Uluwehi Falls (aka Secret Falls) - Kayak & Hike, Kapa'a, HI - (March 2019)
One of the few planned activities we had on our Kauai trip was a kayak and hike tour to Secret Falls. The obvious thing to note on this adventure is that there is nothing secret about these falls anymore and is a well-known tourist destination with many companies offering guided tours at a very reasonable price.
We lucked out big time as the weather was great and had been dry for a few days so the ~1.5-mile trail to the falls was very easy with looks of spectacular scenery. The falls themselves are beautiful but be warned that the water at the base of the falls is MUCH colder than you would expect (and this coming from a Pacific Northwest perspective).
The guide company we used was Kauai Kayak Adventures. Thomas was our guide and was very insightful on the local history of the area and the ecology of Hawaii. We would definitely recommend them to any of our followers who find themselves in Kauai. Link to there website can be found below.

Wailua River Kayaking + Secret Falls Hike + Day 2 - Kauai, Hawaii - June 2019 - Travel Vlog
Uluwehi Falls, also known as Secret Falls, is a beautiful place to kayak the Wailua River. Kauai’s Wailua River is the only navigable river in the state; a fun combination of kayaking and hiking. It's two miles each way for the kayaking part of the trip. The hike begins right from the bank, and it's 1.5 miles round trip.
Calm waters, hot, humid, but breezy, and dry hiking trail; it was a perfect weather and season combination to enjoy this activity. The hike to the falls is fairly easy, with a few challenging terrain changes, and that’s during the dry season!
I tried using my Insta360 One X with the Dive Case, but I did not get useable footage!???? I had planned on attaching the device to the boat, but it turned out that I did not bring the sticker or tape for the set up????????♀️, so I held up the camera once-in-a-while instead, but the case fogged up halfway through????

Wailua Kayak Tour to Secret Falls. What you need to know before you Kayak the Wailua to Secret Falls
The Kayak & Hike to Secret Falls is one of the most exciting & memorable things you can do in Kauai. Don’t miss this beautiful waterfall adventure on you’re visit to Kauai.
Is the Wailua Kayak tour good for families? That's not a simple answer. Our youngest just turned 6 years old. Obviously she was no help on the Kayak & the muddy, uneven trail was though for those little legs. My 9 year old was pretty good but it was tough for her as well. I'd recommend this hike for families with kids 10 years old or older.
This was our third time to do the Kayak hike to secret falls, but our first time to do it without a tour guide. I would definitely recommend a guided tour on your first time & then if your comfortable just rent kayaks & do the adventure on your own.
The first time we used Outfitters Kauai. Both times they were excellent. Click on the link below to visit their website.
They aren't the only option though. There are several companies that can guide you. Or like we did on this last trip, you can just rent kayaks & do it on your own. They'll give you a map so it's pretty easy to find the waterfall. We used Wailua River Kayak Rentals here's the link to their site...
My biggest piece of advice though would be to leave as early in the morning as possible because the trial & water fall area gets busier & busier as the day goes on. Also, don't forget to pack a good lunch to eat at Secret falls. You'll need the energy for the hike & paddle back down the Wailua river. The last two times we did the tour the wind was blowing in our face on the entire paddle back & you will get tired, even if you're in good shape.
Other than that, best of luck & have fun. If you're looking for other fun & exciting things to do while in Kauai, please check out my video, Top 10 things to do in Kauai - Best Adventures in Kauai - Must see Beaches, Hikes, Animals, & Tours - here's the link to that video...
Visiting Wailua Falls, Waterfall in Hawaii, United States
Wailua Falls is a 173-foot[1] waterfall located near Lihue (Kauai, Hawaii) that feeds into the Wailua River. The waterfall is prominently featured on the opening credits of the television show Fantasy Island.
There are paths to the bottom of the falls, but it can be muddy and slippery. The trail further from the parking lot is less steep than the closer one. In ancient times, Hawaiian men would jump from the top of the falls to prove their manhood. Some people still leap off the top of the falls, though it is dangerous and illegal. The pool is great for swimming, but there are swift currents close to the waterfall. [2] There is another waterfall nearby named 'Opaeka'a Falls. For more info, visit this link:

Kauai Honeymoon, Day 3, Kayaking the Wailua River, Secret Falls (Uluwehi)
On day 3 we rented some kayaks and went on a hike to Secret Falls, AKA Uluwehi Falls. At the end of the video, I realize that I'm supposed to take the protective cover off when I speak into the camera.
If you've noticed I'm using windows movie maker to combine my videos which greatly reduces the quality of the videos.
Wailua River Kayak Secret Falls, Kauai Hawaii
I'm not trying to cutout the outfitters but this trip is easy and less expensive if you do it on you own. Many of the rental companies offer full day rentals for ~$55 for a 2 person kayak. They will load your car and provide you a map to the falls. Wailua River is Hawaii's largest navigable river. The launch point is in the Wailua State Park. You will kayak about 2 miles upriver to the fork in the river. Take the right fork. A short distance ahead and through several tree tunnels take the left side of the island to the bank area where you pull your kayak to shore. It's easier to start the trail to the falls from the left side . The trail follows the river for 1 ½ miles. The elevation change is minimal. You reach a beautiful 120' waterfall with a large swimming pool area. PLEASE USE CAUTION FOR FALLING OBJECTS.
One advantage in doing the trip on your own is you are not held to the tour time tables. If you are lucky you will be at the falls between groups and you can enjoy listing to the falls and birds. Once you return to your kayak you can now take that other fork and paddle up past the Fern Grotto. (The tour groups just go directly back) Further upriver is a rope to swing out over the river if you feel adventurous. The return trip is a little harder due to the trade winds coming toward you. In all it's an easy trip and we'll continue to be our own tour guide for one-third the cost.

Opaekaa Falls and Wailua River
Recorded January 18, 2004. The Wailua River is a long, slowly meadering river that starts at the Wai'ale'ale Crater and is fed by several tributaries on the way to the ocean. This is the only navigable river in all of Hawaii. Several forks in the river lead to waterfalls such as Opaekaa Falls which can be seen directly across from the scenic view of the river shown in this video.

The dramatic Wailua waterfall was prominently featured on the opening credits of the television series Fantasy Island. The two streams of Wailua Falls drop 80 feet below and during high flow, the falls often sports a third-tier flow which you can see it in the video.
You can easily hike down to the landing of the fall which can be slippery. We hiked to the top of the waterfalls but the disadvantage of the hike up is you can't see the waterfalls but enjoy a small pool of water before it starts its descent.
Happy Traveling & Exploring! ????

Kipu Falls, Kauai 2009
A man died here the day before this video was taken. We traveled through a weed choked path at daybreak to check out the falls. It doesn't look like much from the video, but I assure you it is nothing to trifle with. The one brave soul that was swimming said the current was almost too hard to swim against. Be careful, and always respect da power of the islands. Mahalo!
Kilauea Falls Kauai Hawaii
Kilauea Waterfalls are one of my favorites on the island. It requires a 35-minute hike down to the falls if you dont have 4x4 vehicle. You do cross some private ranchland that I believe the landowner graciously allows you to cross. The trail is actually one of the best-maintained trails on the island (this might be due to all the films made here). The trail is so wide and well maintained; you could have a two-lane road on most of it. It is a gradual decline all the way to the falls, which is 1.4 miles from the parking area on Kahili Quarry Road. The trail takes you past banana plants, guava, and tunnels of bamboo. The trail is enclosed in tropical scenery and you do get views of the River and Valley from time-to-time. Once you get down to the falls all that changes. You probably have a quarter of an acre that is grass manicured. This is an ideal spot for a LONG picnic lunch. The falls are approximately 50 feet tall and 150 feet across. There is a very large pool in front of the falls and some room behind the falls. If you decide to swim out to the falls and walk behind them you will see why they are know by the locals as Rainbow Falls. I was impressed and for the overall backdrop, quality of the falls, and large picnic area, Kilauea Falls are one of my all time favorites located on the Kilauea River.
Kaua'i, Hawai'i - Kayaking the Wailua River to Fern Grotto & Secret Falls!
Kayaking is a beautiful way to get on the water and tour around Kaua'i!
We had 5 hours to Kayak up to Fern Grotto, where we saw possibly one of the most beautiful (hidden) sights on the island.
Watch to see what land creatures we ran into!!!
After getting back on the water and landing at our next dock, we took a MUDDY hike to Secret Falls!
There we were welcomed by many others who survived the muck to see this hidden wonder!!
We took our 5 hour (free range) rental through Wailua Kayak & Canoe, HIGHLY recommend!
