Named for the Hakodate Hachiman Shrine, which has since moved. It's known for its splendid rows of trees and its views of Hakodate Bay with the Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship “Mashu-maru” in the distance.
An eight-minute trip from Hakodate Station on the Hakodate Tram for Hakodate Dock-Mae, then a five-minute walk from the Suehiro-cho stop.
Hakodate (函館市 Hakodate-shi) is a city and port located in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital city of Oshima Subprefecture.
As of July 31, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 279,851 with 143,221 households, and a population density of 412.83 persons per km2 (1,069.2 persons per sq. mi.). The total area is 677.77 km2 (261.69 sq mi). The city is now the third biggest in Hokkaido after Sapporo and Asahikawa.
Hakodate Won Us Over Pt 2 | Japan 2016 | Episode 9.2
My morning exploring Midori-no-Shima (seen in the previous video) started to warm me up to Hakodate, but it wasn’t until our afternoon exploring the Motomachi area (seen in this video) that we both started to fall in love with this city.
Being the first port opened to foreign trade in 1854, Hakodate attracted many foreign traders and Motomachi was their preferred area to settle. This left it’s beautiful mark on Hakodate with an interesting melding of Western, Russian and Japanese architectural styles.
While exploring Motomachi we found the Russian Orthodox Church, Catholic Hakodate Motomachi Church, Motomachi Park, the old Town Hall and let’s not forget the second best melon bread ice cream in the world. We were lucky to be descending into Motomachi Park just as the sun was setting giving us a spectacular view over Hakodate port.
We finished out our day shopping in the red brick warehouses, followed up with a meal of soup curry and Genghis Khan (barbecued mutton).
Hakodate is an amazing city, and as it revealed it’s beauty succeeded in winning us over.

Japan Trip - Hakodate
The 3rd stop on our amazing trip was to Hakadote. This trip we went from Southern Japan (Okinawa) to the North here in Hakadote. We were even able to take a Ferry boat since are original plan to take the train was changed to due a train closure. More experiences for us though.

青函連絡船メモリアルシップ - Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship -
青函連絡船（せいかんれんらくせん）は、1908年（明治41年）から1988年（昭和63年）までの間、東北本線及び奥羽本線の終点である青森駅と、津軽海峡を隔てた北海道、函館本線の起点である函館駅とを結んでいた鉄道連絡船です。
私は道民として昭和50年に中学の修学旅行で乗りました。
細かい説明は無しに、まとめてみました。

Visit Japan: Take the Underseas Bullet Train Hokkaido-Honshu
Today's first leg on an ordinary train starts at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station and travels to Shin-Aomori Station.
Transfer to the Bullet (Shinkansen) here for the 4 hour ride, partially under Seikan Tunnel – the deepest railway tunnel in the world at 240 meters/787 feet below sea surface.
It is an experience but impossible to tell exactly when the train submerges.
