SEQUOIA PARK - Eureka, CA
No rain for a couple of days so Tomoko and I hiked the trails in our favorite park. It is in Eureka, California. It is in the middle of the city right next to a small zoo. It is 67 acres of old growth and second growth redwoods. Some trees are over 300 feet tall.

Sequoia Park Zoo is located in the seaport town of Eureka, California, along the Pacific northwest coast. Set amid a mature coastal redwoods forest, this little gem of a zoo is a much beloved part of Humboldt County and the Lost Coast California region.
While it may be small in size (about 7 acres), the Sequoia Park Zoo is big on physical beauty, animal care, conservation activities and education. Founded in 1907, the zoo is the oldest in California and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
While at Sequoia Park Zoo, stroll through the beautifully maintained grounds and discover over 250 animals representing 75 species in a variety of exhibits. Some of the animals you'll find include: Chilean flamingos, crested screamers, Patagonian cavies, donkeys, a yak, cottontop tamarin, spider monkeys, gibbons, scarlet Ibis, Alpacas, red pandas, and an aviary with local and exotic birds. There's also a collection of barnyard animals and a petting corral.
The Sequoia Park Zoo is mostly level and easily maneuverable for families using strollers or the handicapped. Benches abound for quick breaks during your zoo tour.
Secrets of the Forest is an indoor, interactive exhibit that displays the forest habitats of some of our native species. It also shows the delicate balance between man's activities and the impact on Humboldt County's animal life, streams, rivers and bay.
A visit to the Sequoia Park Zoo is the perfect half-day excursion. I suggest you start off your visit in the morning when the animals are most active and have lunch at the zoo cafe where you'll find menu options including beef and garden burgers, chili, garlic fries, wraps, sandwiches, salads, desserts, plus an espresso bar. Eat in the indoor dining area or go outside to the picnic tables where you can take in the sights and sounds (those crested screamers really DO scream!) while enjoying your meal.
Then cap off your visit by exploring the adjacent redwood forest and park, which includes a duck pond, playground equipment for the kids and 60 acres of towering coastal redwoods with easily accessible paths suitable for most ages and activity levels.

Video Tips and How I Created this Video:
I filmed this video concentrating on short shots. I spent about 2 hours at the Sequoia Park Zoo on a sunny morning in April 2013. Using my Canon VIXIA HFR300, I filmed 125 short shots ranging anywhere from 10 seconds to 90 seconds of footage each. Once home, I took those 125 short shots and selected the 64 shots I liked the best.
I edited these using Cyberlink Power Director 10 editing software on my Toshiba Satellite L775 laptop. I ended up with 64 clips ranging in length from the shortest segment of 2 seconds to the longest segment of 22 seconds.
The power of a short shot video is that it gives your video momentum and is effective in telling your video's story without boring your audience. People are used to (and expect) videos with short clips even if they don't realize that's what they're viewing. Count the number of shots the next time you watch commercials and you'll be amazed at how many the pros can fit into your average 30-second spot.

Ravens at Sequoia Park Zoo, Eureka CA
These are the ravens at the zoo. As you can see, they have broken wings. This is why the zoo has them, so they can have a chance at living instead of just be put back out into the wild and be killed. I assume they came from the local area, since I know we do have some ravens here (I still can't figure out how you tell the difference between a crow and a raven when you see them at a distance, especially if they're quiet). I don't think these guys appreciated being stared at by people all day though =/ They were beautiful birds, and I appreciate having the opportunity to see them up close like that though.
