hot dogs and hamburgers. And picking crabs is as much fun as eating them.
Further down the coast is the barrier island, Assateague, famous for the free-roaming ponies, the only actual wild ponies in the United States.
The state has 31 miles of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. However, much of Maryland's 12,400 square miles consists of inland water, including some 400 manmade lakes. The Chesapeake Bay that splits the state is the largest estuary in the United States. It's no wonder that sailing is a favorite pastime in my state. In fact, the capital city, Annapolis, is known as the sailing capital of the world.
In 1980 Baltimore opened Harborplace, a shopping, dining and entertainment complex, and another hot spot for tourists. The National Aquarium, one of the largest and most technologically advanced, is located in Baltimore's Inner harbor.
Every year, the world hears the state song, Maryland, My Maryland. It's sung at the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the famous Triple Crown thoroughbred race, held at the Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore.
A more famous song was written by Marylander Francis Scott Key, while he watched the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The Star Spangled Banner was officially adopted as America's national anthem in 1931.
Maryland is home to many famous people.
Baseball slugger Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore, not far from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. You can visit the Sultan of Swing's birthplace museum. Swimmer Michael Phelps, of Towson, was the first American to win 8 medals in a single Olympic games.
The Clara Barton National Historic site in Glenn Echo commemorates the life of the founder of the American Red Cross.
Other famous Marylanders include jazz-blues singer Billie Holiday and rock singer Frank Zappa, as well as author Upton Sinclair and abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
Marylanders are as diverse as the state they live in.
My favorite thing about my home state is...crabs...hard shell crabs, soft shells, crab cakes, you name it. The Maryland blue crab is the best tasting crab in the world, and you can never get enough!
