Segóbriga is a former Roman city near Saelices, in the province of Cuenca in Spain. It is possibly one of the most important archaeological sites of the Spanish Meseta. The name Segóbriga derives from two words: Sego meaning victory and briga meaning city fortress. The translation would be City of the Victory or Victorious City.

The site includes an amphitheatre, theatre, the city walls and gates, two thermal buildings or Roman baths, and the Forum. There is also a necropolis, and the circus (Roman race track) is being excavated - its outline can be seen from the top of the hill. Construction of the theatre began under the emperor Tiberius and was completed during the Flavian dynasty, circa AD 79.

The amphitheatre was built in front of the theatre with both flanking the gates of the city. The shape is an irregular elliptical form; being 75 metres long it is the biggest monument of Segóbriga with a capacity for 5,500 spectators. Two gates lead into the amphitheatre's arena. A covered corridor links these gates with the rooms where the wild animals were kept.

Saelices is a Spanish municipality in the province of Cuenca , in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha , south of which is, along the Cigüela River , the well-known Segóbriga Archaeological Park .

The origin of the name of Saelices probably comes from the Latin Ecclesia Sancti Felicis (church of San Felix), from where it would derive to Sanfelices , Sahelices and finally Saelices , its current name.

Although there are no certain data, the foundation of Saelices can be established in the repopulation after the Reconquest , carried out by the Order of Santiago in the lands of the Priorato de Uclés , to which it belonged in the Middle Ages . The proximity of the spring called Fuente Lamar , from where the aqueduct that supplied water to the Roman city of Segóbriga , abandoned after the Muslim invasion , was the probable reason that led to found the new population of Saelices instead of repopulate Segóbriga.

On a Monday, in which the National Monuments are closed to the public, are these images from the Segóbriga archaeological park, an important Celtic and Roman site located around the so-called hill of Cabeza de Griego in the town of Saelices, Cuenca, Spain.

A VISTA DE DRONE - PARQUE ARQUEOLOGICO DE SEGOBRIGA - ADTS GROUP

Trabajo realizado en el yacimiento celtíbero y romano situado en torno al cerro llamado cerro de Cabeza de Griego en la localidad de Saelices (Cuenca, España). Bien de Interés Cultural declarado Monumento Nacional el 3 de junio de 1931.

Pese a que la ciudad se encuentra en ruinas, su estado de conservación es más que aceptable, en comparación con otros restos ubicados por la península. Su visita proporciona una idea de cómo se desarrollaba la vida cotidiana en una ciudad de la antigüedad.

Tiermes, la Petra de Hispania - ciudad rupestre

La ciudad de Tiermes, al norte de España emplazada a más de 1.200 metros de altitud en la provincia castellana de Soria limite de la meseta y el valle del Tajo,es la atención de viajeros por que muchos de sus elementos arquitectónicos fueron tallados en la roca, como en la ciudad de Petra Jordania, siendo un misterio su creacion, la piedra está esculpida con tanta habilidad que existen serias dudas acerca de las culturas a las que se atribuye y si intervinieron realmente en su creación, ciudad que fue aliada de Numancia durante las guerras celtibéricas sufriendo el acoso de los romanos, aunque la historiografía actual desconoce quién ni cuándo se fundó Tiermes.
La primera menciónde la ciudad la hizo el geógrafo y matemático Tolomeo en el siglo I, quien alude a Tiermes como ciudad de los arévacos, un pueblo celtíbero. No obstante, en el lugar se han hallado restos de poblaciones que se pueden fechar en la época del Neolítico.
La urbe arévaca fue sometida por los romanos en el año 98 antes de Cristo. Durante el siglo I siendo la capital de una provincia romana, lo que la dotó de infraestructuras como el foro y acueducto. posteriormente cayó en manos de los visigodos en el siglo VI y de los árabes a principios del siglo VIII. El hecho de que este enclave estratejico estuviera situado justo en la frontera entre cristianos y musulmanes originó el declive de la cultura local.
El antiguo emplazamiento de Tiermes, también sobre un cerro escarpado, alto y con cima plana, es impresionante, debido en buena parte a las tierras rojas de los alrededores y a la arenisca de tonos anaranjados en la que fue tallada la ciudad, a la que se ha llamado la Petra de Occidente o la Petra de Hispania.Tiermes es uno de los yacimientos arqueológicos más importantes de España, aunque aún no haya sido descubierto en su totalidad. En Tiermes, aparte de la visita a el foro, la muralla y las termas, una cantera, dos necrópolis, un graderío y viviendas rupestres, , conviene no perderse el espectáculo de los buitres, que desde el castro se aprecian numerosas buitreras en las elevaciones vecinas.Dicen que los cuerpos de los guerreros celtíberos muertos en combate se exponían al aire libre, para que fueran descarnados por el buitre , animal sagrado que, según creían, se encargaba de transportar al cielo el espíritu del difunto, cuyos restos finalmente eran incinerados.
