Corker Introduces Tennessee Valley Authority Board Nominee
November 28, 2017 – U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) introduced Jeffrey Smith at a Senate Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee hearing on his nomination to serve on the nine-member board of directors of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and called on his colleagues to swiftly confirm nominees for the four current vacancies on the board.

Good Samaritan Law seeks to provide senior citizens with transportation needs to help them remain independent
NASHVILLE -- Legislation which encourages good Samaritans to volunteer to transport senior citizens to places such as doctor appointments, the grocery store or the pharmacy has received final Senate approval. The Protection of Volunteer-Insured Drivers of the Elderly (PROVIDE) Act, sponsored by Senator Ken Yager (R-Kingston), would help non-profit Human Resource Agencies and charitable organizations by giving transportation volunteers civil immunity as they seek to provide these citizens the help they need to remain independent.
Tennessee law protects volunteer drivers who are volunteering with a government agency, but not through a charitable organization or human service agency. Senate Bill 117 extends volunteer driver protection to any person volunteering through a charitable organization or human service agency as long as the volunteer driver does not commit gross negligence or willful and wanton misconduct and the sponsoring organization maintains liability insurance with limits at least equal to the limits set forth in the Governmental Tort Liability Act.
“Transportation services for the elderly remain a growing need in Tennessee,” said Senator Yager. “Our human service agencies and charitable organizations do a wonderful job in filling this need, but the threat of a lawsuit can hamper volunteerism. The PROVIDE Act would encourage more people to become volunteer drivers for the elderly because of the liability protection it offers.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 14 percent of Tennesseans are 65 years of age or older, and the national average is 13.7 percent. Tennessee’s number is expected to grow to more than 22 percent by 2020.
The companion bill, which was recommended by the Governor’s Task Force on Aging, is pending action in the Finance Committee in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

This is my second audit so far. First for post offices. There was an issue with my phone and it was recording only up to 10 minutes so the videos were divided into 10 minute intervals with a few seconds break in between to start recording again. Also I cut out some waiting time for the police because it took a little while. This post office had no Poster 7 on the walls. The public servant here will be seeing me again when I serve her a copy of it soon. I'd say the officers did a fair job handling this situation. Actually they seemed pretty quiet about it all. They must be learning. Any comments or criticism will be appreciated and I should've went back inside just to assert my rights and correctness to the worker but I found it best to let it be and wait until next time.

John Ross (Cherokee chief)
John Ross, also known as Guwisguwi, was the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828–1866, serving longer in this position than any other person. Described as the Moses of his people, Ross influenced the Indian nation through such tumultuous events as the relocation to Indian Territory and the American Civil War.
John Ross was the son of a Cherokee mother and a Scottish father. His mother and maternal grandmother were of mixed Scots-Cherokee ancestry, since his maternal grandfather was another Scottish immigrant. As a result, young John grew up bilingual and bicultural, an experience that served him well when his parents decided to send him to schools that served other mixed race Cherokee. After graduation, he was appointed an Indian agent in 1811. During the War of 1812, he served as adjutant of a Cherokee regiment under the command of Andrew Jackson. After the Red Stick War ended, Ross demonstrated his business acumen by starting a tobacco farm in Tennessee. In 1816, he built a warehouse and trading post on the Tennessee River north of the mouth of Chattanooga Creek, and started a ferry service from the south side of the river - Cherokee Nation, to the north side - USA. His businesses served as the start of a community known as Ross's Landing on the Tennessee River. Concurrently, John Ross developed a keen interest in Cherokee politics, attracting the attention of the Cherokee elders, especially Principal Chiefs Pathkiller and Charles R. Hicks, who, along with Major Ridge, became his political mentors.

Liane Russell's Interview
Liane B. Russell is a renowned geneticist. Born in Vienna, Austria, she and her family managed to flee the country after its annexation by Nazi Germany. After moving to the United States, Russell became interested in biological research. In 1947, she and her husband, William L. Russell, moved to Oak Ridge. In this interview, Russell explains her experiments on the effects of radiation at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s “Mouse House,” including the discovery that the Y chromosome is sex-determining. She describes her work with the environmental movement and the efforts of Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning, which she co-founded. She also recalls winning the Enrico Fermi Award from the Department of Energy and a visit to communist East Germany in the 1980s.
